It's certainly not impossible. I got to the air wzard in about 3 hrs with a gem pick and gem sword. Got quite a few hits in before I got overwhelmed by minions. You just need to take your time. I used about 30 lanterns.

I died on the air wizard my first time, but I got there without cheats. When you are in the mines, bring a few lanterns. If you are careful you can make it to the gem mines with one lantern. Constantly switch out the lantern with your shovel. Dig trenches with your shovel, while avoiding the water and lava edges so you don't fill your trench. If you do, just toss dirt on the breach quickly. Use your trench as a pathway as monsters cannot get past them. It is slow going but it is possible.

@rokkarokkaali so you need to go into the mine to find a deeper mine stair case then in the deeper mine you need to find a nether staircase. so in the deeper mine you find gold in the nether you find the gems :) good luck
