  • i currently have the hicolor in red and i wanted to dye it a soft brown using the hicolors as well. since you mentioned that you tried the other colors, how was it dying it from red(ish) to brown? i fear that the new brown will turn out very light because my hair isnt that dark right now its fairly light/bright because of the red. did you have trouble getting the color you wanted?

  • @Yanely262

Hi...I would wait till the red fades a little more. Otherwise the red will over power the brown and make it a brownish red. As far as dying it with the soft brown. I used a 30 volume developer and left it in for an hour to get a lift that was 1-2 shades lighter than black. Which made it a medium dark brown. I did use it again after 48hrs because I wanted a medium soft brown....Hope this helps.

    Dollfacebettie :)

  • hello sa pilipinas ba may produkto bang pangtanggal ng kulay sa buhok may alam kba? pls replay knaman oh

  • did you like the light auburn hair colour? if you have a picture could you please post it so i could see. i really wanted to dye my hair the colour didnt know if it would look good though

  • @saywhatx4ily I would start with the 30 volume. It will slightly change the color but if you want more of a change I would go with the 40 volume but you need to watch your hair and dont let it sit for longer than 30 mins. You will also need to condition your hair really well afterwards.

  • @thekawaiiotaku Well I don't think there are one day hair dyes...but there are a variety of temporary hair dyes which wash out after a couple of weeks. I like to use Manic Panic, Kool-Aid (yes the kind you drink), Streaks N Tips, Clairol and etc. You can find these at Sally Beauty Supplies.

  • Could you find this in a everyday drugstore?

  • I have a question I wanted to dye my hair red and used a box dye from Feria but it was too dark and thought about the red one from these hiColor from loreal do you think would I need to remove the color or just re do my hair?

  • i want to dye my hair like an ash blone

right now its like a natural black

so i was thinking i would use a 40 vol. developer

    would u say thats ok??

  • @Rachellbbyyy Using a 40 volume developer is going to fry your hair. Going from a very black to ash blonde takes careful planning and is hard to do if you have never done this before. I would first go to a salon to get this done. But if your adventurous and experience I would do this in several steps. By using a blue based bleach. Then applying a toner to remove any orange/yellow color. Once Once you have a nice base you can apply hair dye in ash blonde. Careful to not go green.

  • to test hair dyeing products i always die my downstairs hair :) XD

  • i have a question

i used this hair dye Coolest brown

with a 40 volume developer to life the dark brown hair i have right now

months ago i dyed my hair black but faded and now looks dark brown

i dyed it and it only left my in growin roots a very light brown

to dye the rest of my hair light brown like my roots r now

do i need to use bleach?????

  • @Misseatsalot Give it a week or two before you re dye your hair. The roots tend to dye lighter if you started with it first. Usually after two weeks the roots will get darker. Do you have a pic you can send?

  • I have black hair and I want the dye to turn out intense without me having to bleach it. So could I use L'oreal Excellence HiColor in Red with a 30 volume creme developer? i was considering 40 but I heard it does alot of damage.

  • @LosewithHonesty Depends on the health of your hair. If your hair is damaged I would not use 40 especially with bleach. If you want you can dye your hair a couple times with the color that you want with 30 volume but its a lengthy process. I usually use 40 when my hair is at the healthy state and I usually get the intensity that I want. But using 40 volume with bleach is more damaging than using it with colored dye.

  • @LosewithHonesty The intense red in this line is meant for highlight so they will be visible depending on lightening. If you want the true color to show you would need to bleach your hair slightly lighter or use the 40 volume. It can be damaging and you can fry your hair. I have had no problems because i use it for a very short amount of time and condition my hair really well afterwards.

  • Hey. I live in the UK and find it really difficult to get my hair to colour. It is darkest brown. I can't afford to get it done professionally. In the UK when you buy hair dye everything comes in one box like the gloves and all. I want to buy the intense red. I have thick, long hair. What else do I need to buy to do everything? And could you do a basic step by step for me?

  • I just bought this in Shimmering gold, with 20 volume developer, my hair is medium brown and im trying to go lighter, will it turn my hair orange?

  • @daniellabella1234 Yes it could turn out orange if your hair naturally has red tones. I would do a test strand underneath your hair to see how well it turns out. I would do a 2 test strands one for 30mins and another at an hour. To see which is the best outcome.

  • this product works awesome , i had black dyed hair and used this in Magenta color with a 40 developer worked with no problem at all :)

  • i really like the color. Where did you get it ?

  • @rockinpoison89 I bought it at Sally Beauty Supply.

