@Travelerme1 Measure it with imperial gallons instead of US gallons? It's like another 0.8L per gallon then which means more miles since it's more fuel.
Wow top gear has improved a lot over the years haha!
Did anyone else notice when the buzzer sounds at 4:43 the tachometer only shows 5000rpm, which means they didn't match the sounds to the image. Also, this dude is such a boring stiff compared to the modern top gear team. Clarksons top gear is awesome!
@equinekiller32 The buzzer isn't really annoying at all, he just over revs it. I own a mazda rx7 and mine reaches peak power 500rpm before the buzzer comes in, in other words, the buzzer is there to let you know you made a mistake. You won't gain anything by over revving it. Also, the buzzer is hooked up to a separate little speaker, so if you remove the speaker, no more buzzer!
ive driven my 84 944 n/a, and my friends 88 fc rx7 gxl...i prefer the 944, stiffer suspension, roomier inside/laid out better, and more get up and go...just compareing those two.
Like them both but rotary is my passion and well i love the rx7 better btw yea i agree that guy was short shifting and needs two people one who knows rx7s and one who knows the porshe then we would see who really wins!!:D
The redline buzzer is annoying but I have had it go off without me knowing that I was near the redline, so it does serve its purpose well. I agree that they could have made the buzzer sound better...
I had THAT rx-7 in white as my first car! not many had the little black rubber wing, loved the torque but it was a rev high;gear low monster and at 80mph she was howling! Mpg sucked and changing the sparkplugs was like preforming surgery. oil top off every weekend. burnt 1/8 off the dippstick between fridays The wiper switch was the greatest ever designed, sold my mazda and bought a '83 944, liked the porsche better but I've heard the turbo on the rx-7 made it the beast it should have been.
RX-7 for me, no doubt about it. The Porsche IS a good car, but when you look at the history of Porsche and the history of Mazda then, now, and everytime in between you know that the Mazda is something special and the 924 has been long replaced with the Boxster, but, nothing about that generation of Porsche was particularly special or clever. The RX line always had to be special and clever. The FMR layout, the wankel rotary(bonus for turbo), the suspension, etc. RX-7 all the way.
The buzzer might be annoying but it's useful. In my FD RX-7 it would be far too easy to over-rev it without the buzzer. The rotary is such a smooth and quiet (stock exhaust) powerplant that you don't realise how high you are revving it.
@TheDeathpill Buzzer doesn't tell you when to shift. its a Over Rev Buzzer. Due to the Balancing of the engine it was dangerous around 7800 RPM - 8600 RPM. The Buzzer was to alert the Driver to help lower Rotor to Housing Contact. Smart i think
@dvtc8u actually it is more comparable to 2354 cc's since it has 3 faces on the rotor that are being used at once. the 1.3 liter statement is very misleading and not accurate.
@monono954 Yes you can. There is a certain amount of area that is being used for combustion. While they are not the exact same, dimensions are available which is what is used.
@gtiiiiiiii what your comparing is every combustion on a 4 stroke to every combustion on a rotary engine. there are three explosions per rotation. on a 4 stroke there is only 1 explosion every 4 strokes, so what your saying is that a 2 stroke engine rated at 49cc's is actually displacing 196 cc's compared to a 4 stroke. they can't be compared at least not without speculation.
Compared to a 4 stroke yes a 2 stroke would have more combustion events per crank rotation. The only way to compare apples to oranges is find the common denominator. I never said it was exact, but it puts it into perspective that a rotary is also not a 1.3 liter as the 1.3 liter rating only takes into account one face of the rotor as if it were a 4 stroke engine, which it is not.
@gtiiiiiiii what Is being measured is how much air is displaced in one explosion rather than in a compete rotation. Now, if you were to measure how much it were per rotation then it would be in fact 1800cc's per rotor but that is isn't that case, at one given period the engine will only displace 600cc's not more. displacing more air in less time, but in subtotal it is not equivalent to 1800. now if the rotor faces were combined in one then yes it would be 1800cc's but at once it is 1300cc's
why can they use a top of the line porsche and a basic RX-7? i dont get it. and the points he makes are dumb, "i cant see the oil pressure" thats because thats not a stock rx7 steering wheel.
top of the line or not, they both are putting down about the same numbers, they weigh about the same, and they were at the time the most opposite rivals, a famous german sportscar, and a japanese rotary, that's why
@TheFastFlo - I chose the 924S and sold it a couple years later because I got tired of getting revved at by every thunderbrick in a souped-up Civic. And I got tired of knowing that if I took them up on their offer, half the time I'd lose. Thing handled like nobody's business though.
that was the weirdest FC i have ever seen...and i own one! what the hell was that? a 85.5 model? im damn positive my 87 has coil packs and not a distributer....just weird
Mazda released an early model of the FC in japan in 85. Im pretty sure that is what he is driving. i had an 86 FC, first official year of the FC, and it had two coil packs. if you also notice the steering wheel is very spartan not really something you would see on a mass production car.
for toyota mazda doesnt use that, AND..anybody that owns a 7 doesnt calls it a mark 2 its either 2nd gen or FC...like i said...its a toyota and euro thing
were do you live? in england? ive spoken with people who own rx7's there too and ive never heard any of them call it that...and japan definetly doesnt call it that...and nobody on the forums call it that
That probably means your low-coolant and low-oil pressure buzzer is disabled too (they are one and the same) so you should get that hooked back up asap
I think the main problem with the RX-7 is that people (as truenofan said) don't take care of them, but that is probably because they think it's just another Japanese car like a Honda (no one takes THAT much care of a Honda) but a Porsche... people respect these cars, because for 1- they're German made (so they're built very well) and 2- they cost more and are worth more down the road. I own an 87' 924S and a 85' 944 and both are running very well :) *excuse me for being somewhat bias. :D
when people dont check the oil, check fluids, and only think its just like any other car the engine doesnt last as long. thats why you dont see any rx-7's really anymore.
I test drove a Porsche 944 before I bought my FC. The RX-7 drives much better, imo. Granted my RX-7 has been babied its entire life and is in fantastic shape.
In this country its measured as a 2.4 something to do with in japan the cc is measured by 1 rotor and this country they measure it by both rotors together or something like that.
no thats wrong.. The twin rotor in RX7 FC is called a '13b' or '13bT' (if it's a turbo model).. Meaning 1.3 litre displacement for the whole engine you twit.
1:41 check out the dizzy got a bit better spark and all the goodies that come w/ it .more mpg and hp from the coil packs that came equipped on this body style rx7
Beutiful...i love the rotary engine...i want one but i want the 1991 gt-x in black or red =D and...when i hace the money and time..mount an 20b twin turbo engine =D
Mazda WAS the first company to mass produce the wankle rotary piston less engine in a car. Google it or wiki it, its true. if you look at the mazda rx7, it does resemble it, but its still a different look and its lower in general and CG. and if they went with the turbo version of the porsche, they should go with the turbo version of the rx7 as well.
Good job Mazda copying 924 at 100%. "Mazda developed the Wankel Engine". Yeh right, tell that to Germans. Felix Wankel was not Japanese. Nor 924 was 100% Porsche, but it's still great German car even today.
13b would be rated as a 1300cc in racing unless they are in a class of there own then they would go by n/a or forcd induction.... correct me if im wrong
Well, I hear different things from different people, but most of the rotards I talk to say a rotary gets about double the HP to displacement ratio of the same grade of boinger. Hence why a 1.3L in the RX-8's is putting out 250bhp bone stock.
because they were trying to make it seem even since its british, and its "unfair" to judge a turbo against a nonturbo and if you notice they never realy take sides on these things.
It's good to see that cars and Top Gear have come on so much since those days! The delivery style of the presenters is so staid and boring, I love the bit where he over-revs the RX7 causing the car to beep in warning, to which he replies "Thank-you"! Funny stuff! Almost as funny as the line "They're both 130mph sports cars", hahaha!
do YOU get the Fact... that the 1987 924S WAS a 944, except for the narrower-924 body? Yep, motor, suspension, everything. The 924S was Faster than the 944 that year because of the better aerodynamics.
its 1.308 cc dammit..its not a piston engine

