  • Wow dude u must have a faulty one because I use the heck outta mine and it still looks like new at almost 2 years. Damn! Question for u my man, do you have a weather cover for your pit? If not that maybe the reason of such bad rust and it falling apart.

  • This is the worst pit on the market, gauge of metal is way to thin, do not waste your money if you really like to BBQ

    this pit will not last

  • Pay less and get less

  • I've had mine for 3 years and use it all the time. Keep it covered when not in use and still looks GREAT... I love my Brinkman smoker.

  • Man, what part of the country do you live? Rust is primarily caused by water, and I live in the Pacific NW, and own Brinkmann products. I just cover my grills with canvas, and I have a couple rust spots on my smoker, but not like yours. And it rains 310 days a year here.

That's one reason I didn't want to invest in a Traeger, because of the weather damage might happen.

At any rate, sad to see your dollars flushed down the drain.

From one grillmaster to another. . .

  • I inherited a Brinkman that's at least a decade old. It even survived Hurricane Katrina. Even mine doesn't have rust like that!

  • I bought one at Home Depot and realized I made a mistake when I was easily able to pick up the box that it came in. The thing was a piece of garbage and started rusting after using it a few times. Had to repaint it several times the first year I had it. Got rid of it the following summer.

  • you must have bought a cheap or crappy one cuz I'm using my father's smoker pit and it's going on 15 years, no rust and no problems at all and we usually leave it out all year!!

  • Fire deteriorates metal; therefore a liner should be used in the fire box.

Most all the hardware/lumber stores carry fire brick.. Try them.

Make your liners from heavy black stove pipe.

Should extend the life of your Brinkman as well as other brands.

Like the guy below, keep after the rust and add fresh paint.

  • I have the exact same grill. It's over 4 years old and in better shape than yours. It's kept outside with no cover. I place aluminum foil inside both chambers. Wherever there is rust I take my dremel to it and then repaint every year. It's been great to me. Sorry about your issue!

  • i have an older model that ive had for 10 years still in good shape. these new ones with the clamshell design dont look like they are air tight . the older ones have fitted doors . but if you want a good cheap smoker build a uds look it up on youtube.

  • Thanks for the video, I live in Canada, and was very tempted to jump in and buy one, but will now reconsider, Cheers........

  • @keepercoach Hey no problem what so ever. Still no reply from brinkmann on a replacement grill so it was put in the trash. I fond a great grill at Lowes home improvement store. also known as the land of Jimmy johnson. LMAO Good luck,

  • @keepercoach Reconsider mine never holds temp. they suck!

  • I bought a BRINKMAN yesterday and after putting it together I realized what a piece of CRAP it was. The metal is paper thin and there is about 1/4 inch gap all the way around the lid. I never even lit a fire in it and it's going back to K-Mart TODAY. What a piece of sh!t. I bought a BRINKMAN back in the 80's and it was made of steel. The new ones are JUNK. If you have an OLD brinkman, you may have a good one but the newer ones... ARE JUNK.

  • Update: brinkmann will not even reply to the report made at the BBB. so much for standing behind the product.

  • I feel your pain!!! The paint on my firebox flaked off after the first burn!!! Im sure the rust will take over this summer (I got it in August of 2009)

  • just build u 1 out of a steel drum. it will last u forever!

  • you're clearly missing my point...

  • all of these offset smokers are crap. I have a char broil one and it's got tons of rust as well. you just have to realize that if you're gonna by the couple hundred dollar model you're not gonna get more than a couple years out of with without making some serious modifications and putting in some regular maintenance work. It is what it is.

I'm hoping to be able to step up to a Lang within a few more years...

  • @DJMackLong Ive had no problems with mine and its about a year old and used at least once a week on the firebox aide and bbqed on daily...I have re-painted the firebox once already but thats just maintinence Just saying..

  • Comment removed

  • Respond to this video... @CanuckPepperhead like I said...regular maintenance and modifications. I absolutely agree that you can get some good meat out of a cheap (charbroil/brinkmann), as I use a charbroil myself, but the fact is they're made of tin that's bolted together rusts easily and have all kinds of air gaps. I love my smoker and have had a lot of fun fixing it up and learning how to use it, but i'd never go to a competition with it.

