who did this originally? I heard a version from the 50's that sounded like it was done by a black group with females doing the backup vocals. anyone know?
Written by Allen Toussaint under the pseudonym Naomi Neville and first recorded by Benny Spellman.Cover versions exist by The Stones (Got Live If You Want It! but overdubbed with screaming girls- the scream-free version can be found on the compilation More Hot Rocks, The Hollies, The Who(THE BEST VERSION),The Merseybeats,Strawberry Alarm Clock (recording as Thee Sixpence),and many others, including more recently the October 2007 album Raising Sand, performed by Robert Plant and Alison Krauss.
The comment by "terrymwalsh" is true. The Stones is good bu the Aussie rock band The Throb did a better version than the Stones. I first heard it on the radio in 1966 when I was a schoolboy!
THis was only played on a local stattion in Ontario California called KASK which is no longer around. Had to request it at times as I could not get enough of it!!!
Another classic track that the stupid bastards who run radio stations never play.....damn, The Who also recorded this song! What's the harm in playing this??
Don't you know we have to hear "Satisfaction" again? Radio listening is a waste of time. By the way, The Hollies also recorded it, but The Stones did it best.
This is the crappy version with the audience screams tacked onto it that the fools at US London put on The Stones' live album. This and "I've Been Loving you Too Long" were studio tracks.
It came off the "Got Live if You Want it" album. It's a studio recording with "crowd screaming" added later. All the other cuts on the album were live with the exception of this one.
i like Benny's version better

Check out the Australian band The Throb's version from back in 1966. THIS one is the best version by far, but then I'm Aussie biased!

The version without the fake audience has been widely available for nearly thirty years.

this song was gonna be a single but they withdrew it!! A few were pressed and are worth a fortune if you can get hold of one!!
