Are there any people here who play that are willing to teach me how? I understand the basics of the game, but I'd like to learn about how certain land-types work in certain situations, good strategies, which boosters or starter decks to buy, etc.
I used to play Magic a long time ago, maybe in '98, but I had no grasp of strategy. Now, all of my cards are gone.
Playing Magic the Gathering doesn't mean that your a virgin, or your a nerd. People play Solitaire. That's a Card game, so is Magic. its a VERY strategic game, if you'd try playing a person who's been playing it for quite a while, you'd realize this.

World Championships - 45k, Pro Tour - 40k, Grand Prix - 3.5k, National Championship - ~1k, PTQ - Invitation to Pro Tour. There aren't enough events to say "People can win 40k by getting first place each week." Most of the time, weekend events give out a prize proportional to the cash pool which is few hundred dollars most of the time.

I happen to spend every ounce of my energy into the things or hobbies that I enjoy and try to be the very best that I can be, whether it is Magic, or Hockey or drums and guitar, or computer gaming or anything else. Why aren't the contestants allowed to talk to each other? There's no smack talking, no shit, no cutting each other low. Seems unnecessarily quiet doesn't it. Would be much more fun to have the announcers shut up and let the players provide the commentary.:)
To randomize your deck more. Instead of getting mana-boned or drawing a hand made entirely of land, shuffling more makes the deck more random and less predictable.

i have a 40 card deck when i was in high school...my friend called it "killer combo deck' coz it can go head on with a complete deck :D i sold some of the cards and the only cards that remain are the exalted dragon,painful memories,cop's,nightstalker ant isanshade(im not sure of my spelling XD )
its worth like $70, in my opnion you should still make the vampire deck becouse its real cheap and effective the deck where jace fits in isnt cheap and control takes some skill to handel imo

eldrazi elves are only expensive due to garruk and nissa. there easily defeated by control or even vampires. t2 sounds more like it. although it does depend on the meta. might be different where you play but most places have better decks showing up to tourneys
well, i owned eldrazi green, was pretty certain eldrazi elves were almost similar. could be wrong. and it did ok i suppose, but never won anything with them. grixis control, vamps, jund (any brew) and now naya lightsaber have been the winners around my homestead. like i said though it all depends on the meta your in. if it does well for you then by all means keep on winning ^_^ just saying for most ppl there are better selections.
ahh well Mr anderson the man behind the whole thing ran his deck with fogs... I follow his deck and not the deck he wife used and if you know what times to use the cards i will most definatley crush most decks the only problem is naya like always

in no way shape or form is $30,000 dollars a year more money than someone who pratices law. The absolute minumum someone would make according to Payscale would be a family laywer who starts at about $50,000. Dont speak out your ass please.

40 commons will cost you about $8 to $10 dollars. An official started deck might cost you about $10. They suck. A real deck that has a vague chance of winning a local type 2 tournament will likely cost you about $80-$120. This should "fill you in" pretty well.
are swamp decks pointless when you get to this skill level? i've always thought they were pretty good against forest. but they weren't used in the finals of 2008 or 2009

of course they dominate, they're cheaper than elves. and i dont thuink they're than uncommon, as everyon who plays magic in my school has a sliver deck....

it's not a killer combo deck, because a 40 card deck is a lot quicker than a standard deck. 40 cards are mostly used as draft decks.

alright alright twista g i admit that playing magic is cool. In fact i just got a firebomber deck and it is beasty. However i think its kinda stupid to get like 30,000 to 40,000 dollars just by playing a card game. I mean seriously there are people that spend hundreds of dollars buying these rare cards to help them win but a lot of those people dont even make it past three rounds of the pro tour . I mean these guys must have honestly spent a good 100 to 300 dollars on their deck.

jumperdude do u know how much u get paid for playing magic? specially if u place well? u could easily make about $30,000 or more a year that's better than most lawyers. that 's pretty good money for just playing a card game if u ask me.

in no way shape or form is $30,000 dollars a year more money than someone who pratices law. The absolute minumum someone would make according to Payscale would be a family laywer who starts at about $50,000. Dont speak out your ass please.

30,000 a year is not about what lawyers make; maybe paralegals, but lawyers are rolling in dough, and 30,000 isn't rly that much.

you mean 300,000 dollars, muah ha ha! and i'm guessing that a good magic player, like the best in the world, could make more than $60,000 a year... there are multiple 10k tourneys and way more numerous 5k tourneys that get played in the course of a year

40 commons will cost you about $8 to $10 dollars. An official started deck might cost you about $10. They suck. A real deck that has a vague chance of winning a local type 2 tournament will likely cost you about $80-$120. This should "fill you in" pretty well.

I prefer elves to slivers as I find they can handle the metagame better today.
Slivers can pump fast as hell. One of my friends ended up provoking all of my mana-elves :<