that warning buzzer of the rx7 alarms at 5k the red is at 7. i would take it to the limiter if it has one.

I shift usually at 6k nowadays in mine, and no there's no limiter in it. :D

Truenofan 4 years ago
Good job Mazda copying 924 at 100%. "Mazda developed the Wankel Engine". Yeh right, tell that to Germans. Felix Wankel was not Japanese. Nor 924 was 100% Porsche, but it's still great German car even today.
azzaQ 4 years ago
why do they say the mazda is 2354cc? its only 1300cc
rotanggl 4 years ago
The displacement of a rotary is misleading, the car would probably be rated as a 2.6L in competition, as it's a completely different type of engine.
More to the question is why they didn't test a T2 FB.
TemplarOnHigh 4 years ago
Er, FC, I mean.
TemplarOnHigh 4 years ago
Heh, probably because the porsche wouldn't keep up at all with the Tll.

13b would be rated as a 1300cc in racing unless they are in a class of there own then they would go by n/a or forcd induction.... correct me if im wrong
rotanggl 4 years ago
Well, I hear different things from different people, but most of the rotards I talk to say a rotary gets about double the HP to displacement ratio of the same grade of boinger. Hence why a 1.3L in the RX-8's is putting out 250bhp bone stock.
TemplarOnHigh 4 years ago
because they were trying to make it seem even since its british, and its "unfair" to judge a turbo against a nonturbo and if you notice they never realy take sides on these things.
with the TII you would have to take sides

It's good to see that cars and Top Gear have come on so much since those days! The delivery style of the presenters is so staid and boring, I love the bit where he over-revs the RX7 causing the car to beep in warning, to which he replies "Thank-you"! Funny stuff! Almost as funny as the line "They're both 130mph sports cars", hahaha!

yeas, just dont try an autocross style left hander with less than 1/4 tank of gas... ping... DONE!
InsipidTomatoes 4 years ago
The $5k difference you'll make up in gas expense the first year. Both cars would be smoked by a Ford SHO 1989 (0-60 6.6sec).
daedalx 4 years ago
do YOU get the Fact... that the 1987 924S WAS a 944, except for the narrower-924 body? Yep, motor, suspension, everything. The 924S was Faster than the 944 that year because of the better aerodynamics.
