As years are passing by, artists try to give new meaning to their songs, just like Bono recently did in Pittsburgh by saying that they wrote 'BAD' about Andy Rowen (but that's also not true). I don't know why they do that though ...

The reference to El Salvador is about the Salvadoran Civil War, that started 1980 (ended 1992) and so was in the news at the time. The point is the song is inspired by, but not explicitly about, Bloody Sunday. It's not about the politics, it's about the people, the band's opinion that killing is not a valid means to resolve conflict.

But ultimately if you ask why someone was killed by a soldier during war, it's generally because his sergeant told him to, and the sergeant told him to because his captain told him to, and the captain told the sergeant because a general told him to, and a general told the captain to because a politician told him to. It just takes someone to say no somewhere in that chain for that death to not happen.