  • I have Asian black hair and I want to get a brown colour wut should I do first? Lighten it? if so what products do u recommend? and do I do if I have to lighten it?

  • @thisishowitgoes32 No you don't have to lighten it. But if you have healthy hair I would suggest using 40 volume. 30 volume you would have to dye your hair 2-3 times to get a medium dark brown color.

  • wait, where can you buy 40 volume developer?

  • @minigrl12 You can find 40 volume developer at a beauty supply store. The store I purchase them from is Sally's Beauty Supply.

  • Dude..how much is this stuff? (:

  • @PollyannaKem I purchase these products from Sally Beauty Supply and the dye is about $5.99 and the developer is about $1.79.

  • biiiggg question i used this 4 the 1st time (red) and my roots came out a lighter red on my roots why did it do that and what do i do

  • @cadalacin Hi this usually happens if you dont save the roots and process it for the last 15-20 mins. But dont worry this usually happens and it takes about a week or two to lighten...just be patient.

  • i've never dyed my hair before and am planning to dye it blonde-brown ish. What volume should I get since my hair is black and what kind of hair color do you recommend? I d k what kind of color i should get to get the color i want for my hair. pleaaaase answer me (:

  • @itszMaeee Hi...if you are starting with black hair...i would not expect to go blonde brown in one step. You will have to lighten your hair with bleach, apply toner and then dye your hair the appropriate color.

I would use prism lites in blue for the bleach...and wella color charm in blue or purple for toner.

Once your hair has lightened you can apply a nice blonde brown hair dye to your hair. You just want to make sure it is toned correctly with the orange or yellow removed.

  • my natural color is black..i have caramel highlights in at he moment. once it grows out a little id like to color it completely to a chocolate brown (or the same color as yours), can i use the 30 developer and the hicolor for this?

  • @socialsunshine Yes...depending on what shade you want to use just make sure that the hair dye is darker than the carmel highlights. I will also be doing the same. Since this video I have blonde highlights and will be covering them with chocolate from Loreal mega browns.

  • hi! awesome review and i actually made me go buy this product. i have black hair (and i have colored it many times before) and i wanted to go lighter for summer, so i got it in soft auburn. however, i was pretty disappointed with the turn out and it barely shows. like the only time you can actually see it was in the sun, and that's pretty much it... was i supposed to leave in the product for more than 30 mins? or did it have to do with the developer i used? what is your advice?

  • @TheresesxPieces Hi if you started out with black hair you should use a 40 volume developer. The 30 volume is just not enough to lift black. When I have to dye my hair from black to a light brown I use a 40 volume creme developer and leave it in for no longer than 45mins. You will need to check frequently to make sure your hair is in good condition. I check about every 5-10 mins.

  • filipino?

  • @elenavlada 100% filipino :)

  • i have black/dark brown hair and I was wondering if this product would color my hair? I've never dyed it and I was wondering whether I would need to bleach it or if I could just use the developer and the hair dye. My hair is afro texture and I don't really have the money to have it done professionally so I'm trying to stay away from the bleach.

  • @pinkpantherslim Yes...depending on what you want to do. I would use either a 30 or 40 volume creme developer. 40 volume will lift your hair to a nice medium brown. However...I've never dyed african american hair before. I would suggest first asking any family members or do a search on youtube. I know there is hair dye meant for african america hair...but I think this product will also work. I would consult with a sally beauty sales person...they would no a for sure answer.

  • Can you buy any devloper or does it have to be loreal....? I ordered some of the hair color online as I live in Australia and they dont have it here and forgot to order the developer..

  • @cmphillips1968 Yes you can use any type of clear or creme developer. I would suggest using creme developer because its not as messy and sticks to your hair better. Just make sure you buy the right volume for your hair :)

  • hi i have dark brown hair and want light ash brown what colour do u suggest me getting?

  • @LuuvYouLongTime This is a tough one dark brown hair doesnt really go ash brown to well...normally, black to dark brown hair have a red tone. But it really depends on the type of hair you have and dye history. If you've dyed your hair before and usually get a red tone...I would try a warmer brown color its really hard to achieve a neutral color from home. I would try Loreal Excellence HiColor in Ash Blonde or Loreal Mega Blonde in MB8 Cool Ash Blonde (this may be better it is a cool tone).

  • @dollfacebettie Also before you make the purchase consult with a Sally Beauty Supply Consultant they are always helpful. But if I were to do this I would use Loreal Mega Blonde in MB8 Cool Ash Blonde...since I have black hair I would probably take an extra step and do a light bleach lift with a blue toner before applying this dye.

