  • @ 1:03 he enters his solo with a major 3rd! (sorry non musicians) right after we heard the minor and right before lowering it. I know it sounds technical, but it´s done so beautifully, and in a context where it means intelligence, a superior sensitivity, and incredible balanced. A great music lesson in a fraction of a second.

  • @z9a11

I agree . The solo was a masterpiece. You could tell that Woody didn't care much for the low note, but it went off great.

  • Much better than the original! Awesome!

  • I’ve found there are 2 exact same postings of TASTE OF HONEY (“Jazz Casual” 2-15-64) on YouTube:

    Taste of Honey 1964: YouTube# EMDsk2nojd0 – by BigChiefDeSota 5-3-09

    Taste of Honey 1964: YouTube# h7JyOfvwIZE - by sdartist1 3-28-10

  • Darn it - tried to get everything right! @@#$@#$

    My 4th prev. post said PgmIII/3-15-1964 - s/b PgmIII/2-15-1964.

    - - - - -

NET’s “Jazz Casual Series 1963-64” – prod. By Ralph Gleason (B&W)…

    Woody: 3 Episodes (I/Summer’63, II/6-1-1963, III/2-15-1964)

  • NET’s “Jazz Casual Series 1963-64” – prod. By Ralph Gleason (B&W)…

    Woody: 3 Episodes (I/Summer’63, II/6-1-1963, III/2-15-1964)

    jazzwestdvd com / casual_woody_herman.htm

Again, Youtube won't let me enter the full links.

  • BTW, If you compare these 2 YouTubes. . .

. . .they ARE THE EXACT SAME BAND & SESSION

    (ie, Pgm3/2-15-64, diff. than Pgm2 Summer1963):

    After You’ve Gone: youtube MXiBu4gBc98

    Taste of Honey: youtube EMDsk2nojd0

For some reason Youtube won’t let me put in the full links.

  • The reason for all the confusion is that the generous uploader, BigChiefDeSota, replicated an error JazzWest made in listing TASTE-OF-HONEY in PgmII/6-1-63 of the 3-Episode “Jazz Casual” series, when it is actually part of PgmIII/2-15-64. That changes quite a bit, personnelwise!

  • I’m convinced that the correct lineup for this 3-15-1964 video of Woody’s TASTE OF HONEY is:

Tpts(L-R): Billy Hunt, Danny Nolan, Bill Chase, Gerry Lamy, Paul Fontaine

Bones(L-R): Kenny Wenzel, Phil Wilson, Henry Southall

Saxes(L-R): Tom Anastas(b), Jackie Stevens, Carmen Leggio, Sal Nistico

P: Nat Pierce, D: Jake Hanna, B: Chuck Andrus

  • so swinging and great

  • One of the side and very interesting stories of this Woody Chart. They were in the studio for a 2 day recording session when they heard that Kennedy was shot. One of those "where were you" moments of our generation. They took a break to try and decide if they would continue, did so and recorded "A Taste of Honey" It gave a whole new meaning to this minor key tune. I hear it now and it makes me very sad. Knowing this changes how you listen to it.

  • The Great Woody Herman !

  • This is the very definition of "cool."

  • Oh what a band ! ! So tight! Hard to find talent like this today. So very mellow, cool & gritty all at the same time. Thanks for sharing.

  • Why is the Chase solo down a step from original key. It's only those measures.

  • Amazing! Really tight playing. My first time hearing this tune. Thanks for posting!

  • I dolie this but here are plenty of bands who don't have faggots in them. Why not post ome of them?

  • Simply awesome. Thanks for posting.

  • Still it's great stuff despite him.

  • I love this stuff. It's such a shame Paul Fontaine was a faggot.

  • Great Jazz Groove, This arrangement and performance by this great Band calls you back time and again for the experience.

  • Great Music by great musicians, would love to hvae this onCD or MP3 can anyone help? This is music not rap and crap this takes talent and discipline

  • @1kellisman The CD was released by Koch Jazz a few years ago, but it's still available for purchase on many sites such as worldsrecords or cdconnection

  • GOD! I LOVE THIS. FLAWLESS. SIMPLY FLAWLESS.

  • I can't stop watching this....

  • @slakash I can't stop watching this either. It's hypnotic.

  • Chuck Andrus gets an absolutely huge sound with no amp.

