This was 1983 - pe-restrictor plate days. Cars were hitting well over 200 mph in those days; Elliott qualified on the pole at Daytona in '85 at over 210 and at Talladega at over 212 mph. Rusty was just never very good - or lucky - at Daytona and Talladega.
I think Rusty had four big flips in his career...this one, one at Bristol in 1988 in practice and the two in '93 at Daytona and Talladega...The Bristol crash is the only one that didn't happen in the infield.
Actually ECM is correct, Julius "Slick" Johnson did indeed die after a wreck in the 1990 ARCA 200 at Daytona. It was the same race that saw the track worker get hit by a spinning car as well as Ramo Stott flipping wildly down the backstretch.
Actually Elliott Sadler did that at Talladega a couple years ago too, he had the blowover on the backstretch in '03 and I think it was the next year he flipped again at the finish line but landed on all 4 wheels.
If I remember right he DID win the Bud Shootout in 1998...but he never won a points-counting race at a plate track. Anyway, this was a few years before the plates...
Well, Rusty did win the Bud Shootout in 1998, but it's a non-point race, so, unfortunately, it doesn't count. But he got better at Daytona and Talladega later in his years. If he had still drove for another couple of years, he may have won a restrictor plater race.
@wwetnaecw - Well, not that this really counts, but he won a Bud Shootout at Daytona. Not a points race.... but that is the extent of his plate wins. Bummer.....

Cripes so this accident came before he flipped at Dega and Daytona

I think Rusty might have logged more time upside-down than any other driver in Cup history.
astatslpvids 4 years ago
He's the only driver to finish the race upside down in the air.

The 2nd time Elliot flipped it was in the tri-oval on the last lap and he actually finished 22nd.