  • how much developer would you need for one loreal hicolor for dark hair?It says 2.5 oz but some use 4oz.I'm not really sure.get back at me.thanks

  • @Ntxawnable For this product you only need 2.5floz of developer...however they do not just sell 2.5fl oz of developer the smallest is the 4oz bottle. Make sure you also buy an applicator bottle that has fl oz measurement on the side for easy measuring :)

  • I absolutely love L'oreal Excellence for dark hair only :)first fav is Magenta if I wanna go Bright and my second Fav is Deep Auburn Red if I want to go dark.

  • Uuuu

  • I've dye my hair black like 3 or 4 times in the pass 8 months, but now i wanna go bck to a lighter color, like an ash brown or blonde, you think this product would help me get the black outta my hair? i've read it does but after a while it goes bck to dark :( or that it leave ur hair orange :/ i dont wanna bleach it, i went blck cuz i wanted to to let it rest from all the bleaching for a while lol.

  • @Gb4yb4y I would talk to a sally's consultant and see if a color remover would work better for you. Sometimes dye will work on removing the black...but if you dyed it several times it may lift as if you did have black hair and can potentially lift it orange. I would try a hair color remover first there are a variety out there...Loreal Color Zap or Ion Color Brillance Stainr Remover again I have never tried it so consult with the sallys consultant for the best one to use :)

  • So developer is bleaching or not?

  • @sneakytalk The developer is an activator that works with the hair dye. It is usually hydrogen peroxide which works with the hair dye color to deposit hair color into the hair shaft. Unlike bleach which penetrates the hair shaft and disperses hair molecules which in turn makes your hair lighter. So no developer is not bleaching.

  • This was sooo very helpful x thank you xxx

  • hi there!!! i have a question hope you can help me with this. i dye my hair last night( was black) i wanted to get brown as you have in this video. using a revlon product, but my hair color still black only top of my hair is a bit brown, now i want to go to sally beauty supplies to buy that color that u are talking about in this video, Do you think it can works at my dark hair?

  • @bipasha74 hmmm. I think it will may turn out a littlle warmer than the cool brown. But I would let your hair rest first then use a 40 volume developer instead of a 30 volume unless your hair is a medium brown. If you decide to use the 40 only leave it in for the suggest time of the hair dye package.

  • that is a cool brown

  • thx for d help.... it helps alot....well to no, before anything happens when trying to dye your hair with a new color.... :)

  • @amzira How odd...I've never used hair dye without the developer. I am also not familiar with hair dye from london. But here even boxed dye comes with developer. First and foremost, choose the hair color that you would like to use from this brand I use Loreal HiColor in Cooler Brown. Then I choose the type of creme developer. I have to lift my hair from black so I need to lift it 3-4 levels so I use 40 most use 30 depending on your starting hair color.

  • Once you have the proper hair dye and developer. You mix all of the hair dye product with 2.5floz of creme developer into your hair bottle. Shake it up till the product is well mixed and apply to hair. You can leave it in your hair for the suggested time or for 1 hour. Then wash and rinse :)

  • @sneakytalk Yes my hair color is naturally dark black...the blackest black possible...lol. Yes, from my experience I have used 40 volume to reach a desired medium brown with either Loreal Excellence HiColor in cooler brown (without the red shade) or Loreal Mega Browns (more on the chocolate red side). But make sure to always condition your hair afterwards.

  • @PoisonMe666 Well...I would consult with a Sally's Beauty Consultant. I think if you dyed your hair black and it was naturally a light brown you can use a hair color remover. But I have no experience in this process...I have not used it so far but I know it exist. I would try going to Sally Beauty Supply and asking. But technically if it works you just use the color stripper to remove the black and you should be able to dye your hair to the proper color or red.

  • hey so i have dyed my * with the same product as you have * in red and magenta colors, I am now thinking of dying the bottom half of my hair into a natural blond color but not sure if the color will come out. My hair is a dark brownish color, but since i have dyed portions of my hair, thos parts are a light brownish color, do you think the blonde would come out... I need your hair tips, please help :) thx.... i can send a pic of how my hair looked when red and how it looksnow if it helps

  • I've used this stuff. It might work like that for your hair, but if you have dark hair with a lot of red highlights (which I and most brunettes of North Europe descent do) it WILL turn your hair dark orange-red.

  • Sell***

  • Do you know anywhere in Australia that would see this? Or any sites that post to Australia for cheap? Thanks

  • @XxLilyLudicrousXx Hi, I tried to do a search for you but with no luck. I would try ebay or the Sally Beauty Supply website

  • it's beautiful. I have jade black color. With this product can I have medium brow color on my black hair.

