@uninvited1 I understand where you are coming from. But they are profssional athletes in peak physical condition. They should be able to adjust. they know it's going to be hot in Aus.
Heat this the Heat that... Professional players should be able to play in any condition. Where im from. the temperature is 40+ every day through out summer. no breeze nothing. It's hard but not llike they playing it out to be. I play baseball in this heat standing on the field and running hard and diving on blue metal and dirt skinning my knees and hands. The heat should never be an issue. they played in it for two weeks. they should be used to it!
@Dadge1989 The heat wave kicked in 2 days before the final - they hadn't had the opportunity to get used to it. If temperatures are that extreme constantly where you are then it makes sense that it wouldn't be an issue for you.
Martina seems to be more mentally fragile than what her achievements suggest. She's used to easy wins, rather than fighting for them, and when things get tight she shies away from any aggressive play. That, IMO, was what stopped her from winning more slams and fulfilling the enormous potential she had.
Capriati "one slam" material? If anything, she underperformed when she didn't play or played sporadically all those years. She should have 6-7 total slams IMO

@hrhsam People forget that Jennifer was injured in this tournament (she had a right hip strain and had both hips strapped). The fact that she physically outlasted Hingis and save 3 of the 4 matchpoints against her with winners or forced errors is remarkable!
Hingis been in the AO final six consec times, winning 3. According to her, the two she feared the most in tennis are Novotna and Capriati - only because she said that JC has all the shots in the book and she execute well if and when she wants to be aggressive.
@rehabboy01 In way, Martina's mother is responsible for giving Jennifer confidence in coming back. She saw Capriati practicing with Hingis (in late 2000 I think) and said to Jennifer that she should be "top 4." The irony is of course, that Jennifer went on to beat Hinigs enroute to all of her grand slam wins...
i agree that steffi was a great champion and better than martina but the cicumstances of the 99 french with everything was traumatic wasnt it that's what i meant and this match martina being up so much and still losing must have felt like a kick in the head.
@SharapovaVideos I love Martina and in a way her early ascent was a double-edged sword. She achieved too much too soon, and having the world at her feet before even reaching 18 years old was probably a big reason why she didn't take her position (as the then number 1) seriously or responsibly enough.
@Hokit hi, you said... "She achieved too much too soon, and having the world at her feet before even reaching 18 years old was probably a big reason why she didn't take her position (as the then number 1) seriously or responsibly enough."
Another big reason why Hingas didn't fulfill potential (probably THE BIGGEST reason), is because she spent far too much time at the French Open sniffing up the chalk lines. =P
@markisb62 I think that Hingis DID fulfill her potential. She came along when Graf was on the verge of retirement, struggling with persistent injuries, and Seles was never the same post stabbing. There was a hole at the top of the game that Hingis was able to fill, but when the bigger, stronger players (Davenport, Capriati, Williamses) started to come into their own, she had nothing with which to fight them at the end of the day.
That said, I'll take Hingis over Wozniacki any day. ANY day.

this is the most tragic martina loss in my opinion even more than the french in 99 because she has championship points here and was a set and 4-0 up i believe if she would have won this match she wouldn't have stopped playing at the end of 2002
tragic until you see Martina screaming like shit to one of the ball boys/girls at the interval.......most tennis players think their chocolate and can speak like shit to everyone
Hingis had an unmatched grace on the court, just so so smooth and fluid. And Jennifer, despite me not really liking her angry swearing fits, had one of the best free-flowing forehands to watch.
Hingis was at his best in the beginning of the match...great match of both, just see the first point to see how good they played, they will both still be in the top 10 with such a level!
It would've been nice to see her win the 04 Open. I can't believe I've warmed up to Capriati, I used to hate her lol. I still dislike her somewhat but I'll live.
Capriati is so underated! She was one of the best players ever and if she had stay fit or injury free she would be winning slams now. Come back Jen please
ohhh man ESPN ...if Hingis won ,I would have around 5000 $ ....and I could not do livebetting in the USA..on betfair.....paintfull memories..Hingis had 2 mp..ohh man .I was in the gym ,watching this one......Hingis should have won !!..I would have ex with tha czech chik later that day !!!ohhh man ..Hingis you should definetely win !!!ohh man ..
At this time, there are no great players standing above everyone else, i miss this era of great players like capriati, davenport, hingis, pierce, henin,... Thank God Clijsters will be back. She's a great player too and my favorite
will someone PLEASE upload the full match. This is one of the greatest performances I've ever seen, and other people should see Capriati's unbelievable comeback.
This is such a sad match for all Hingis' fans and Martina herself. She deserved to win and wanted badly, but it wasn't meant to be. I honestly think that had Hingis won that match, she never retire that year.
no that was 2001 :) martina beat serena in the quarters 8-6 in the third set and the next day beat venus 6-1 6-1 i have that highlights with venus on my videos in my channel
I wish Martina had won this, but still a great match. Hasn't been a grand slam final as exciting as this since Wimbledon 2005. Missing players like Martina and Jennifer who had such a will to win. It's easy to forget, watching this match and RG99, that Martina herself was an amazing fighter - remember she came back from 4-1 (two breaks) down in final set against Serena in 2001. Saved match points Wimbledon '07. This match against Jen was a physical collapse before a mental one.
so heart breaking to watch! i remember watching this when i was 13, sitting at the edge of my couch...imagine the emotion hingis would have let out, had she won this!...i cant handle watching this!
I dont think Capriati was fitter but Hingis was the better player with her tatics I think it was either that Aus open or the one before it Where she beat Venus in the Semis 6-1, 6-1, because she used her tatic.
this is one of my favourite matches ever. considering the extreme heat it was played in, the quality of tennis was incredible. heartbreaking for martina but jen fully deserved this win. this match is one of many that show what an incredible fighter jen is. not many others would find the strength to come back from 4-6 0-4 in these conditions.
great match but at the season 2001 and 2002 jennifer was better than martina i think last grand slam that martina won was in 1999 it was australian open but at that moment tennis was more powerful and capriati was just fighting and she deserve to win 2001/2002 jennifer was better

Horrible player Capriati? LOL... that's why Jenn beat Martina everytime they played from 2001-forward and at all slams (let's not forget the straight set lashing Capriati handed Hingis at the French Open in 2001)...
She was only a casual user, the only one time unlike someone we know.
But dont worry peeps Hingis and Capriati havnt retired yet, Hingis is making a comeback this year before Wimbledon and Capriati has suicidal thoughts and says she is nothing without tennis so its obvious she coming back.
