  • One big difference in the US vs. Europe is fuel tax. In many parts of Europe, diesel is taxed at a lower rate than gasoline (essentially subsidized), resulting in it being cheaper per liter AND providing better economy vs. gas.

In the US, it is priced about enough higher to offset the efficiency benefit and emissions requirements make the initial price of diesel vehicles higher, as well. So, the difference is about government meddling in the market.

  • i fucking love its sound!!!

  • Testdrive the 335D and you'll be blown away; 286hp, 580torques, 0-60 in 6 seconds and still able to get 36mpg. Quadruple win!

  • Common Rail??

  • its not at all that we dont have diesel fuel here. but people in the US dont want to buy diesel cars. otherwise we'd have alot more to choose from than we currently do. people assume they are loud, and smelly like the trucks we are so familiar with. people also assume they are low on power. most americans are just unfamiliar. that is all. it will catch on eventually i think."

  • Agreed 100%. A lot of German companies are starting to push diesel a lot more recently. VW, BMW and Mercedes.

  • Starting? They never stopped.

  • @vanslembr cuzz thy`re wankers ! i would outrun most american CARz (CRAPZZ) in my 730d

  • @ the american unsers here:

is diesel fuel now also available in america?

nearly everyone says that in the states diesel is unknown ;-)

and please tell me about this rumour.

  • There is diesel... mostly for big trucks etc. There are some mercs, and vw tdis around, but mostly just trucks. Its used primarily for the torque in the US than it is for economy. I don't know why though... I would love to have a small diesel powered car for a second car to use as a daily driver to work and back. The best MPG in the US is from the Prius which only gets around 50, small diesels in Europe get in the upper 60's. I don't understand it...

  • It's the combustion cycle of the diesel which is more efficient. I I doubt if one could summarize it here. But in any case BMW is bringing the 335d to the States this fall. Hopefully they'll consider sending us the 1-series diesels in the near future.

  • i never see any diesels, my family owns a merc 300d a vw tdi and a ram cummins, diesels are far better than petrol cars in economy and reliability

  • i'm gonna love the 335d the 335i is already notoriously fast and high torque. if u look at the figures for that car, its putting out almost twice as much torque as hp

  • Diesel is choked off for most smaller cars... they are required to meet stricter emissions than gasoline-powered cars. Most manufacturers don't bother getting their Euro-diesel engines certified here because they can't ever make up the cost.

  • Well, the problem with diesels (the ONLY problem) is that they do emit too much Nitrogen Oxide and Nitrogen Dioxide (NOx). The Carbon emittions are already twice as good as petrol and at a rate that does not fuel "global warming" (though should be called "over abondance of Carbon Dioxide), usually between 0.8 and 1.0 lb/mile.

  • can that stuf be turned into nitrous oxide thats used to fuel some drag racers and salt flat racers(and vidoe game cars but no street cars use it)

  • ...seriously?

Of course its available in the US. It is just not usually used for small cars.

  • too bad no diesel benz or bmw in usa, Americans are allergic to diesel cars even the big monster 4 wheel drive here are not diesel, all powered by gasoline

  • There are. Not many though. I have seen several Blutec Mercs around. No diesel BMWs though, I think they are introducing one next year here. And the big 4 wheel drive trucks here are diesel, they uses cummins and powerstroke diesels. Not for economy but for the torque they achieve with diesel.

  • is the bmw 3 series diesel engine

  • They offer both. In the USA they only have the regular gas version. In Europe along with other countries they offer a diesel version, the diesels can be identified by the letter d after the number. Example, 330i is regular gas while the 330d is diesel. The i does not mean gas though, i means sedan.

  • is diesel soppesed to be faster

  • No... it just has a longer range. So at 24 hour races, gas powered gas have to fill up more often which takes time and lets the diesels get ahead.

  • with the correct charging diesel is more powerful. it even needs a less PS/HP for the same performance as a gas engine.

the VW TDI and the US cummins engines are good examples.

  • The 335d is coming state side in the Fall. I really want a 330d because it has a manual transmission.

  • i - means fuel injection

  • yea! BMW Power for you

  • I don't get it... is the point that BMW is cleaner than that truck?

  • It's not that it's cleaner... it's that BMW's diesel technology won the race, and the only other diesel powered vehicle on the track, was the maintenance truck.

  • Oh now I hear it, "the other one took the checkered flag"

  • Its fun to see diesels in racing =) The tdi leon and bmw might starting using the diesel in wtcc too ^^,