  • @sneakytalk Yes...but you will need to use 40 volume or if you want to avoid using 40 volume just dye your hair twice with 30 volume developer.

  • Hey dollfacebettie!, My hair is naturally dark brown almost to black and if i want to add peek a boo highlights with the L'Oreal Excellence HiColor Red, Do i mix that with a creme developer and apply it on my hair?

  • @RawrCrystallll Yes, you will want to use a 40 volume creme developer and make sure you use foil to avoid adding dye to hair that you dont want colored :)

  • HI I have colored hair, red, blonde highlights and my black roots are coming in, i want it a light brown color or even med brown, dont want it dark what cani use? I'm stuck, can you help? Thanks.

  • @maria1010ish , this is a tough one...if your hair is still red a light to medium may not be able to fully cover the red highlights. You may want to wait till it fades to a carmel color. When I had red and blonde highlights...I was able to cover them with Loreal HiColor in cooler brown...but it is more of a dark brown.

  • Comment removed

  • Hi. My natural hair colour is black ( very dark brown) and i've never died it before. i'm using the loreal exellence hicolor but don't know if i should use a 30 volume developer or a 40 ? i want to go 1 shade lighter , so a medium brown??

  • @8hotchocolate8 well depends on what your interpretation of 1 shade lighter means...30 volume lifts 1-2 levels but most people feel that 1 shade lighter is not noticeable because usually you just see some red tones added to your black hair. If you are trying to reach an over all lighter shade I would suggest using 40 volume which lifts 3-4 levels and will lift the black more to a dark or medium brown.

  • hey dollfacebettie i just dye my hair chestnut brown but it kind of came out orange my normal hair color is dark brown almost black how can i fix it?? i want to get a light brown more like a cool brown instead of a warm brown, or i would like 2 dye it a chocolate brown like a nice burgundy brown can you help me plz???

  • Yes, this product will work. I have dyed my hair black before and applied intense red. However, keep in mind that the red palettes in this line are only for highlights. So it will still keep your hair black if you want a more dramatic effect. I would use 40 volume or lighten your hair with bleach to a medium brown. i would not leave the bleach in for very long probably 10mins no more than 30 if you really want a light rusty brown. Then apply the red dye.

  • How long do you keep your dye on? I just did a strand test and it didn't change my color at all. My hairs brown and i got vanilla champagne (which is a darker blonde color). And i used a 30 developer.

  • I keep my hair dye on for about an hour. I also use 30 or 40 volume developer. If I want to have extreme lift I will use 40 volume for no longer than 30 - 45 minutes. If your original hair color is black. I would suggest bleaching your hair first before using the darker blonde color. Otherwise you may get orange hair that can be corrected immediately with blue toner...do not wait...toner has to be applied asap.

  • hey dollface love ur hair...I want 2 go dark ash blond.. my natural hair color is dark brown and i had ry to go ash but it turns orange... what do yo think i should do???

  • I recommend using prismlites in blue for your hair if its closest to black. If your hair is a medium to light brown I would go with prismlites violet. I would use 30 volume its going to take a long time to lift but keep an eye on it. Your hair is going to turn rusty orange or banana yellow. You will need to use a toner like white lady. To remove those orange and yellow tones. Then dye your hair with a boxed blonde color of your choice.

  • hi again! soo if i decide to use a 40 volume color developer. that's kinda like using something to life my hair's color right? i wldn't have to use bleach then right? kuz it sounds like the 40 volume developer does that job to lighten the hair? am i wrong ? & i wntd to kno if you just used only the 40 volume developer to lighten your hair?

  • Using 40 volume will have extra lifting than using a 30 volume developer. But be cautious you dont want to use this on damage hair or it can potential break. Do not leave it in your hair for more than 45 mins and you want to constantly check every 5 mins. You only want to use bleach if you need to lighten your hair to extreme levels like black to blonde bleach will be faster. My rule of thumb is using 40 volume to lift a shade lighter than my current hair...so black to medium brown.

  • Hi dollfacebettie, just want to say that I love the colour and your hair looks so shiny too!

I have naturally black hair which is pretty fine and I'd like to use this dye - how long do you think I should leave it in for and do you think it will cause much damage/breakage? I'd like to add highlights as well, just a really subtle contrast. Is there a shade you would recommend to do this?

  • It really depends on how healthy your hair is and if you have used the product before. I have used this product for a long time so I usually use 30 volume for about an hour and 40 volume as directed on the hair dye instructions.

