@ 1:03 he enters his solo with a major 3rd! (sorry non musicians) right after we heard the minor and right before lowering it. I know it sounds technical, but it´s done so beautifully, and in a context where it means intelligence, a superior sensitivity, and incredible balanced. A great music lesson in a fraction of a second.
The reason for all the confusion is that the generous uploader, BigChiefDeSota, replicated an error JazzWest made in listing TASTE-OF-HONEY in PgmII/6-1-63 of the 3-Episode “Jazz Casual” series, when it is actually part of PgmIII/2-15-64. That changes quite a bit, personnelwise!
One of the side and very interesting stories of this Woody Chart. They were in the studio for a 2 day recording session when they heard that Kennedy was shot. One of those "where were you" moments of our generation. They took a break to try and decide if they would continue, did so and recorded "A Taste of Honey" It gave a whole new meaning to this minor key tune. I hear it now and it makes me very sad. Knowing this changes how you listen to it.
@1kellisman The CD was released by Koch Jazz a few years ago, but it's still available for purchase on many sites such as worldsrecords or cdconnection
@ Deecarter35 this tune " Taste of Honey" has brought me Beautiful ! Memories from my childhood, I over 40" now. I remember this as One of my Favorite Jazz Tune,as a child by Herb Alpert. It Final good for me to get the History of this - Really Important for personal reason. Thank you and Bobby Scott. God Bless All Great ! Artist. Much Thanks. Good Night. Love, Teri
i can't believe that I have two of Billy Hunt's personal trumpets in my house right now.. He's friends with my jazz band director and he sent them to me to buy.. They are amazing!!
This tune, "Taste Of Honey" was written by the husband of my best friend. His name was Bobby Scott. He wrote it for the Movie. He died many years ago in the '60's I believe.
This is a really nice arrangement. I bet he would have liked it too.
Nope - he lived well into the '80s at least, and continued to make great contributions at the highest level (one of my favorites is a Sarah Vaughan orchestral concert in Germany in 1984).
Man this was a superb band. Listen to the space the piano player leaves with his comping behind the sax solo, absolutely perfect and sympathetic to the music. Everyone is swinging beautifully, the bass player is digging in so well. Absolutely fantastic, thanks so much for posting
This arrangement was a track on Woody Herman 1964. All 5 albums recorded on the Philips label during the mid-60's have been issued as a boxed cd set - Mosaic Select Woody Herman MS-031. I've just ordered a set through Amazon.
Bill Chase wrote this arrangement for his lady friend Erin Adair (also wrote the lyrics for Bill on the ENNEA suite & Invitation To A River suite for the Chase group)
Just a comment on the Trumpet section. I'm not sure which trumpet player listed is the one not actually in this section but. Danny Nolan is and is not listed. I do know that Bill Chase is in the center and to our left of him, (the short guy with glasses) is Danny Nolan. I know this because he was my trumpet teacher after he got off this band. He passed away back in the mid to late 80's. I just want him to be reconized.
Correction on the Sax Section personnel: That's Carmen Leggio on tenor (solo) not Bobby Jones. And I believe that's Tom Anastas on bari; not Frank Hittner
I had the good fortune of seeing this band when it toured the UK in 1964. Quite simply the most swinging big band ever. With Jake Hanna, Phil Wilson, Sal Nistico and the wonderful and the much missed Bill Chase leading the trumpet section this band had it all. Bill Chase, of course, wrote this arrangement. Many thanks for posting this video. It has brought back great memories of a great band.
The expression "of course",in this context, means "naturally". If you have not studied the music of the great man then you would not be supposed to know that he wrote the arrangement. He actually wrote a number of charts for this herd, including "23 Red", which he solos on majestically.

I agree . The solo was a masterpiece. You could tell that Woody didn't care much for the low note, but it went off great.

I’m convinced that the correct lineup for this 3-15-1964 video of Woody’s TASTE OF HONEY is:
Tpts(L-R): Billy Hunt, Danny Nolan, Bill Chase, Gerry Lamy, Paul Fontaine
Bones(L-R): Kenny Wenzel, Phil Wilson, Henry Southall
Saxes(L-R): Tom Anastas(b), Jackie Stevens, Carmen Leggio, Sal Nistico
P: Nat Pierce, D: Jake Hanna, B: Chuck Andrus

Worth reading, if you can possibly find a copy, is the wonderful book by Steve Voce, 'Woody Herman' published in the UK by Apollo Press, 1986.
