  • Why does that intro sound like the Del Viking's "Come go with me?"

  • I remember hearing this on a 4 Seasons album..any idea where it is

  • my uncle used to tell me about this song aww

    RIPJoey-o

  • "you couldnt fucking retire?"

  • Doo-wop and classic rock are easily my favorite genres, despite being of a later generation. With that said, there's some good stuff that comes out today, but it doesn't come in nearly the quantities that it did back in the day.

  • This was the song that Angelo Garepe from the Sopranos played in his car before he got whacked.

  • @Jays32Fan He was playing the Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons version... You know... Jersey Boys. That version was here on YouTube for two days and was yanked for copyright reasons yesterday.

  • @Jays32Fan Yup thats where i first heard it and went crazy looking for it on the web.Was on the wrong track looking for Frankie Vallis version since its not there.

  • That is what I am going name by next turtle .

  • Cute dog + great song = wonderful video. Thanks to 92.1 in Vineland, NJ for playing this as 98.1 in Philly would never play something as wonderful as this...Thanks for posting this video AntFL

  • SWEET!!!

  • I love this song, and I'm only 2 years old. I was 97, but then cycled into my next life and had to learn it all again. Doo-wop rules, man!

  • Oh Damn!! I have not heard this in YEARS! Thanks for posting this tune! I've got a grin from ear to ear at this moment!

  • I love this song! I can see Prince remaking it.

  • Yesterday was Joe Cook's Birthday, He turned 88 yrs old.

  • gotta love the dog cute!

  • the do is soo cute!

  • huuuge lou christie fan and i hear this is who influenced him pure awesome such a good tune doo wop 4ever

  • who did the guitar solo

  • tip top doo wop

  • Better than the 4 Seasons version by far!

  • Guy sounds like someone's got him by the gonads....

  • Then there'd be the legal issues. Unless he wrote the song. Will check it out, later if this is important.

The composer would get involved. Why did he sing "Peanut" when I wrote "Peanuts"? Royalties!

Why didn't Little Joe correct the label; the chartmakers; the producer(s); everybody; esp. with the words right in front of him?

Also, Peanuts was a popular nickname back then for teens.

So I"ll stick with "Peanuts"; thank you very

    much!

  • Because he didn't. Remember this was a different day and a different time. Little Joe was a black man with a hit record in a white man's world. If you want to survive you play the game. Check out the Chess brothers'' relationship with their artists, Brunswic'k's relationship with Jackie Wilson; a matter of musical history. Legal concerns were not so much an issue as they are today. Who cared? The record was making money! The record says "Peanuts." Joe sang "Peanut.".. He said so himself.

  • The party who wrote the song must have ok'd it. Normally, there'd be copyright issues.

We who were there were already aware of the racism the black artists had to go through.

    We went to their concerts.

  • It''s just an interesting bit of music trivia from way back in 1957. I remember it well. Just like Dale Hawkins sang "Lat-N-DaDa," not "La-Do-DaDa."

  • Yes! If he said he sang it as "Peanut"; well, there we have it!

Everybody else saw it, heard it, listed it, as "Peanuts".

We had some "gems" back then that aren't heard on oldies but goodies programs.

Examples: "Darling, It's Wonderful" was played a lot by dj's. It didn't make it as a hit back in the '50's.

Also, Shirley & Lee's follow-up to "Let the Good Times Roll": "I Feel Good!"

R&B was tops with us, contrary to those who report we just ignored them in favor of white artists'.

  • Yup! I think we agree! Sorry for the confusion! Just like that guy Buddy Holl(e)y! The "e" was left out by mistake! By the time the omission was realized, the record was out and history was made!

  • Up to a certain point. "Peanut" was just not as commercial as "Peanuts".

As I said "Peanuts" was easy to relate to, because it was a popular nickname for teens.

Even today, "Peanut" is just not an attractive title. So, the label could have added the s for commercial reasons.

I saw Buddy Holly in concert at Long Beach, CA before he was killed in the midwest. Richie Valens, (a stocky, not attractive singer) The Champs, and The Big Bopper played.

I used to buy every new release by BH.

  • This is wonderful doo-wop! The Four Seasons did a fine remake of this song on one of their early albums...

  • Joe's daughter was in the group, The Cookies, their hit was "chains".

  • oh the dog is cute

  • LOL in a way doo wop is kind of Mafia-ish. In Sopranos, Goodfellas, Bronx Tale, and all those other mob movies you hear a lot of doo wop.

  • yes!! my fondest cambridge memories are located 'down at the cantab' as well! during the same period you refer to, the mid 80, i also frequented the 1369 club, and Nightstage. the cantab had the best meltingpot-soul-dancing-drinking-&smoking-neighborhood crowd you could find this side of the nineteen sixties. Joe would do the same song 3 times.. in one set! but nobody cared. hell, we loved hearing 'elvis' and the 'the song that brought joe world fame' peanuts, over and over and over again! bob

  • I love peanuts! Yum Yum PEANUTS!