  • For subtle dark brown. I would dye your hair with cooler brown using 30 volume as the base for all over color. I would then buy a second package of cooler brown and use 40 volume for the highlight color. Keep an eye on your hair when using 40 volume so that you can avoid any damage to your hair.

  • she loves touching her hair haha

  • hi! if my hair is naturally black and i want to achieve a nice chocolate deep brown. what do you suggest? thanks :)

  • If you are looking for a nice neutral chocolate brown I would suggest loreal hicolor in cooler brown. But if you are looking for more of a hershey brown that has a bit of red I would suggest using loreal feria chocolate cherry.

  • my hair is naturally black. or dark dark dark brown lol its basically black. lol soo i should get the 40 volume creme developer then? kuz i want to dye all of my hair burgundy. and i've tried loreal feria burgundy and it just shows in the sun but still looks black :/

  • I am not a pro colorist and can only speak from my experience and I found that 40 volume creme developer has worked well in lifting my hair to a lighter shade for applying hair dye. Another option is to buy a blonde hair kit, which will turn your hair a rusty orange or dark rust color then apply your final hair color in this case the feria burgundy.

  • Heyy Im tryn to dye my hair a Burgundy/deep red color but i want it to actually SHOW like indoors and out but i dnt want it to be like the lil mermaid red or super burgundy but i dnt want tha color to just show in the suna nd look black. I want it to look like the color but not black. What's your advice. Oh & by the way I have dark, dark brown hair like black basically

  • You will need to lighten your hair especially using the red hicolor highlights cause its meant for highlights. You can use 40 volume developer or bleach to lighten your hair. I would just replace the 30 with 40 and process hair as normal up to an hour checking every 5 mins. If your hair is not healthy I would use loreal feria in chocolate cherry. Which is a deep burgundy brown. You may need to dye twice...hard to say since Im not sure how dark your hair is and use 40 developer.

  • Hi bettie! I just dyed my black hair a while ago with a soft brown color, but it didn't lift much. I mean, I could only see the color when I'm outside. Should I redye it again? cuz I heard it is bad for the hair, and someone also told me that I should wait for at least 2 months before I could redye. Your help will be much appreciated. Thanks!

  • You only need to wait to redye hair if your hair is dry or brittle and that is usually a month or two. If your hair is healthy you just need to wait 24 or 48 hours till you can redye. Since your hair is black you will need to lighten your hair to a medium to light brown. I was just in the same situation and I used 40 volume with cooler brown for an hour and recieved a nice medium brown hair color. There are a variety of ways to lighten your hair but I chose to use 40 developer instead of bleach.

  • Hi, your hair is so beautiful, and i just now ask you where i found the crema de coco for buy. thank you

  • when you used the magenta color, was your hair dark brown before you used it, and did it come out like the swatch?? cuz i used another type of red from HiColor and it totally just died my roots! and i really wanted a fire red color, so should i try agai, or bleach it and use it again??

  • hi, keep in mind that the hicolor red highlights are only for highlighting. if you want a true red hair color you would need to lighten your hair to a medium brown or light brown color to make it look like red hair. The lighter the hair you start with the more vibrant and red the color will show. I have used magenta on black and dark brown hair and achieved awesome red highlights in different lighting.

  • Also, if you have black to dark brown hair and you are using a hicolor that is more red/orange...it is not really going to show a significant change because when you lighten black or dark brown hair it lifts from a dark red orange to rusty orange color. I would suggest using 40 volume creme developer for the suggest time and you will see a more drastic change in color. Or use bleach to lighten to a medium/orange color if you want a dramatic red.

  • does it damage hair?? like make it dry and brittle... also how long does the color last

  • If your hair is super unhealthy and brittle it could possible damage your hair. However, I have used this product for years and redye my hair about every two months and it always comes out soft and vibrant. But I always condition my hair after each dye process. The color for me usually last till my next dye session which is every two months even with the red hicolor highlights. I also use shampoo for dyed hair to keep the color in longer.

  • would it work w/o developer?

  • I have not used this without developer. Developer is what makes the dye penetrate your hair and saturates it with color. I would assume using this without developer would either wash out the color after you rinse it during the dye process or give you a temporary color stain. But I have not tried this so I don't have a definante answer.

  • The mask is working b/c your hair is in good condition.

  • Actually my hair has been pretty dry due to continuos dying and I noticed that it helps when I use the Bumble and Bumble product right after a dye session. My hair comes out less dry and softer. But I can only speak from my experience with the product.

