I love these things! They are like little hill spiders that can go pretty much anywhere. I know nothing about heavy machinery, but I know I want one of these things.
I want to drive one of these soo bad! theres only 1 of them (its a Kaiser tho) In our whole country, was based locally but I havnt seen it in ages. Would love to know where it went too and try and buy it or atleast have a drive.
i can remember starting digging on a JCB 3C mk2, no extending dig, no four wheel drive, no forks, no four in one, no tourque converter, you even had to get out and manually loosen nuts to slide the back end over. Life was a lot simpler then!lol
@bill45colt, Have you ever been to Switzerland? It's a 6th the size of WY and over 2/3 of it are Alps and foothills, if it were to be ironed out it be nice and flat and maybe 5 or 6 times larger... So they've learned well how it use the land that they've got... With this in mind you can see why we Americans would think like you, we've got to space and a lot of flat ground. ...It was in Switzerland that the Menzi Muck was invented and it is in terrain like this that it really shines...
The Mucks are highly specialized ( almost robotic) and rare (only a hundred or so hand made annually) in Switzerland. Like a Swiss watch they keep on ticking and survive extreme uses. Big learning curve to operate one. Buy an older one, work it for a year or two learning the basic moves, and then step up to a newer one as the newer ones are very complex.. New ones are $250K USD and up.
The Muck is not new. 5000+ in various models since the 1960's. Center of gravity is very low ,spreading and angling the wheels and legs positions it for stability on slopes just like in the video. Moving up or down slope is done by use of the boom extension which is capable of moving the machine 6-10' up or down slope, then you reposition the legs, get stable and re-extend the boom to move again. Wet slopes or smooth rock ledges are dangerous, you slide. I run one daily and plan every move.
@carlbous i know it just has so many moving parts from the arms and bucket to the under cariege and wheel base as well as working in the places its designed for just puts more stress on the operator but this guy looks very layed back for where hes working

Way more produce, crops etc on heavy slopes. More surface area.. Plus the irrigation would be way more efficient..

Why all the labor and expense on working such steep hillsides? Whynot flatter ground? Looks like a good rain could wash this all away.
