So hey man, I hate new music. I found out about you guys last week and I can honestly say this is the best new music i've heard in forever. It probably won't happen but i'm going to try to play a show with you guys sometime. Again, you guys are sick as fuck.
yo man just out of curiosity, how do you see the band and your vocals maturing in the future? are you guys going to take the more death metal/deathcore route? and do you think you'll be going for a more diaphragm controlled guttural based technique for your screams? not trying to knock what you do, you guys are pretty brutal, im just curious because you guys obviously have the potential for something great.
@icemanbto definately not. actually quite the opposite vocally. i've added high screams into the mix, as well as clean vocals. so i have a whole bunch of things going on. musically it's hard to say. we'll still have very fast agressive songs like Ahzrukhal, but we'll also have some nu-metal bouncy hard shit. we're adding more into the mix so we don't get pigeonholed as a "deathcore" band. and i'm going to make whatever kind of music my heart desires.
@xWarSaw32x there is no "right" way to scream and anyone who tells you otherwise is an idiot. there are ways taught to prevent damage by people like melissa cross, and those sound like shit and are for pussies. most "screamers" in successful bands were never taught and have lost their voices many a time.
So if you have to record vocals like this, one sentence or so at a time, how do you even perform it live without destroying your throat or running out of breath?

Ive been wanting to start a band and ive been doing vocals for a while now and my main influences are Chelsea Grin, Suicide Silence and Defiler...Im 16 and ever since i heard wait and bleed from slipknot, ive been into vocals so I thought it would be a pretty good idea if i can get some advice from the front man of Defiler himself?
@stronger2013 hey man. funny thats the same song that got me wanting to do this, slipknots forever my favorite. honestly the only advice i can give is don't be afraid to tear up your vocal chords and scream really fucking loud, that's how i do it. yeah it hurts but i like the sound i have.

@DeJay323 It has to do with the neck and lungs, has nothing to do with the body. In fact, smaller people usually have an easier time using their diaphram. I just listened to the Subway thing he uploaded and it was pretty good but I think most of his music is cheesy and overly angsty, as well as pretty dull. Honestly one of the best vocalists I've seen, I think he just needs to find a unique sound rather than being a carbon copy of the past 10 years of Deathcore.

I think your vocals suit your music perfectly, but I think as far as composition it's a little too run of the mil. I WAS being a little too irrational on the past 10 years of Deathcore comment. What I meant is I don't feel you're doing anything particularly innovative for Deathcore, and that the only thing that stands out are the vocals. I do think Defiler should be bigger than any other DxC band
@Beenyad cont: but I really hope the next album takes a new direction musically, because i'm not hearing too much diversity in the music. I really hope you listen to what I'm saying because I can kinda see what you're wanting to do with Defiler but what I'm hearing just sounds too familiar.
@WoRceRaKs Deathcore is Death Metal + Hardcore Punk with a simple approach, and honestly that's what I'm hearing. In case you didn't know, not all Deathcore bands suck. Have you heard of The Red Chord? Genres shouldn't even matter. Out of curiosity, what do you listen to?
@Beenyad heard of them, dig them. i listen to everything literally. my favorite bands are slipknot, emmure, staind, chevelle, j dilla. band that got me into music was papa roach. my favorite hip hop artist is immortal technique. i'm not narcissistic, but i have a pretty good understanding of the shit that i listen to, and i would call The Acacia Strain deathcore. i wouldnt call us that, because we have much more melody, we don't overuse trichords or dissonants, etc.
@WoRceRaKs I'd definitely say there are traces of Deathcore. It's almost Melodeath but I can definitely hear some traces of Hardcore Punk, and it's a little more simple than MD. I see what you mean though. I'm getting the Deathcore thing from "Cryomancer" as it has a really straightforward, midtempo, almost 2-step approach. Either way I dig the Subway thing. Not something I would listen to, but it's pretty good. Very atmospheric.
@Beenyad i agree with cryomancer, it's our heaviest and most popular song. but you can probably tell that i hate labels. i don't even like hardcore as a label. but thank you for the subway, we're messing around with a lot more lead parts that are very spatial and slow like that.
@WoRceRaKs Yeah labels are record companies ways of telling you who to listen to. It's complete bullshit. Only time I ever use labels is to describe a band's sound-and that's all it should be for, at least with subgenres. I look forward to more Subway-esque stuff. Ive been wanting to start a band and ive been doing vocals for a while now and my main influences are Chelsea Grin, Suicide Silence and Defiler...Im 16 and ever since i heard wait and bleed from slipknot, ive been into vocals so I thought it would be a pretty good idea if i can get some advice from the front man of Defiler himself?

@stronger2013 hey man. funny thats the same song that got me wanting to do this, slipknots forever my favorite. honestly the only advice i can give is don't be afraid to tear up your vocal chords and scream really fucking loud, that's how i do it. yeah it hurts but i like the sound i have.

@DeJay323 It has to do with the neck and lungs, has nothing to do with the body. In fact, smaller people usually have an easier time using their diaphram. I just listened to the Subway thing he uploaded and it was pretty good but I think most of his music is cheesy and overly angsty, as well as pretty dull. Honestly one of the best vocalists I've seen, I think he just needs to find a unique sound rather than being a carbon copy of the past 10 years of Deathcore.

@Beenyad hhhhmmmmmmm. well then kind sir, since i write about 60% of our music, what sort of band do you think my vocals would suit? btw we arent fucking deathcore. we have clean vocals, an acoustic track, and our shit isnt constant chug on frets 1-4. until our new album is released, hold your opinion. pangaea is a collection of the first songs i ever wrote, and i'm only giving you the satisfaction of a reply because this is the first negative comment on this video. good day.

@WoRceRaKs Okay well honestly thank you for hearing me out. I'll give you guys some time to develop. I think your vocals suit your music perfectly, but I think as far as composition it's a little too run of the mil. I WAS being a little too irrational on the past 10 years of Deathcore comment. What I meant is I don't feel you're doing anything particularly innovative for Deathcore, and that the only thing that stands out are the vocals. I do think Defiler should be bigger than any other DxC band

@WoRceRaKs Deathcore is Death Metal + Hardcore Punk with a simple approach, and honestly that's what I'm hearing. In case you didn't know, not all Deathcore bands suck. Have you heard of The Red Chord? Genres shouldn't even matter. Out of curiosity, what do you listen to?

@Beenyad heard of them, dig them. i listen to everything literally. my favorite bands are slipknot, emmure, staind, chevelle, j dilla. band that got me into music was papa roach. my favorite hip hop artist is immortal technique. i'm not narcissistic, but i have a pretty good understanding of the shit that i listen to, and i would call The Acacia Strain deathcore. i wouldnt call us that, because we have much more melody, we don't overuse trichords or dissonants, etc.

@WoRceRaKs I'd definitely say there are traces of Deathcore. It's almost Melodeath but I can definitely hear some traces of Hardcore Punk, and it's a little more simple than MD. I see what you mean though. I'm getting the Deathcore thing from "Cryomancer" as it has a really straightforward, midtempo, almost 2-step approach. Either way I dig the Subway thing. Not something I would listen to, but it's pretty good. Very atmospheric.

@Beenyad i agree with cryomancer, it's our heaviest and most popular song. but you can probably tell that i hate labels. i don't even like hardcore as a label. but thank you for the subway, we're messing around with a lot more lead parts that are very spatial and slow like that.

Only time I ever use labels is to describe a band's sound-and that's all it should be for, at least with subgenres. I look forward to more Subway-esque stuff. Reminds me of a straightforward, more pissed off version of Isis. \m/