  • hey i have a quick question!! I naturally have medium brown hair, but always dye is darker (brown/black) Some of the other hair dyes i have had tend to fade in like 3 weeks (like revlon color silk) What brand would you suggest for a dark shade that wont fade so quickly?? Thanks for ur time:-)

  • Hi,

From my experience I've been really happy with using Loreal HiColor and Loreal Mega Browns. Except, I do also maintain my hair further with the type of shampoos I use. Make sure you are using shampoo that is meant for dyed hair other shampoos can wash out the color faster.

You can also buy tinted shampoos and shampoos for brunette hair to maintain your color. I tend to use shampoos that are meant for dyed hair and with the loreal hair dyes my color will stay in for about 3-6 months.

  • Also, I noticed when I buy hair dyes for grocery stores the color tends to fade. What I would suggest is take the color that you like (revlon color silk) and find a matching color at sally beauty supplies. For some reason my hair color tends to stay longer when I buy it from sally's.

  • okay i will deffinitely try that!!! thanks for the reply it was very helpful:-) i've never used any shampoo especially for dyed hair so i will try that!

  • Could you tell me if the product is in Europe???

  • I tried the loreal hi-lift blonde years ago and I don't recommend it. It turned orangey-gold. The reds and browns worked great but for blonde, I'd just use bleach.

  • Ah yes the classic orangey-gold syndrome. This can be fixed with toner, especially if your hair is originally black or dark brown but has to be applied right after the dye session. But the bleach method is a better process for reaching blonde.

  • hi Dollfacebettie :)

loved the video! quick question, I was thinking about using the Magenta color (I have dark brown hair). Would it turn my hair a slightly red color? I dont really want my hair to be a drastic red, I would like it to have a slightly more auburn color. Would that work?

  • Hi, this would be perfect for you. When you use these red highlights on black hair it gives it more of a over cast of red. Still keeping your hair dark and showing the red in different lighting...does that make sense? So the less light the more black will show and more light you can see the magenta or any of the red shades.

  • where can you buy this ?

  • @ahyiaa Sally Beauty Supplies they also have a website...but for some reason youtube won't let me post it just google it.

  • Hi dollface my hair is actually black and would love to do the cool brown color but what level of creme developer should i use since its that dark?

  • Hi dollface my hair is actually black and would love to do the cool brown color but what level of creme developer should i use since its that dark?

  • Well, I would always suggest using the standard 30 volume creme developer. However, if you have prior experience to dying hair and feel comfortable using a 40 creme developer, which I have used and been successful at achieving a lighter close to hair sample shade. I would use 40 for the suggested time...however I have also used it for 45mins if my hair is healthy. But if you dont want to use 40 I tend to just dye my hair twice with the same color waiting 24hours or wait till roots grow out.

  • i have the magenta red plus the creme developer..my dying technique is the same as yours..lol. thanks for the review..cant wait to try it

    joanie

  • Awesome, let me know how it turns out. I love magenta, I've used that color as well :)

  • What Should I Buy To Make My Hair LIGHT Brown? My Hair Is Dark Brown Now. Please Help!

  • Actually, I think this product will work for you the best since your hair is a dark brown. If its close to black you will have to either dye it twice or lighten it a few levels to get to a light brown. but if your hair is already a dark brown it will lift your hair 3-4 levels to either a medium or light brown. Depending on the darkness of your hair. If you have ever had blonde highlights in your hair you would have a good idea on how your hair will lift. I hoped that helped :)

  • Feria also would be my second option I like there cool medium brown. Check out there highlights too in caramel twist you can use a highlight cap and put depth into your dark brown hair with some caramel highlights :)

  • I bot everthing in the video exactly. And i have the dye on my hair right now . lol . Do you recomend doing the eyebrows.?Mine are black.

  • Hi I think that is a personal preference. I know some people do dye there eyebrows. I personally wouldnt...since eyebrows dont really grow like your hair and you never know how your eyebrows are going to react to the hair dye.

  • i did them and nothing happend... it washes out easier though cus i dont use shampoo on my brows

  • well I guess that is a good thing and your not walking around with funny eyebrows. I did a little bit of research and found that sallys beauty supplie carries a lash and brow tint in brown. Its pretty spendy though its 35.99 a box. Not sure if that is worth the effort. I would try taking a brow pencil in dark or medium brown and fill in your eyebrows sometimes that works and gives the illusion of dark brown eyebrows :)

  • Hi DollfaceBettie, I hope you get this, I have two questions: I recently dyed my dark brown hair medium brown from the Loreal Excellence Creme drugstore color, but I bought some HiColor for Dark Hair in Coolest Brown (like you) and Soft Brown. I have long hair down the middle of my back, and I wondering how much Vol 30 developer I should use per bottle and how long I should leave it in. Also, is it safe to combine Coolest Brown and Soft Brown? Thanks! BTW, your hair turned out awesome.

