They didn't, this is a gameplay video from before left 4 dead was released, look at the upload date on this video "July 22, 2008" L4D was released in November 2008.

These ones seem more realistic (the new ones, I mean) The old ones made Zoey and Bill look like Rainbow six or something. The old Francis was awful and the old Louis looked like a drug dealer.