  • "Down at the Can Tab!"...man, those were the days. As a raw Texan ramblin' around Cambridge back in the '80s, nights at the Can Tab with Little Joe are among my best memories...

  • @txutopian - "Good evening to all you hamburgers and cheeseburgers out there"

  • I found out about this song when I was watching the Sopranos, an episode in season 5.

  • Great song....Is it available?

  • One way to get music from YouTube videos is to get Firefox browser if you don't already have it, and then install DownloadHelper for Firefox. (free) You can then download most YouTube videos onto your computer, then convert the files to MP3 with Any Audio Converter (download this program free). Once they're converted, you can put them on a CD. Sounds complicated, but it really isn't.

  • i am jeff webb and i worked at the cantab lounge years ago i still remember lil joe what a guy.

  • I love this song, and I'm only 17. Doo-wop forever.

  • @76mommie no one gives a shit how old you are. I'm 6.

  • @76mommie Lol amazing how many comment like this you find on youtube this days. Has anyone thought that perhaps that means it isn't such a rare thing then?=P A lot of young people like old songs, a lot don't too of course but still..XD

  • @76mommie I'm only 13 :D

  • When I turned 21 I lived at the Can Tab Thurs, Fri & Sat nights. We'd hit the disco downstairs inbetween sets & then come up & dance like fools till we were drenched in sweat. Joe Rocked & I hope he's still rocking. Mother's Crying again was my favorite song he did!

  • I worked as a bartender for 15 yrs at the TAB when LJC was there 4 night a week.He filled the joint everynight and gave it his all whenever he hit the floor. The 70s were the best. Did you know that George Thorogood started at the TAB?? I miss the old days. Mick

  • I Personally met Joe Cook He is The Most Wonderful Guy .

  • I love the flip side, "Lilly Lou" maybe even more!

  • They are both large. Of course, this song is called "Peanut." 5-star vid.

  • I have the record. It's titled "Peanuts"!

  • renew is right; I, the 'ole lumparoo, stand corrected.

  • Actually the label is wrong. Joe is singing "Peanut." I saw Little Joe interviewed on "American Bandstand" and he mentioned the error!

  • When the record came out, every dj that played it, called out "Peanuts".

When the charts came out, every chart labeled it "Peanuts".

For example, the Billboard charts of the bestselling records of Dec. 23, 1957, put "Peanuts" by Little Joe and the Thrillers, as the #48 biggest seller, in its 12th wk . Everybody I knew back then called it "Peanuts".

Also, when we played it on the jukebox, it was labeled "Peanuts".

When I use ear phones to play it, I hear "Peanuts".

  • it's not a video, it's a slide show.

  • Yusef is a side show.

  • lumpagogo is a freak show.

  • this song!! best song of all time... i mean micheal jackson had some great hits... elvis was pretty decent, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, clapton, elton john all good unless your comparing thier hits to this song.. and if anyone has the oddasidy to do so why dont you check out how huge, THE KING, Little Joe Cook's cock is.. you think superman and heman are cool, little joe cook would smash them both.. ok maybe that was a little off the subject.. i have ADD.. but JOE COOK is king

  • Old-fashioned DOO-WOP goodness!!

  • ahhh the one who started the singing falsetto. lou christie, frankie valle would follow very well.

  • I totally agree with you. The Original sounds a whole lot better than the other two versions....THEY DON'T EVEN COME CLOSE TO LITTLE JOE!!

  • Comment removed

  • You haven't lived until Little Joe Cook has called you a hamburger or cheeseburger!

  • Believe it or not he is STILL performing this at the Cantab lounge in Cambridge,MA.

  • Is he still playing @ The Cantab in Cambridge, MA? He was awesome! and packed the place-also played "Sexy Ladies @the Beauty Shop".

  • wooow my names joe cook lol

  • Great song. Thanks for posting. This may be heresy, but I slightly prefer the 4 Seasons version. but kudos to Joe for writing the song. They sure don't write em like taht anymore.

  • Thank you so much for this!

  • i shook his hand at the bowzer concert.he is 85 and still sounds great, and still can move.

  • Yo HarryGreen 48! Livin in connecticut for too many years, with too few goooood stations, perhaps you and Little Joe at Mohegan can make some huge sounds. I live in Ca because NYC lost its soul. Take care...

  • coincidently, i'm going to bowzer's doowop party at mohegan sun on jan. 20 and little joe cook is going to be doing this song.

  • 9263069: You can get other oldies from the YouTube search,,,put in: JEBauder1948

Or the artists or the titles or even both the artists and titles and you may get what you are looking for....Enjoy! ;-)

  • AntFL: Group as this, plus the Turbans, Fiestas, Corsairs, etc, had such a distinctive sound. Todays Oldies stations always seem to miss these for their packaged top 40. It's been about 30 years since I heard this song from WCBS in NYC. Got any more? keep em comin.