  • Hi, first I thought I mention if you have long hair down the middle of your back you will need two boxes per use unless you have thick long hair you may need three boxes per use. For each box of color you will need 2.5oz of 30 volume developer. Since you hair is dyed lighter than black keep in mind that it will lift the current state of you hair 3 to 4 levels depending on how light you want to go you can use the time on the box or an hour if you want to go further.

  • As far as mixing the colors since these are chemical dyes and not natural dyes like manic panic I would not suggest mixing the colors. If you want to go ahead and try it out. I would do a test strand underneath your hair so you can see what happens and if the color result is what you want. If you do this it is still 2.5oz per color for developer. Btw you are mixing a cool brown and warm brown which if it works like it should would probably turn out to a warm brown.

  • heyy! love the video! im soo happy you this! bc i just bought it today in the red. of course it will fade over time but the upkeep for this is notttt dificult bc theres no beleaching involved!! : )

so i just want to be clear i see on the box it says 1.74 oz so the ratio is 1.74-2.5?

bc im gonna do it tomorrow and dont wanna screw up!!! lol.

the other colors--the auburn and magenta really showed? bc i have black hair too

    thankss!!!!! : )

  • Hi thanks for watching my video! If your hair is black it will give your hair an overrall red tint and the more you use it the more visible the red will be overtime. You only need to measure the developer the dye is premeasured in the 1.74 tube. I also use 30 volume cream developer and leave t in for an hour.

  • I hv been dying hair black.I want light brown or brown-cherry color to light my very fair(wall white)complexion.which hair color should I use&since recently i died my hair with 30 developer, can I again use it covering my whole hair?

You also mentioned about Hicolor Deep Auburn Red,what was your color-reddish-red or dark wine brown?how does hicolor works actually, does it bleach in order to lift colors?did you ever try L'Oreal Mega Brown?I appreciate and desperately need your help.Happy New year

  • Personally I would dye it brown cherry because eventually the red will fade and turn to a brown color. I would rest your hair 24hrs before redying your hair if your hair is still healthy go ahead and redye. In the first video I used chocolate brown from loreal mega brown it was decent but was more red than brown. I then used hicolor in cooler brown which was awesome it didn't have the red tones and looked brown. Hicolor deep auburn is more of a deep red orange than a blue red.

  • Also hicolor contains lifting action that will lift dark hair 3-4 levels. It also adds color at the same time. I usually use 30 volume and leave it in for an hour. If I want it lighter I will dye it again using 30 volume and for 1 hour. It depends on what shade your trying to reach. I usually keep my base color black or dark to medium brown. If your wanting lighter you will need to bleach or use hicolor in ash brown and then apply toner.

  • thank you for detailed answer.which color can give me brown cherry?I saw Hicolor is permanent color but people over net says that it washes out with time, is it true?

  • Let me get back to you on a suggested color. But yes any red based hair dye will lose it's red vibrancy and turn to a rust color... However in my experience this brand is long lasting compared to other brands.

  • anyway to get from my dark brown-black nice dark blond or light brown? what would you recommend?

thank you so much for your help! your video rocks!!!

  • If your doing this yourself I would suggest dying your hair with hicolor highlights in ash blonde then applying a blue toner to get rid of the orange or brassy color from the dye to get a neutral dark blonde. Using a blonde dye is easier to get even color than bleach. If you can get some help in applying bleach I would use prism lights bleach in blue then use a blue toner to reach your medium to light blonde hair color. I would suggest the bleach route if you can get help applying it evenly.

  • which shade from Hicolor will give me cherry brown color? I can't find any blue nor violet toner in sally, which one did you have in mind?

  • I have been dying my hair black since 15years and now i want to be back to my natural one-med brown.I have long hair.I made the expensive highlight treatment at salon before in order not to bleach whole hair but slowly highlighted and break black.I liked it but with time the highlighted hair from brown became orange and no color would cover them ever, not even roots.recently I stripped color to reddish, applied dark blond-result dark brown with reddish?what should I do?

  • If it's a matter of removing the reddish color I would first try applying a blue or violet toner. This will neutralize and remove the red tones from your hair. But I would need to see it because it may be a light shade that it might turn your hair brown if you can send me a pic of your hair I can make further suggestions. You may have to lift your hair, tone it and dye it the shade you want. Let me know if you need further assistance a pic would help so I can see what your hair looks like.

  • which toner can you recommend for me from sally?I should use it before coloring my hair or after?

