I love Sonny Boy and has for 49 years since I first heard and saw him on the danish telly sitting in the gutter in Copenhagen playing his blues - .... me mum looked at me and said - I'm worried about what man you are gonna merry some day ... hehe I was 9 - and had totally black eyes - I will always love hime and his spirit ♥
it took me far too long to realise it was just realise it was just him and a harmonica... this man is a talent beyond the comprehension of mere mortals... AND HIS HANDS!
There is no better then nor now. He continues to inspire musicians of all stripes. To the person inquiring as to the key: he is playing a low D. I've also seen videos where he plays this tune on a low E harp.
to the 'dis-likers: deaf dumb and blind for sure. This video is not just a classic example of raw pure talent, it is an example of what we all (musicians) should strive for ...... to 'be' the music. Few will ever come near this gentleman, all the off-topic comments about color, slaves, etc. aside.
@FranZSax yeah especially back then in america they were still treated like slaves.some say black people have the rythm more than white.but think this, when you are poor and dont have moeny what can you freely enjoy?music singing dancing so you become good at it.you sing your pain you express your feelings you feel it.
Damn! Talk about creating a mountain with a handful of sand. Sonny does so much with so little with this number. Damn. Damn. I can't begin to imagine what america would be like without these real blacks. They didn't stop feeling despite being held down. That is the greatest victory in the face of oppression. To feel less as a consequence of being oppressed is the greatest loss.
@brydon10 I guess that makes sense. It just looked like he'd not be able to control it w/o reaching more holes. ? obviously i don't play harmonica. heheh
how do they do that with the harmonica just in the mouth. still having a hard time getting single notes with 2 hands. did u ever wonder who taught the Lilttle Walter's Sonny Terry 's Big Walter Horton ect: how can u learn all that stuff by yourself ( self tought )
@HarPlayer -it's so true....the blues man..i mean..ay real one...really can do it...me too..and..because...i'm addicted to blues....please....just listen me in a cover..i hope ...comming soon....with my voice...i am white man..but....i lived between them...and...i feel those sounds..and learned a lot from them....god bless this good music ! - anyway...i've learned to play harmonica and guitar...from 5....not bad....'ight ?
The difference between a chromatic and a diatonic is the button or slide, that makes available the half steps between each note making all 12 (or eleven depending on how you count) tones of the western scales available. A diatonic is tuned to provide the diatonic scale (7 or 8 tones depending on how you count). A skilled played can derive some, if not all (depending on whether or not one can overblow and overdraw) of the missing notes on a diatonic harp. There are 12 and 14 hole diatonics.
@WTJoyce45 -hey man..it's also depending of the type of the harmonica..., the lenght of the fingers...the musical ear, also talent..and...not in last place....the...FEELING for blues....
@dragontooth81 -wonderful remark...only a good musician on harp know the difference...it is about inspire and expire exercise...and..it is really hard to master...professional...but...it is possible , evan by you...it's so easy...
@sonnyboywalter The best I've heard him play this piece. He seems 'straighter' and doesn't make a mess of improvising the tune. This was the first version I heard. I was instantly transfixed. It's just one of those unexplainable songs: 'feel' to the fullest. The real deal. This video is priceless and the boom camera makes it seem like the viewer is a bird settling on a branch to check out the new kid in town. I met Dizzy Gillespie similarly in '83. Equal awe. I was 9 months old when Sonny died.
I keep coming back to this one again and again. Just a masterful piece of work containing only what is necessary and nothing more. The true mantra of the blues at work. A lot of recent comments on the key of the harmonica. From what I've been able to see it is a HOHNER ECHO VAMPER 12 Hole Diatonic Harmonica in they key of LOW C. By the way, don't try this one if you're not an excellent tongue blocker. If you can't tongue block, try Sonny Terry, he never tongue blocked. Enjoy!
After al the stereo, electronic, digital, dolby surround 2d, 3d, 4d,3way, 4way 5way, subwoofer etc etc etc. At the end you will come to the conclusion; It is THIS man showing us lady gaga's way of; oohI'mthegreatestmusicianoftheworldwannabe. what music is all about. All he needed is a harmonica a mic and 2 min. and 41 sec. REAL music these days is hard to find. Name 1 artist/group who are famous at this time, that come close to this. You won't find it.
@Winterstick549 Yes even with YouTube's annoying habit of blocking tracks, I could never afford to buy half the stuff I listen to on YouTube. If we could just keep the stupids from downloading, tracks would stay around longer. I think that's when things get stroppy is when too many people download a track. Its silly because you can access YouTube through smart phones now. You don't need to bootleg a track. It ruins it for the rest of us.
i love his technique of playing the harmonica at 2:07, it a cool one, fun to experiment with to, and i think hes playing the Hohner 14 hole Marine Band, lower octave, 365, not the 364. its pritty much the same instrument, but the 365 has 3 more holes added on before the 1st one on a regular key of c diatonic and 1 after the 10th hole on a regular, as where the 12 hole i thing has 1 added to the beginning and one added at the end, but both they are both good sounding instruments.
@jesse42224 You sure about that being a 14 holer? I can make it sound the same way with a Bb 10 holer, I think. But will check it out if you're sure, because...WOW!
@SonicLizzz yeah im pretty sure its a 14 hole, for one it looks to big to be a 10 hole, at least to me, and ive done some research and every site has said it a 14 holer, its called a hohner lower octave marine band, i just dont know whether it is in the key of c one or g one. oh btw this is my new account name thing
@manandhisharmonica It may be a 10 0r 14 as you said due to its size appearance, but entitled to my opinion, it's a 10 hole as to what I've learned. And yes, I know for a fact this is in the key of C.
This harmonica in "C" was used on occasion by Sonny Boy Williamson II on tunes like "Bye Bye Bird" and others. We like it a lot for practicing scales and bending. It's like jogging with ankle weights on, it helps increase your power and endurance. It also makes a great rhythm instrument when jamming with another player using a standard key of "C" harmonica.
