@pectinmania I think if it really was a rip off then there would probably have been lawsuits by now... however I would believe it if this was an influence.
if that's the case then they both ripped off Shuma-Gorath. Green and cyclops can describe a lot of monsters and if they did "rip off" it'd be more obvious, like The Lion King/Kimba The White Lion
"Everybody in MonsterLand loves your show! We used to be afraid of it, until we understood it." That is the wisest, most meta comment I have ever seen on a television show.
no...it doesnt seem likely that pixar riped off pee wee.... i mean a one eyed monster is a very popular monster character design there r alot of coinsidences, (lol sry if i spelled it wrong) its up 2 u wat you think! :)
Not a rip-off! Mike from Monsters Inc. has two legs. This monster has one. Mike uses his whole mouth when he talks. This monster uses one side of his mouth. They both have one eye, but TV has done that for years and years. So no, Pixar did not rip off Pee Wee. Sorry, but no!
I don't thinks so, Mike Kazowski has 2 legs, his arms have hands, has horns, and his mouth is in it a different place. He was funnier too, different personalities altogether.
Nah, there were naked pictures of children in his house. He said he bought a collection of old pictures in bulk and didn't excise any risque ones. But a better defence would have been the above.
Pixar did steal the idea. It was on a subconscious level, the mind tends to forget where these original ideas came from. But once your idea is copyrighted, it shouldn't be stolen but seems to be happening all the time now. Pixar should admit to this mistake, or theft!
A green Cyclopes? I'm sure that idea has been around for centuries before Pee Wee or Pixar existed. Pee Wee's was more original with the sideways mouth, but this is hardly a ripoff.
Hardly say it was a rip off just because one of the characters looks similar. Story wise, Monsters Inc is - as far as i'm aware - completely original. The guys at Pixar may have just seen this and thought 'Yeah that's an interesting design, lets build on it.'
It wouldn't be surprising. Plenty of animators study older films/shows for inspiration, and it would be easy enough to take an idea of a monster shaped like that (from PeeWee) and make slight changes.
So...ripoff? Possibly. We need to demand answers from the character designers! :P
@Napalilli yes faggot, that's exactly what i was saying. you got me there. i was hoping you wouldn't be able to infer my animosity toward women, you know, because of how sexist i am, but you did it anyway. kudos, jackass.

But no I think they didn't. There has always been things called cyclops and just because they are both green doesn't mean anything lol. People are always going to try and hate on the high top great companies.
I'm sure the pixar people watch Pee-Wee's playhouse all the time. Pee-wee was a staple for kids in the 80's I watched that show every Saturday morning! :)
For the record, Pee-wee's Playhouse had a lot of animation, and there's a chance a few artists who worked on that animation would later work for Pixar. In fact, John Lassetter, who has been leading Pixar for quite some time, was in the same Cal Arts class as Tim Burton, who directed Pee-wee's Big Adventure.
