@ahsl I agree there are a handful of scores that move me to tears, one is To kill a Mockinbird, another Schinder's List and the next is Born on the fourth of July, and the Majority of these scores Have been done by John Williams to Me he should of got a OSCAR for this. @FreedomFighterReturn Let's talk about corrupt you moslem POS___ Your filthy way of government in that sandbox you call a country is most corrupt and foul. The Iraq war is going down as a victory so far( i was against it) Afganistan will be seen.., but we will do whatever it takes, including taking your oil maybe. @AFinleyProductions i think its because there's such a great patriotic atmosphere throughout the whole movie. Now patriotic does not always mean "pro-war", it can mean anything wherever it's directed to but that might be a main reason.

the most beautiful and meaning films about Vietnam War. patriotism, struggle, enduring the lies, and the unbearable agony of overcoming the inconvenient truth
Vietnam War forever shattered "good government" .. same struggle is happening today except the people are no longer as prosperous and no longer as free as they used to be.
maybe fluoride and putting Prozac into our water, and getting everyone slaving their limited and precious lifespan to pay for a plastic card got the best of us.

I am a casino dealer in Vegas and Ron Kovic was on my game a few days ago along with his wife. We talked about John Williams and this soundtrack and Ron rolled his eyes and raised his hands and said what an amazing songwriter John Williams is. Though we differ politically, I told Mr. Kovic he is a great American. A true patriot.
Hmm, well, there is a similar chord change (in this case A to Dm) with the melody making the transition more suspenseful, but that's as far as it goes.
I got to work on this film & it's amazing how when the music is in the cut it gives the action so much depth. On set you get the feeling of what it was to be there, but it's funny how the music gives it human emotion.
I agree; my favorites of his are the end credits of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and Scherzo for Motorcycle and Orchestra, but this is definitely high up there for me.
OMG! The music's so touching! I'm really emotional right now! If you'll just excuse me, I have to get some tissues. My nose is dripping of snot like crazy and my eyes are burning with tears. I'll be fine now!
This is one of the best movies I have even seen, real, touching, and acutely teaches us a lesson that all life are precious and it is a crime to wage a war, to send the nations innocent and young to a senseless, useless and paralyzing war.
Great comment! I went with my mom to the theater to see this when it first came out. I was a youngster, and it scared the hell out of me! Certain scenes still stick with me til this day. However, I rate it as one of the greatest films I've had the privilege seeing...at least of my generation...
I think that this music is excellent for remembering those who have died in various wars over the years, not just Vietnam, Iraq etc. Anyway, May God bless those who gave their lives fighting for their country.
i think this is Tom Cruise's best acting. it is a solid movie about vietnam that doesn't glorify war, but shows what it really does to alot of young men during that time . everyone should read ron kovic's book born on the fourth of july. there is more to it, and its an easy read.
Another example of how a great musical score can add so much to a film. Think of how much more poignant the scene of Ron Kovic returning home to his family for the first time, following his being wounded and his recovery in the veteran's hospital, was made by John Williams' score.
This is Tom Cruise's best performance and Oliver Stone's best film, in my opinion. How in the world "Driving Miss Daisy" managed to take the Academy Award for Best Picture away from this one is still a mystery.
Born on the Fourth of July was not a complete critical success when it came out. I can remember a lot of backlash over it, especially when Stone won Director. I don't agree at all but I also dont think this was Stone's best film. JFK is better
'JFK' was a brilliant bit of film making -- the direction, the production values, the sound, the editing, the cinematography, the musical score (again by John Williams) as well as a host of outstanding performances throughout.
The big problem I have with "JFK" was that it was a complete whitewash of history. Check out Vincent Bugliosi's book "Reclaiming History" in which he excoriates Stone and the film.
"World Trade Center" came and went without much fanfare, but was very good, I thought.
The problem with World Trade Center is that Stone was trying to make a feel good, Pearl Harbor type of film instead of an actual film about 9/11. United 93 was much better. I am anxious for Stone's "Bush." I thought he did well with Nixon. Nixon was not too hard on the man, it pointed out his flaws and his strengths.
I see your point of view, regarding "World Trade Center", Gilch30, but I'll disagree to the extent that I thought one of the reasons it worked was that it WAS apolitical. Stone wanted to make a document which showed that, despite the horror of 9/11 and the political legacy it spawned, it also taught us a lesson in the simple character and courage of many 'ordinary' people that day that should not be forgotten amidst the politics. In that sense, it was relevant.
I, too, thought Stone's "Nixon" was a very underrated effort. It made him out to be a tragic figure -- pointing out the crusging poverty and family tragedies of his youth. Joan Allen was superb as Pat Nixon. David Hyde-Pierce had a nice turn, I thought, as John Dean.
Unfortunately, the film was sunk before it had a chance after Nixon biographer Stephen Ambrose criticized it.
BORN ON THE FOURTH OF JULY is one of the greatest films I've ever seen. Directed By Oliver Stone (who brought use Platoon, Wall Street, JFK, Natural Born Killers, Salvador) this film is one of his best. Tom Cruise's performance is just fantastic, I've never seen him play a role like this before.
Tom Cruise's performances can be brilliant when he is playing people that have flaws. He was amazing in this, Jerry Maguire and Magnolia. I would not have given him the Oscar for this because Daniel Day-Lewis won and he deserved the Oscar. Cruise should have won for Maguire and Magnolia though
Powerful, deep. A magnificient combination of love, tragedy and heroism. I have been carrying part of it in my head ever since the first time heard it.
I don´t know. I LOVE this theme! It doesn´t fit the the film at all. It´s sentimental in its core and that´s what the film´s not, and I don´t know how Oliver Stone got to someone like John Williams (to me, they´re opposite personatlities). But I´m glad it´s been written, recorded and finally used for this/a film.
John williams has composed on 3 oliver stone films, 4th july, JFK, and Nixon. All 3 scores IMO were excellent esp JFK, because it really made the conspiracy scenes intense.
Agreed. At least someone released an unofficial expanded version of this one; I'm still hoping Universal Music might release an expanded version of "Always." Both of these albums only had at best 30 minutes of John Williams music when they were originally released.
BTW, has anyone seen the official music video for this? I couldn't believe it myself.
This makes me shutter, and my back freezes up. There are no words to describe this composition. I bow before John Williams' greatness.

The colosal human tragedy of 9/11 had to be addressed first. Oliver Stone saluted the ordinary people who were affected by the events of that day.
With that done, he is free to address the deeper issues of it without being seen as insensitive.
I certainly want to see his take on those issues.
