The source of the problem is the fiat currency/central banking system. The Federal Reserve Act created a banking cartel. They control the most important price in the economy in the interest rate (though indirectly). It's price setting. That isn't free market.

The system that we have was erected during the New Deal and Progressive eras. It's a mixed economy with corporatism and socialism.
