imo there are two answers, the templars AKA the masons OR the egyptians. These elaborate cases tend to be burial sites - such as the pyramids in Egypt. Nobody would go to this length to bury monetary treasure. The only other explanation would be an item of unknown importance.

@coleon8 I am not sure where you are getting your historic facts, but I can find no records of Oak Island ever being a prison. Running sea water through coconut fiber into a 200 foot shaft will not desalinate it. I am not sure where you got the scientific evidence for this. I think that you may have just increased the mystery.

i did reading comprehension today and it was on the mystery of oak island. it was really cool. In 1870 some people lowered a video camera into the pit and they saw images of said 2 B wooden chests, tools and even a human hand.

The stone, or at least the interpretaion of some sort of markings, sounds like a bit of a lark to me. Hard to say. Not much from history is actually in museums today. Most things that people found hundreds of years ago where just kept as trinkets and then lost or given away when the original person who found it died.

There are some plots of land that are privately owned on it and there is now a causeway built from the island to the mainland. A few years ago there were some plots up for sale, but the price was ridiculusly high. I am not sure if they sold or not..
Even if there is no treasure it should be investigated simply to see who went to these great lengths to create such an elaborate pit. It would be something archeologist would want to research and study, and another question people should be asking is who had the knowhow to dig something so elaborate in the first place.
@schizoidboy I am just speculating, but from what I've learned, I'm leaning toward some sort of cult. Masonic perhaps. Throughout history there have been organizations who were the keepers of "mystical" knowledge involving astronomy, earth sciences and engineering. To keep this knowledge for themselves guaranteed them high social status. Whatever is down there was too important to destroy and too important to let others know.
