She's not advocating violence, she's saying violence happens (in the context of the struggle for civil rights), and on balance it's probably best NOT to be violent.

She is talking about how in any uprising or revolution (etc.) it is pretty much inevitable that violence will become part of it, whether on the protesters side or not. She said at the end of the video to not 'break the window unless it's a big part of your strategy'. Its about making your statement loud and clear, and for many this involves not breaking the window.

CONTD 1: (E) this has NOTHING common with Obama. Obama admin and Fed is still bailing out BANKS, creditors, house-repossessors, oil and food speculators, profiteers, those who are transferring their dollars offshore.

I have been working since the age of 16. I have NEVER thought that when I was starting out as part of the working class that I deserved 100K a year. "Liberal moron". We are in an age in the US where anti-intellectualism is not only acceptable but is actually a virtue. It's quite embarrassing. I fairly confident that can crush you intellectually but then that would be an assumption as well know wouldn't it? Just like assuming that I don't work (I've worked my whole life chief). I can from a working class home and worked my way through college and know towards a PhD.

In the past 30 years the U.S. has increased it's work time at work by 20% while the real wages made by the working class has remained relatively stagnant. Compare with Europe for instance where working hours has decreased by 20%. That means that since the mid-1970s as the U.S. working class as produced more it's compensation for producing, i.e. it's wages, has not increased at the same rate.

That is exploitation in the technical sense of the term, i.e., producing more relative to wage compensation, and is one of the reasons the U.S. working class is currently in the most debt that it has ever been in in all of U.S. history. It's not a matter of "pulling yourself up by your bootstraps" but of understanding the context in which the bootstrap is produced in the first place.

Work is produced by a division of labor in a specific social and historical context, not just by isolated individuals. Piven's work is necessary for understanding that social context, and if I have any real critique of her it is that she does is not radical enough.
