dude... the original playstation only had 2 controller slots right?

Yes, but the Playstation had the Multi Tap, which had four controller spaces and could be plugged into the Playstation controller socket. This allowed up to five players (though most games had a maximum of four players) and two Multi Taps meant eight people could play (but games that were able to have that many players were rare).