  • I recommend wella or manic panic white snow if your going for a white blonde. However I recommend talking to a sally's beauty consultant because they are the professionals and can help you find the right toner to use with your hair dye or bleach. Just keep in mind that blue toner is for the removal of dark orange or orange colors and violet is the removal of light orange to banana colors from using bleach.

  • Hi :) i'm thinking of trying the magenta. How long do these last before fading?

  • Depending on how you take care of your hair it usually last about six months before it loses it's vibrancy. Usually if you are using harsh shampoo it will fade faster. But out of all the dyes I have used this line has been the best in long lasting color. Btw...I live magenta I've dyed my hair that color for years it's one of my favorites.

  • hello! I just bought this dye and I'm planning on coloring it tonight. I was wondering how long I should leave it in for??? my hair is black (dyed) and goes alll the way down to my lower back. I really have no idea how long I'm supposed to leave it in.

  • First make sure you save your roots last once you have all your hair covered go back and do the roots. I usually get enough dye so that it's like shampooing my hair. If you have virgin black hair I would use 30 volume and leave it in for an hour. You will get a nice medium brown if you want it lighter do it again the next day for another hour.

  • can you plz plz plz do a video about dying your hair from black to a light brown plz my hair is balck and i wanna go back to the light brown color i used to have when i was little, with out dying my hair a bunch of other colors just to go back ..if you could it would help..thanks so much--MsHighschool10

  • Yes, I actually get a lot of request for this and I will be doing a video on getting light brown hair stay tuned in the next two weeks.

  • Your explanation is clear and so easy to understand ...previously I've been watching all the expertvillage "pro" and it all seemed so confusing with 10 thousand infos condensed in 2 minute video!

I appreciate your video and can't wait for the next instalments! Thanks

  • Thank you for the awesome feedback :) I'll be posting new videos in the new year. Check them out and thanks for viewing my channel. I also take suggestions for video topics so feel free to submit a topic :)

  • hi you

  • Hi, thanks for checking out my video :)

  • hey bettie, it might just be the lighting of your video, but your hair color appears to look darker than what it looks like on the website. lorealtechnique. co m/ hicolor_01.shtml I want to dye my hair a medium brown, but "cool light brown" seems too light. is your hair lighter in the sun/brighter light after dying it with coolest brown? also, do you know if there is a difference between coolest brown and soft brown? thanks a bunch :)

  • Hi, it is a bit darker on the video but it is lighter in person depending on the light. I actually dyed my hair a second time recently with the same color and achieved the color that you see on the website from the link you provided above. I left it in my hair for an hour each and used a 30vol. developer.

  • Hi, you seem really knowledgeable about this field! So I have a question. My current haircolor is near black. I would like to achieve a gingerish red color( think Kirsten Dunst in spiderman). what should I do to achieve this result?

  • Why thank you, I've been coloring my own hair since I was 12 and I have learned alot through my own experience. My suggestion to you is to lighten your hair to a medium brown or rusty orange and then apply the color you want. However, I am going to email you a suggest with some examples to make sure we are on the same page as the color you want to achieve.

  • Thanks for this video, it was very informative. I have one question. I would like a saturated burgundy color for my hair (my current hair color is nearly black). Would using one tube of the magenta color along with 30 volume developer allow me to achieve this? My hair is short (cropped with long bangs in front). Do you think one tube of color be enough? TIA

  • Yes, 1 tube will B enough. I suggest using 30 vol. developer because you can leave it longer than 40 vol...do not even try leaving it longer with 40 vol UR hair will B fried or melted. If U use any of the loreal hicolor red hilights these will give UR hair a red cast over black. If U don't want the black at all. I suggest using 40 vol with the suggested dye time. if you really want it truly saturated, bleach your hair first just enough to lighten the black to a dark to medium brown.

  • Hello, I have died my hair with Light Auburn for dark hair, with 30 developer, and it did not show up well, just on my roots, the first time, but showed up slightly better the 2nd time. Do you think if i dyed it again, with 40 developer starting from the ends, it would work better? Or should i stick with the 30, and just redye it again. Because I dont think 30 developer works enough for my black hair. But my hair now has an undertone of the light auburn.

  • Hi...I cant recall if light auburn is a hicolor highlight but I experienced the same thing any of the hicolor highlights will produce an undertone. Since you already dyed your hair twice. I would stick with the 30 developer. The kewl thing about 30 developer is that you can leave it in longer. I leave mine in from 1 to 2 hours. If you feel that you need to do the 40...I would wait about 2-3wks and then use the 40 for about 15-30mins. Do not leave it in longer or your hair will be fried.
