  • The Orthodox Church should have prevented him from receiving communion during his campaign. Would have made for interesting headlines and bought them solidarity with catholics.

  • Cool guy, I just don't think he would have been fit to run. Not to mention Bill probably wouldn't have gotten in.

  • Dukakis/Cuomo 2016

  • You know, he sounds a bit stronger, quicker on his feet and a bit tougher than he did in 88. He might actually make a better president now than he would have.

  • Where the hell is a time machine when you need one?

  • Wow, very candid response there at the end. And he is partly to blame. He had a 17 point lead in the summer, but hardly campaigned, then sat on a tank in a stupid publicity stunt, and ignored the Bush/Atwater attack politics and Willie Horton ads. But give Bush Sr. credit, he ran a solid campaign, and the Democrats tried to paint him as dumb and aloof, which he wasn't.

Too bad this Dukakis isn't the one that ran for President, he probably would have gotten elected.

  • 2:20-- "Look, if I'd beaten the old man back in '88, we'd have never heard of this kid and we wouldn't be in the mess we're in now.".....LOL

Why couldn't he have had a little more of that spunk 20 years ago?

  • Dukakis ran a terrible campaign and would have lost to Humpty Dumpty.

    He's a bitter little man.

  • I recently saw an old "Saturday Night Live" mock-campaign ad in which Michael Dukakis was a puppet. I honestly don't get the gag?

  • Katie Couric is 52 years old....looks pretty for that age...

  • what was the moment of duke losing the election ? hmmmm... dam tank ride :p love ya duke :)

  • Damn Duke is in shape for an old man.

  • The George W presidency is not dukakis's fault. it is the American people's fault, especially in the south and midwest.

  • I'm a republican, but i have to give Dukakis some repsect. He doesn't talk shit and he admitts he got fairly beat back in '88.

  • I wish Bill Clinton would have lost in 1992 and won in 1996 and 2000. I'm going to pretend that happened.

  • I've never supported a candidate as wholeheartedly as I did The Duke.

  • ???

  • no, it was nail polish remover

  • Interesting to see how his attitude has changed. He's the victim of the most vicious and racist smear campaign in modern U.S. history. He'd have made a marvelous President but his downfall was never hitting Bush Sr. right back in the mouth. I'm glad Obama hit back.

  • *sight*

    What could have been...

  • Thank you, Katie, 'tis great!

  • No. Actually, thank God YOU LOST!

Last I checked, your new President of the United States of America is Barack Hussein Obama.

NOW is what counts. Get ready to be miserable with the rest of your conservative dirt for the next eight, long, long years!

Woo Hoo! Conservatives are either selfish or stupid. Or both, in most cases...but LOSERS any way you cut it!

  • what a shame... if Dukakis was elected back then, history would have changed, everything better for the US as well as the EU and the rest of the world. Bush cenior and son have truly destroyed the world.

    How would history have changed....

  • Thank goodness Bill Clinton beat Bush, Sr. in 1992.

  • @fkanellis Things would have been a disaster. Thank God we voted Bush over Dukakis.

  • Dukakis doesn't owe the American people anything. I was only eight when he ran but I liked him better. The American people owe him the apology because they're the ones who didn't vote for him.

  • Great video... I supported Dukakis in 1988, but I was in second grade so that didn't count. When John Luvits was on SNL he played Dukakis and said "I can't believe I'm loosing to this guy" referring to H.W Bush

  • Dukakis = The President that should have been

    Atwater got what he deserved.

  • wow, i saw Dukakis 20 years ago in akron ohio.. i was ten.. so didn't really know much about him.. but he seems like a really cool, intelligent, guy.

  • wow. I like him too. I wonder what people think, if he is arrogant, or humble, in saying that he feels it is his fault, and all...

  • This is awesome. I thought it was great when Katie talked to my friend Toby while he was dressed up as Lucifer at the DNC, but this might be even better. On a separate note, have their ever been two more misunderstood presidential nominees than Dole and Dukakis? After each failed to win the presidency, it became obvious that they were honest, interesting people who were not accurately portrayed by neither their own campaigns nor the media.

  • "If I'd beaten the old man, we'd have never heard of the kid and we wouldn't be in this mess." Great quote.

  • Great job, great interview!!

  • Great interview Katie. Ya gotta love Mike Dukakis, though he looks a little old to have been born after the Carter administration. (Just kidding, I know that he was just taking a shot at his political opposition.)

  • Mike Dukakis is the un-politician, one of the most regular, smart, and caring men ever to run for president. It is typical of him to accept the blame for losing in 1988. It's not his fault. Then, as now, we get what we vote for.

  • You did a good job in interviewing Michael Dukakis. I always look forward to your interviews and other vids.

  • Great interview, Katie! I admire Mike Dukakis.