  • @ Deecarter35 this tune " Taste of Honey" has brought me Beautiful ! Memories from my childhood, I over 40" now. I remember this as One of my Favorite Jazz Tune,as a child by Herb Alpert. It Final good for me to get the History of this - Really Important for personal reason. Thank you and Bobby Scott. God Bless All Great ! Artist. Much Thanks. Good Night. Love, Teri
  • who originally played taste of honey? Because I thought it was herb albert .

Great vid . thumbs up !

  • i can't believe that I have two of Billy Hunt's personal trumpets in my house right now.. He's friends with my jazz band director and he sent them to me to buy.. They are amazing!!

  • Thank you, I checked Wikipedia and they said he died 1990. I didn't know he was so active in Music and Movies...thats wonderful. Thank you so much!

    dee

  • This tune, "Taste Of Honey" was written by the husband of my best friend. His name was Bobby Scott. He wrote it for the Movie. He died many years ago in the '60's I believe.

This is a really nice arrangement. I bet he would have liked it too.

  • @deecarter35

Nope - he lived well into the '80s at least, and continued to make great contributions at the highest level (one of my favorites is a Sarah Vaughan orchestral concert in Germany in 1984).

  • I believe the Bass player on this is my old friend Chuck Andrus. God, how I miss him. He passed abt 12 yrs ago. Great Band!!!

  • Also shivers at the trumpet solo lead, that is powerful music

  • Man this was a superb band. Listen to the space the piano player leaves with his comping behind the sax solo, absolutely perfect and sympathetic to the music. Everyone is swinging beautifully, the bass player is digging in so well. Absolutely fantastic, thanks so much for posting

  • Fantastic!

    Thank you for posting this!!!

Do you know if this version is on any Woody Herman CDs?

  • This arrangement was a track on Woody Herman 1964. All 5 albums recorded on the Philips label during the mid-60's have been issued as a boxed cd set - Mosaic Select Woody Herman MS-031. I've just ordered a set through Amazon.

  • Jack Stevens was my college roommate, and i regretfully must say he has passed on, and will be missed.........

  • Bill Chase wrote this arrangement for his lady friend Erin Adair (also wrote the lyrics for Bill on the ENNEA suite & Invitation To A River suite for the Chase group)

  • jake hanna drums.....ken wenzel, trombone

  • Just a comment on the Trumpet section. I'm not sure which trumpet player listed is the one not actually in this section but. Danny Nolan is and is not listed. I do know that Bill Chase is in the center and to our left of him, (the short guy with glasses) is Danny Nolan. I know this because he was my trumpet teacher after he got off this band. He passed away back in the mid to late 80's. I just want him to be reconized.

    Thank You

  • @trumpet1957 Dan should be reconized. He was always the man in the background. He was my trumpet teacher back in the early 70"s.

  • Correction on the Sax Section personnel: That's Carmen Leggio on tenor (solo) not Bobby Jones. And I believe that's Tom Anastas on bari; not Frank Hittner

    Sal Nistico

    Carmen Leggio

    Jackie Stevens

    Tom Anastas

  • An even better read:

Woody Herman : Chronicles Of The Herds

    Clancy, William D.

New York : Schirmer Books ; London : Prentice Hall International, c1995.

Available from Amazon or your nearest library

  • Worth reading, if you can possibly find a copy, is the wonderful book by Steve Voce, 'Woody Herman' published in the UK by Apollo Press, 1986.

  • Just look at how Jake Hanna is "feeling" the music.

  • just to note...trombone 2 is Kenny Wenzel.

  • Luv it :)

I listen to this song so much!

    It makes me happy :)

  • there is nothing better than dynamic music played by talented musicians doing their best

  • I had the good fortune of seeing this band when it toured the UK in 1964. Quite simply the most swinging big band ever. With Jake Hanna, Phil Wilson, Sal Nistico and the wonderful and the much missed Bill Chase leading the trumpet section this band had it all. Bill Chase, of course, wrote this arrangement. Many thanks for posting this video. It has brought back great memories of a great band.

  • You say that Chase "of course" wrote the arrangement. How is that an "of course"? Were we supposed to know that?

  • The expression "of course",in this context, means "naturally". If you have not studied the music of the great man then you would not be supposed to know that he wrote the arrangement. He actually wrote a number of charts for this herd, including "23 Red", which he solos on majestically.

  • Yes

  • Great Music,

it actually takes talent to play like this.

  • This is a rare find. Thanks for posting.