  • @DJMackLong no its not meant for compitition but with regular maintinence and cleaning its good enough for home....

  • MADE IN CHINA NEED I SAY MORE

  • Good products don't need to be repainted or require "owner care" . There was a time not long ago when you bought a unit like this and left it outside all year round and it was excellent for a good 10 years. These companies are creating products that disintegrate faster and are less durable. It is that simple. If you want to defend that sort of corporate behavior then you are your own worst enemy.

  • @michaelckerr these days everything is built cheap its how you take care of it ..Lol like new cars if you want to compair

  • Looking at it he didnt maintain the firebox properly

  • why dont u cover it up when ur not using it u lazy bitch

  • ill show you you my daily used grill(maintained)I live in ontario and in winter this unit with my other bbqs gets a shi*kicking from the SALT they use on the roads here...They still look better than your unit...non maintained then blaiming the company....its so hard to maintain when you can let rot then blaim the company...You loose

  • I look at this this is operator error..Plain and simple the firebox will need maintience

But like other forums where I see people cry about the stuff they own..I keep coming back to this...Lets see here..you dont clean your pot..#1..#2 should be how did you let your pot get that bad???pure lazyness??? 3 In this case its not the manufactures fault..its the consumers fault...used alot and overheated a few times if not more..it rots blame the company...

  • @CanuckPepperhead get some sandpaper and clean it up and quit crying ...shit...

  • every so often I take my firebox off and re-paint it it gets hot enough where it burns the paint clear off the box.At 6 months old I had to repaint my firebox..To me a little maintinence on these barrel smokers goes a long way.....

  • you got what you payed for...caviat emptor like you said

be sure to remove all the spent charcoal after use,,,this will help

also,,,when the firebox is still warm,,,spray inside and out with PAM

I've had my New Braunfels Hondo ($124) for 10 years,,,and although rusty,,still sturdy. Brinkman and Charbroil have bought all the patents to these grills and cheapened them up so people can buy them at Home depot for $100,,,they just don't last like they used to

    buy a Klose next time..

  • Hi,

Please know that I'm not looking to start a war or words or anything like that, I'm just trying to help. I notice when you open the firebox that there are ashes in there. Did you clean them out or are those from use that day?

I ask because ashes should be cleaned out because they will attract moisture, especially in an enclosed space, and will cause rusting.

  • what a bunch of cocksuckin rip off artists!

  • hey Thorntonater, I'm sorry for you my friend but you luck out. Did you buy that @ walmart or ace hardware? They are on recall sent it back and they will replace & give you a new one. Models 805-2101-0 and 805-201-1-2 or contact Brinkmann @ 800 675-5301 to send you a new one. Good luck

  • looks like operator error to me.

  • @OvertheArcOutfitters how can that be owner error? Not trying to be a smart ass but come on. this thing has been given the best of treatment. and It does a great job. I've been called the pitmaster By some around here. Thanks for thew input. :+/

  • Just yanking your chain. Yes I've had some rust but not that bad. Then again I live in Arizona. The paint has peeled on the fire box and some rust forms in those spots. It seems to go away when I crank it up. I would try some Rust Mort and then paint over it with a good hi-temp engine paint. Far less costly than a new fire box and you can probably get a few extra years out of it.

  • @thorntonater did you let it outside in the winter or rain? if you didnt, that thing is really bad quality, but looks good, if you have a house of your own ill reccomend you to build a stone one, it is easy to make cooks great, and lasts forever.

  • WOW, I can say I have some rust on the very top of the firebox where the heat has worn the paint... but no where near the corrosion you are experiencing.

Where about do you live? Are you in the rust belt?

  • @hoshnasi I live in florida miles from the coast. Its kept on the covered porch. Just look at the end game. Asked brinkmann how much for a new firebox. !00 bucks is the cost. Im outraged!
