I am Bangalee, don't know anything about Tamil. I saw the movie 16 Vayathinile, saw at least 10 times. Loved this song so much... Ilaya Raja is a great musician.
I ll always listen to this song from the dialogue.. ' Mayil irukra azhahukkum anthasthukkum evanavathu seemailernthu soottu coatu potavan than varuvan ' ... the bgm creates a breeze over us... can listen to such songs infinite times.. Raja Rajathan.... :)
All time favourite...I grew up listening to his songs... I love the music of this song..
Im not good in music..but i guess the guitar...wow.. lovely..
when i was young, whenever i listen to this song i will get some kind of feeling which i cant explain..till now. I dont know. But its sweet..better than honey...
In the present, when we forget songs from composers even before their next album gets released, Ilayaraja's music is the only one that remains 16 vayathinile. His music not only transcends age groups, but also ages. Now, seeing some comments here, Raja has also brought Indian states, in as far corners as TN, Punjab and Bengal together, into one truely unified country. Long live Ilayaraja, and his music.
paul1900ca... I am from bengal. I wish Tamil Nadu shared its border with Bengal too. That man Illaiyaraja is a genius. I remember as a kid I would watch regional movies which came on Doordarshan in the afternoon only if had music by Illaiyaraja. Maaan...he is music himself. Just try out classics like Sagara Sangamam, Swathi Muthyam, Mouna Ragam, etc., etc.... actually the list is so big I can keep writing for ages. I still laugh, cry and romanticize with his songs and background score.
I always thought this had one of the most ingenious orchestration ever created (with no electronic music) - guitar chords - just delightful. As a mallu studying in a school in Coimbatore - this song made me a fan of tamil music - and even today, living in US, I listent to the latest tamil songs - have 100s of them on my iPod.
most beautiful composition..i was 14 when i watched this movie.. awesome acting by Kamal, Rajani, Sreedevi... one of the best Tamil movie in those days...
@crannage2009 I WISH Tamilnadu shared the border with punjab State just a crazy thought came to my Mind. yes Mann is great and the greatness abut him is smost times he writes his own lyrics, highly umatchable talent. late Bindrakia was good old time singer, where he just lets his vocal chords create music
Like AD,BC...what Ilayaraja has given to this world is a milestone in human history itself. A simple humble man Ilayaraja you are. Thank you for what you have done to music. Warm hugs to you.
This is a masterpiece and Sridevi has done this role when she was hardly 14 years old!! How has she managed to pull out this God only knows. What expressions. Here is the tamil version of the clip.

Chakravarthi may be an Emperor, but Raaja is God. Even the movie is directed not by Bharatiraaja but by K Raghavendra Rao. Why on earth have they not done with the originals is a mystery. Thank Chakravarthi for not tampering this immortal melody. Thanks to Palani again.
