Patrick your mixing data recovery and data backup they are totally different things. Spinrite does not backup data but it will recover data so that it can be backup.

I had 2 sata hard drives die on me as well, and thinking about getting identical ones and replacing the circuit boards since nothing else has worked. Sucks tho, no backups to speak of.

My Seagate Barracuda SATA drive recently died after 7 years of hard work! It started smoking, one of the chips on the board fried itself. So I lost 50gb of electronic music mp3's and all the songs I was working on, it's sad really, BUT I'll have to get a clone drive and swap the actual disk sometime soon. If anyone has a spare barracuda 7200 rpm model # : ST3120026AS lying around msg me!
