It certainly looked like fun. Problem is no action matched word. It'd be a great production if it was written for the correct opera or play. But this was definitely not Sonnambula.
I have never booed in my life before. But Miss Zimmerman DESTROYED the opera with a lazy production, a bunch of nonsense; people laughs when the music told us of an other story, for instance when Miss Desayy write on a board " aria": . MAry Zimmerman is entitled to say that Sonnambula is ridiculous , so she had to refuse to stage it. But once she accepted the money, she had to find an idea in the libretto and by the way , there are. ...
Sorry to disappoint everybody but we were four of us watching it this Saturday and we found absolutely fantastic. Well, Zimmerman was not there but the curtain call toooooooooook a long time.
Well, there was some nonsenses, and it is definitely not the best thing she's done in all her career, but you totally overeact. She didn't destroyed the opera.
I can't stand people who talk about other people's work without any respect.
This is the worst new production ever! i hope they burn this after it's done! Mary Zimmerman did a pretty great job on the lucia, but this? this was horrible! It looks like it could have been put together in a week! SHAME ON ALL OF YOU AT THE MET! I'm scared for the Armida! dear lord! Someone tell mary not to do anything stupid or the met will be in some some deep deep poo poo. Renee Fleming, please we are all begging you, do you best bel canto!
So stupid director trying to Diva-please (AND secure her next gig) does the soprano's bidding and gets roundly booed off! A show within a show is SO dated a concept and lazy - in this instance badly thought through and the "concept" has more holes than a seive! Dessay and Zimmerman, hang your heads in shame!!!!!! Mr Gelb, you too!
A deserved booing to a producer who made a real MESS! Reason why the soprano didnt like the audience booing (and tried to stop them!?) GUILT, it was the soprano who basically said, if this is set in a traditional Tyrolean Village count me out.
You are correct, the audience came to see Miss Dessay, they DID NOT come to see a work destroyed by an "idee" from either Dessay or Zimmerman! Happy note is that the audience are getting greta value for their dollars from the cast! Bravi Tutti!
I think that Juan Diego did a great job too! It's funny, if you watch the opera, it's a wreck. But if you just listen to the live broadcast; beautiful!
"Was there a specific reason for booing the producer?"
Not really. Only that she had vandalized and made a mockery of the opera that had been entrusted to her care and presented a production of staggering incompetence and incoherence. Other than that, no reason at all.
The production just had too many holes in it, detracted from what is an innocent, simple & sweet pastoral love story, and seemed to have been forged with little or no sensitivity to the musical subtext. Not unenjoyable, but not La sonnambula.
Mary Zimmermann tried to do the "opera in an opera" concept - cast rehearsed the opera and everyone was in jeans and street clothes for some of the time. Other conceptual no-nos included the Duke sleeping in a cot in the theatre..amina somehow sleeping near the rehearsal room, etc.
God!! The You Tube trolls are out in force. I liked it a lot. But trolls like making a stink even more.

Oh, boy. I feel sorry for people who hated this. I had such a lot fun. I especially loved the end of the first act.

I was at the actual performance on saturday, and you could tell that the performers were just milking the call since it was the live broadcast.

They didn't care about Zimmerman, they went to see Dessay and Florez and to see this great Bellini opera which isn't done too often.
Jaydoggy531 2 years ago
ugh. I'm going to see this next week. Hopefully the singing will make up for the ridiculous staging.
Luindriel 3 years ago
The singing itself is supposedly excellent, from both Dessay and Florez. Unfortunately, its in a sausage casing of shit.

Why is this video cut off ? It would be interesting to see the
rest if available
