great song, i first heard the song in the mid 70s as a 7 yr old and then nto again till KWGN used it in a commerical advertizing Original Star Trek series airing at 10 pm m-f in the very early 90's
Steve sure likes singing about his previous songs: Space Cowboy mentions Living in the U.S.A. and Gangster of Love. The Joker mentions Space Cowboy, Gangster of Love and Enter Maurice. Trying to sell his back catalog perhaps? ;)

My dad played drums with Les Paul. On a tuesday at Fat Tuesdays he was giving me guitar advice. He kept saying "STYLE not Speed man" and "I invented the damn thing Y'know" (I knew) and "I taught little Stevie Miller to play Y'know, and look how much STYLE he gets from simple chords". You had to be there, in so many ways, when tracks like this one flooded your sky-eyed visions, powered your flights to realms inside where only the best would do. Always, along the way I'd turn at least once to Steve. Which way next?
I personally think this song is about 20 too short! This is also one of those 100mph songs, you know? You're driving along and listening to "Space Cowboy", and when the cop finally pulls you over and tickets you for driving 100mph!!!!
Yes thank you Dominator8146, Amazing music must be appreciated and must be labelled correctly. Attention people: The Joker is infact NOT Space Cowboy, that is just a joke (pun intended).
What happened to this guy anyway? Those first 4 or 5 albums were ace, especially the first 2 with Boz Scaggs. Cool song, my brother and I saw him play this at the Filmore! I think Beatle Paul plays on this album somewhere. Then Steve became a comedy act.
I've had this ditty swirling thru my head for nearly 40 years. A late friend of mine had the album, Best of, and this song immediately captured my consciousness back in 1972. I remember ooooh so well putting the vinyl in his parents' console stereo when they were out and ROCKING! It is one of my all-time favorites. Steve Miller played it at a concert I attended in 1976 at the Shiner Ranch just outside Austin. Man I wish I could remember more about that concert, but it was a head trip for me.
Right on !!! This is THE song. Its been stuck in my head for 30 some odd years. Thank you for posting this-somehow its been mislabled over the years. Thank God for You Tube
Gee, you guys leaving these comments are all so much smarter, better educated and better looking than me. I am nothing, less than nothing! I don't deserve to listen to either of the Space Cow Songs. Someone should do the world, you guys and Steve Miller (God son of Les Paul) a favor and kill me!
GREAT background song to use in a video about the 1975 major league baseball season, ESPECIALLY where the 1975 WORLD SERIES CHAMPION CINCINNATI REDS, 1975 NATIONAL LEAGUE MVP JOE MORGAN AND 1975 WORLD SERIES MVP PETE ROSE ARE CONCERNED!!!!
Reminds me of the good old days of my favorite FM album rock station. This would be an excellent song for a local band to add to their repertoire - an easy, familiar riff and sounds great!
Let me tell you, one person even had the nerve to write in annotations in his video of The Joker as "Yes, I know that the name of this song is The Joker, but when most people search Space Cowboy, they mean The Joker. That's how you found it right?"
No, that's not what I meant. I searched Space Cowboy, and I wanted damn Space Cowboy.
I can't tell you how much respect I have for you for doing it right.
Finally! Yes, this is the song my friends used to baptise me. Everytime I look for this I find The Joker - which is cool. Space Cowboy is one of the first lyrics. But this is THE song, spacey sound effects and all. Dominator, you're my new best friend.
