I think some are over-reacting to this movie. Great directing and a top-notch cast hide some cartoon-like caricatures of "evil rednecks". Most small towns wouldn't tolerate men like these for long. I can see why other movies ripped this one off when the kids who were impressed by this grew up to make their own movies. I wasn't expecting the way Durning's character bites it at the end. This flick was almost certainly the inspiration for "Punpkinhead" as well.

Also, what a great way to celebrate the fact that four men killed an innocent man at 9:55. An innocent man who was mentally challenged and saved the life of a little girl... What lowlife people that town has. I felt bad for Bubba's mother considering how everyone reacted.
