What a great bunch of girls, they had the whole package, up there with the Ronnetes and Shirelles.Beauty and class. Thanks so much for the post Vattaja.
It was 1964. Vietnam War was heating up. I was going through Basic Training in the Army. We were given one break. The Chiffons came to Ft. Knox to perform for the troops. I'll never forget standing near the stage and hearing them perform this song. While they were singing, this song, of them looked down at me, winked and smiled at me. It tore me up. All the guys went ballistic over them.
What a group! What memories! This is the only version that comes close to Dion and the Belmonts, but in the Chiffon's pinpoint harmony, they make this doo-wop in Chiffon unique style. For me, they were the best girl group of them all.
I met these girls in the Dobbs House around 1963 they came in after a night at the Gvlle. mem. auditorium, they were so nice,I was 10 years old,I wonder how they are today?
@EmilyARTS the genre is alive and well. the problem today is radio who made these groups back then theres too much news talk+ politcal correctness rush limbaugh glen beck etc and these other idiots the rebel johnny kline
After 1967 there did not need to be anymore songs written or new artists. These Doo Wop artists (+ Crystals, ronettes, ) were the top of the spectrum for the next 50 years!! Thanks!
im 19 and I must say that music back from the 50's and early 60's was awesome. I wish I lived in that time eriod to see all of these artists live in concert.
One of THE best girl-group recordings of all time. It has everything: the lead singer's perfect voice; ingeniou snacking vocals; perfect band. It sounds like butterscotch coming out of the speakers : )
Well, no, those aren't the words - but they'd be appropriate here.
I've liked the Dion & The Belmonts version of this song since I first heard it as an oldie in the middle 1970s. And now, decades later, I encounter this version and I like it just as much.
@Building529 Judy Craig-Mann still performs today as lead of the "Chiffons'" with her daughter and another young lady. You`re correct, she has a very distinctive and sweet lead voice.
I loved all the girl groups...especially The Shirelles, Chantals, Chiffons, and Patti Labelle and The Bluebelles. While the legendary SUPREMES were technically a "girl group" (3 girls), they actually took the whole genre to a whole new level and are really in the same category as The Beatles. The Beatles were technically a boy band..............but also in a category of their own. My favorite song by the Chiffons other than the hits is "Love Me Like you're Gonna Leave Me."
Lol who do you think had this melody first, Randy and the Rainbows - Till I heard from you or this song? =P I found it interesting that's all. No hate =D
Doo Wop is alive and kickin', thank you very much! Many young folks are finding the music as an alternative to top 40 of the day. Groups are singing out of colleges. There are groups all over the world doing doo wop. The music is big with the Low Rider fans. Maybe it isn't what is happening on the top of the charts, but it will always remain in our hearts. Doo Wop 'til you drop.
@BelfastAtheist With all due respect, Easy Ese,! She is right..
She is 100% correct. The major young demographic supporting this music in the US , hence in the world , is Lowriders. Especially Chicanos, although some African Americans and "Anglos" are Lowriders it is mostly us Chicanos who pass it on from generation to generation. Check out BrownPrider Oldies for an example. I know her comment may seem odd to you but it is true.
Plenty of evidence just on YouTube that the Lowriders are major doo-woppers (Bless them!) and there's the wonderful Alley Cats too who represent so well. I'm so happy when I see groups from all around the world, all races, many nations, all ages, singin' like Brooklyn circa '57. Beautiful!
Great post of superb cover of the great Dion and Belmont doo wop anthem! The Chiffons are my favorite girl-group ,followed by the Clickettes,Shirelles and Chantels.
The Supremes were a wonderful motown group but Chiffons, Clickettes,Shirelles ,Chantels and Ronettes were more to my taste, having had more doo-wop and doo-wop-like sounds rather than the Soul-Pop sound of the Supremes. But ,make no mistake, they were excellent..
luv'em all. I think doo wop is sadly gone. My kids like it though. Anyway, when I think of "girl groups", I think Supremes before all others. But as you say, they are definitely a Motown sound not a doo wop sound. But, the gospel.blues roots that made Motown are just ... cool. Anyway, thanks for posting this outstanding recording.
One of the BEST girl-group covers of all time. There is so much going on in this song. Try playing it in you car, all amps up, bass blasting: you'll see what I mean.
This was Dion and the Belmonts' first Top 40 hit in 1958. Five years later, their labelmates the Chiffons (both groups recorded for Laurie Records) recorded this classic.
ahaha wow! dion is dion, but hell listen at the drumming on this one!

A lot of these type of songs, Doo wop, were recorded by UK doowop bands of the late 70s such as Showaddywaddy and The Darts. The music is timeless.
