Hard to believe sultans is so old! It never is old always sounds like it was recorded yesterday and even sounds it was out recently honestly! Great clip!
I don't understand all the MK v EC stuff. Just appreciate two great guitarists. The only reason people think EC's playing is "simple" is that he wrote the book on how to play rock lead guitar, so 90% of pub players base their style on EC. I prefer MK, but EC has been by far the more influential guitarist, and the stuff he was doing with Cream and DatD was revolutionary back in the day. Music isn't a competitive sport, its about the songs, the feeling, the tone - not how tricky it is to play.
@jakehadlee Amen to that. I prefer MK much more than EC. but they are my two favorite guitarists, alongside david gilmour and Santana. Each guitarists is diffrent, and brilliant for thier diffrence and own personel skill
It looks like Robbie Mcintosh to me. Check out his video called Roll Away here on YouTube. Heavenly. He's an awesome guitar player in his own right. Everytime you hear the awesome guitar solo on Tears for Fears' Everybody Wants to Rule the Word you're listening to Robbie Mcintosh! Hope this helps.
Well pensa guitars are far nicer, but after playing pensas all through the 90s and early 00s he seems to play his signiture strat a lot more now, I can't understand why, because the pensa is the sweetest guitar in the world.
Mark Knopfler is great. Nice to see he got John Illsley out of retirement or whatever he is doing now, still on the Fender P bass that he most probably played on the original recording. Is still think Jack Sonni did the best rhythm work with DS (check out Wembley and Sydney versions - I think the best 2 ever!!!). Can anyone tell me if that's MKs circa 1990's Pensa Surh with the EMGs removed and some other pickups in it? They sound f*ckin' good.
1996the pensa he whas playing on the golden hart tour:-) ;-) he got 12pensa,s and 6 shurs and the got emg humbuckers like the 1 he whas playing on mandela, s party greets;-)
I don't really know, I went on the Rudy Pensa website and I think they said that his most recent one had Di Marzio's. I don't really mind what it is as long as it sounds good. :)
the redd schecter from knopfler that he was jousing on the on every street toer and more and still plays it hes white DI marzio pick-ups in the early days there where black pick ups in it that whas in the begining of the 80tis and on the algemy time the were replace by white DI marzio pick ups i got them in my schecter from the 90tis the sound awsome but mark dont hes DI marzio pick ups in his pensa,s the shur from the on every street toer and golden hart toer got emg humbuckers i love pensa:-)
Eric Clapton...a better guitar player than Mark Knopfler? HA. That would be why at Mandelas Party Clapton ended up doing Rytham guitar whilst Knopfler played lead.
Mark Knopfler has forgotten more about guitar playing than Clapton knows, sure Clapton writes good songs but the guitar playing is not that techniqual
You are one an idiot, and two a very inept guitar player if you think Clapton is even near Knopfler's skill level. Clapton's style consists of blues... and more blues. Where as Knopfler uses jazz, classical, and blues in most of songs, not to mention country occassionaly. I am not saying that Clapton is a bad guitarist, he is a master of the blues. . . but there is just so much that clapton lacks that Knopfler has.
So what you're saying is that Knopfler is a Jack of all trades and master of none! Cool! Couldn't agree more. He doesn't play slide does he? Clapton does! He's never played in a trio! Clapton has! He's never sold out the Albert Hall night afetr night! Clapton has! He rarely performs on acoustic guitar because he's an effects freak and needs reverb and sustain to make up for the spaces in his runs! Clapton could impro on a cheap plastic thing! Knopfler's shit basically. Get over it!
Probably because Eric does the honurable thing and let's Mark have his moment of glory. Eric's a gentlemen. He's knows Mark's gonna wanna do either Brothers In Arms, Sultans of Swing or Money For Nothing, so let's him get on with it, while he 'pretends' to plat second fiddle. If it was the other way round, Mark would ahve to be challeneged - heaven forbid!
That's the best! I've seen it that many times. I love that one. But ONE great solo does NOT make a great guitar player. I'd rather have a guitarist who can think on his toes without having to be prepared beforehand. Sultans of Swing is my favourite solo ever, but c'mon, give us something different (Mark) for a guitar solo!!!!!!! ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Oh, and by the way, Eric plays something different at each special gig he's aked to do! Check out the setlist for the Tsunami benefit, the Queen's golden Jubliee (he played with Brian Wilson!), he's back The Impressions and Billy Preston! What was Knopfler doing? Wild Theme, Brother's In Arms and S of S some place... AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You fucking retard! Why have Eric Clapton said himslef that he iss jellous about Marks exellence and how to find different tunings on the gtr? Mark can play slide, aucustic gtr and he is definetly not an "effect freak", he is a pefectionist which is a BIG difference!
I saw Eric Clapton solo on Mark's "Walk of Life" and it was a joke. Eric Clapton did minor pentatonic the whole time on a happy cajunish song and butchered it. Eric Clapton's slide playing is also a joke. Sultans of Swing interplays with the harmonic minor scale. In other words, it is much harder to solo over than one of Claptons cliche completely diatonic blues tunes. The "humble" E.C. rarely gives Mark solos on any of his songs anyway.
please.. give us a break. Mark improvise EVERY single solo he plays! just listen to Sultans of swing from the 92' on every street tour. The differences between only Basel and Nimes is HUGE! sorry my bad english btw.
Quel classe et quel inspiration ! Une chanson vieille de bientot 30 ans et qui n'a pas pris une ride garce à MR Mark Knopfler qui s'efforce de renouveller son incroyable solo, et qui le reussit à merveille.
@Leksingen what class and inspiration! an old song from almost 30 years ago and which (free:) didn't loose it's catch because mark always reinvents the unbelievable solo (i think:) which he does best.
How the hell he can still play that last minute that fast still.. Only way I will ever be faster than him on a guitar neck is if I glue his fingers togther
Still, it's not about his speed. There are guitarists that are much faster than him, but none of them have nearly as much skill and emotion in their guitar playing. That's why Mark Knopfler is one of the top 5 guitarists of all time.
Great to see John and Mark together, just wish David and Pick were there aswell

Patrick...
Knopfler haven't a Pensa-Shur guitar with Di Marzio Pick-ups...
This one is the Fender TxSpec Model. There's another Pensa-Shur he own, with Emg SA SA 85...
Knopfler own 6 Pensa-Shur guitars.
But no one've Di Marzio Pick-ups. And he never used.
