OK... how come majority of the posters here (or any other martial arts videos for that matter) always ask "I don't think this would work in a real street fight!!!" Do you all go out of your way looking for actual street fights? Don't even bother learning martial arts! Just go out there and find a bum and beat the crap out of him if that's what you want... sheesh!
Awesome video though! I hope I'm half as good as you guys!
I do see Silat influence. I guess there are several similarities in Indonesian and Filipino martial arts, it's just a matter of development and variations in technique.
@truheart4lyfe original kuntao is no longer existing in the Philippines. It is a kung fu of taoist priest. when taosug came to learn this art they name it as kungfu ng taosug. then it was named again as "kunsagradong Hataw" (Kuntaw) If I am wrong well I accept and hear correction.
Mailpay kaayo si Manong Sonny nga wala mamatay ang iyang Visayan Corto kadena style. It is awesome to see Sonny's art live on, I never had the chance to meet him but I've always admired how he presents the FMA. Thanks for posting this vid and i want to say kumusta to all his VCK family.
This looks like a FMA southern style influenced by the Indo-Malayo region very similar with Penchak silat but its quite more basic. very unique in its purerist form but I just wonder if this foot work would really work with real street fights with a smarter opponent I think every art has its own limitation and strength. every style has its own purpose and application as well as its weakness
amazing coming across this stlye of kali.i've been playing capoeria de angola for many years and see a great deal of resemblance between this footwork and that of the ginja. i'll definately research the history of kali (and this style), maybe find some connection between africa and the phillipines via the slave trades or otherwise. in any case kali and capoeira de angola are quite complimentary. also, maculele is a machete game played in capoeria regional with very similiar strikes.
Historically, the art of Arnis-it's the common term for the Filipino martial art (Escrima-Visayas region Kali-Mindanao region)has been practiced in the Philippines for hundreds of years. The similarity you noticed, is probably due to the fact that all human beings share similar traits (2 arms and 2 legs LOL!), which means that there's bound to be some similarities. Some Kali styles look like a combination of Tae Kwon Do and Capoeira.
If you look up Negros Oriental on wikipedia, you will find a picture link under mindanao and click negrito. It's true the negrito, is where Kali came from in the Visayans. Look up Moro's and you find they are blacks from Africa. Han Chinese, Main articles: Xia Dynasty, Shang Dynasty, and Zhou Dynasty, which Bruce Lee came from are descendants from same lineage.
Has anyone ever mentioned that this looks a hell of a lot like Capoeira Angola? I know that some have suggested that the Moro style might have some African roots, but I also know that the 'scholarly' view refutes this. Any thoughts?
Actually, the 'Ginga', Capoeira's footwork is a triangle. There are many similarites between Capoeira Angola and FMA. Rhythm focused, flowing, redirecting, and deceiving.
The roda is beautiful ritual, a game. As is Carenza.
Outstanding footwork is right! I realize this is just a drill, but it is just the type of drill that would add miles to your footwork, and your standing-grappling game.
This is some cool stuff, question for people who know fma. What style of dance do you recommend to compliment Filipino martial arts?

Good stuff! I've seen other posts that have watered-down karate-like moves. Thanks for sharing.

Definitely admire the footwork. Southeastern martial arts are the most fascinating to me.

Firstly, fantastic footwork. I've just found a local instructor who teaches Filipino boxing and
Escrima. Hopefully, it will live up to what I've seen here!
Secondly, can someone tell me what the music was on this clip? It sounds like Gwen Stefani..

the reason that Capoeira and Kali look similar is because they were both disguised as dance during Brazilian and Filipino colonial rule.

@willw00ds I think you mean spanish/portuguese rule. The Portuguese ruled Brazil. The spanish conquered the Philipines

capoeira's footworks are mostly circular while these still follows the trangle principle.
