I think a slower than usual tempo compliments this peice but not this slow. Musically it was pretty good but the last minute spoiled it for me, the gestures were extremley unneccecary and embarassing to watch. Too many musicians detract from the expression of their performance by putting effot into making a 'come face' and not their hands, especially guitarists and pianists.
After listening to Kissin's, it's such a relief. She mostly plays it, doesn't hammer it. It is not a compliment, though. Some chords that need to be emphasized are not. Some delays that must be done, are not. At the delicate part after the strong chords, it fails to carefully create the contrast of ambiance, its remarkable sweetness. Visual presence is not music. At the end I see much movement, but not much interpretation. It deserves rather musical intensity and exaltation. For music's sake.
I love this perfomance! Yes, her playing style is a little unusual, but she is enjoying it! That's a good thing. Everyone has their own way of playing and I don't think that a pianist should inhibit his/her feelings when playing. 5 stars from me. Peace, J
If you want to hear it played wonderfully, go and find an early recording of Alfred Brendel doing it (it is paired with Ismaley)on the Vox label. It is one of my favourite recordings ....
Maybe you are the gay, Emerson Lake and Palmer version is a masterpiece of rock adaptation of a classical masterpiece.
Also all the members of ELP have knowledge about classical music (it's very common in European countries), that why they made a very fine adaptation of Mussorgsky's Pitcures At An Exhibition.
I've heard 1st the ELP version, then I've heard the Mussorgsky original, and I really liked both styles.
If you don't like that version it's because you know nothing about good music.
It's refreshing to hear this on a piano; it seems that too many composers of more modest (no reference to Mussorgski intended) talents will stretch every nerve to come up with an arrangement for orchestra or rock band or kazoo ensemble that is in every way inferior to the original.
I like your interpretation very much! I performed the Great Gate yesterday at a house concert. It's so fun to play once it's in your fingers. When I figure out how to work my new video camera, I'll post my rendition.
her bell-like tone and enthusiasm are unfailing. i must say, i like horowitz's transcription of this - it amplifies the composer's meaning well and brings it more into idiomatic piano writing - but that's nothing to do with the interpreter here! i'd love to hear here in the horowitz version.
it s so nice to watch a pianist with enthusiasm and not somebody who s just doing it as a chore.Basically she s better than many who have a big ger name.THough Im sure she is marketed well.
She really is great! When it comes to the last movement (great city of kiev) she is so expressive and strong in her playing. Kazjooster could you send me a video of Elena Kuschnerova playing all of the Pictures at an Exhibition. My email address is bigfatcake@hotmail.co.uk. If you could then that would be great. Thanks
I love this video. I am trying to play this now and with I had 1/1000 of this persons talent

What was she doing throwing her arms above her head at the end?? That's one of the strangest piano performances Ive ever seen
Jamesdude2000 2 years ago
It does seem like she is taking the attention away form the music and onto herself a little too much...:S
jannokas85 2 years ago
She gets credit for playing the damn thing.
Best ever performance, Barry Douglass @
1986 Tchaikovsky Comp. It was truly an
amazing perf. Watch excerpts on U-tube.
Kissin is also fabulous on this piece. Just
my opinion of course.

Good, but not at all interesting. I've just lost over 9 minutes of my life listening to this so very dull interpretation.

Hooooooooooooly crap. Look at her hands turn into a blur after 2:00. That is just plain scary. Respect for her (and any pianist who does this piece)!
