  • Dude!!!! I have this on DVD along with the Godzilla Movie collection!!! This is one of my favorite battles yet!!!!

  • Itching for a remake. Though, the disaster at Fukushima would prolly make it salt in an open wound.

  • i gpt a boner

  • this is possibly my favorite godzilla movie of all, i love the effects, the drugged up hippie music and dancers, the random cartoon shots that make no sense, hedorah the giant mutant tadpole, and of course godzilla and he learns to fly, its frigen awsome.

  • Still one of my favorites from the original series no matter what criticism is shown to it.

  • I'd hate for Hedorah to fly over me!

  • SAVE THE EARTH!

  • This one was always an important one to me! Possibly because it was the only one I saw on the Big-Screen! (Apart from the discouraging US installment... which should have been called, 'Giant Iguana Eats NY Meets Jurrasic Park IV!')

  • This movie used to scare the crap out of me when I was little. Ironically though, I was a huge Godzilla fan too (still am today).

  • Man, I remember watching these classic Godzilla movies on the old Creature Double Feature show on channel 56 in Boston as a kid. This movie was my favorite one.

  • ENOUGH WITH THE ALERNATE TITLES, just release it under it's real name: Godzillia vs. Hedorah. Also I think this is the film where the Showa Godzilla films really began to take a trip to crazyville

  • @snakes3425 Godzilla vs The Smog Monster was what this film was titled in the US at the time of its theatrical release and for decades after. It's no more an 'alternate title' than 'Godzilla vs. Hedorah' would be, seeing as how the name 'Godzilla' is itself an alternate name for 'Gojira'.

  • "Godzilla, man's friend"? WTF? Why is he always fcking up Tokyo then!?

  • @somethinglacking1 It was the for the first 4 movie until Ghidorah The three headed monsterthen after Terror of Mechagodzilla in Godzilla 1985 that he turned back into an destructive force!

  • hey why dont they freak out when that reactor exploseds

  • SAVE THE EARTH! SAVE THE EARTH! GODZILLA IS A TREE HUGGER IN THIS ONE!

  • "Mastodon of destruction?"

  • Awsome!

  • this monst is my favorite

  • ahh I love Hedorah ("The Smog Monster")!! :DD

  • Godzilla! Godzilla! Godzilla! Godzilla!

  • save the earth.....save the earth...save the earth...save the earth...

    everybody sing!

one of my fav movies from back in the day

  • @PorkFrog You hear a song once, maybe twice if you stay in the theater long enough, and you still remember it 40 years later. That's what I call catchy.

  • You know if Japan is always getting invaded by giant mutant monsters...maybe it's time to relocate.

  • @leandra620 agreed pretty much the godzilla movies are based around Japan funny how the NEw Godzilla that came out in the early 2000s was in a differenet are(i kind of forgot where) plus even if you watch the old Godzilla movies in english the sound is off O^O

  • i loved these movies as a kid, i mean i could sit in front of the tv for hours watching godzilla and all the other monsters. the trailers for these movies were great, they always seemed to pick the guy with the coolest or creepiest voice to do them.

  • wait if godzilla is man's friend, why is he always tearing up cities.

  • @mwells219 he's helping with a stimulus package, gives people jobs.

  • This was the hippie version of Godzilla. It was anti-pollution just like the first one was anti-nuclear. At one point the monster attacks a woodstock-like festival. The director, who would never direct another G film, filled it with dark, weird images and cartoons. He even had Godzilla flying!

  • one of the best godzilla movies ever

  • Tree hugging liberals probly jack off to this movie.

  • ha, your problably right

  • @youngbono18

    haha

  • @youngbono18 only scum sucking conservatives would try to make a POLITICAL point and justify it on a silly rubber suit monster movie clip.

  • @the60sKid

As proven by your immature comment.

    ha ha ha.

    CHECKMATE!!!

  • @youngbono18 hardly checkmate. conservatives have the notorious distinction of consistently being FIRST of putting putting their foot in their mouths by making a mountain out of mole hills on subjects that have NO bearing on the subject addressed, just like this. And are ALWAYS the FIRST to open their BIG mouths with stupid comments without thinking. Fact is you said it FIRST with NO real logical reason to say it in the first place proves my point.

  • @the60sKid

I think you mean Republicans do that... true Conservatives are the lifeblood of America, because they understand and defend the Constitution.

Republicans and Democrats are both scum, thus I am Libertarian.

  • @the60sKid what the hell does Politics have to do with a Godzilla movie?

that's like trying to relate Sesame Street with Adolf Hitler- completely rediculous.

  • GODZILLA VS BP!!!!!!! hehe

  • @RobertOhneiserFilms Godzilla VS Stay Puft Marshmellow Man better yet XDDDD

  • prehistoric sea-life has been found ALIVE (!) under the Great Barrier Reef !!!!!!!!!!!!

(and I mean primative squids that live in shells & strange unidentifiable sharks & freak jelly fish)

Yikes - human time is short...

  • this creature will soon rise from the oil waters in the Gulf.

  • @joeb1963 You're right XD The warning signs were there, but now it's too late to stop it.

  • Ah, the AIP dubbed version, wish Sony would put this version on DVD with the remastered video.

  • "Save the Earth"

  • this thing with godzilla could clean up the gulf oil !~!

  • @rockfantasysteve Then kill us all after its done eatting

  • ugh, the smog monster is so freaky

  • this is my first and fav godzilla movie i could watch a hundred times and not get bored

  • I wonder if the new Legendary Pictures Godzilla film in 2012 will take a plot line similar to this, or if the premise will still be atomic bomb testing...?

  • This was the last Godzilla movie to come around our area until Godzilla 1985.

If it wasn't for video tapes the Smog Monster would have left a terrible taste in my mouth for a lot of years.

  • at least the monster was ugly right?

  • @GladDestronger I'll agree with you there, it was ugly.

  • until monster x came along in my fandom hedorah was the ugliest kaiju ever... in my mind he held a record. its broken by monster x and kaiser ghidorah.

  • @TomatoeAssassin What about Godzilla vs. MechaGodzilla and Terror of MechaGodzilla? Those came out after this but before Godzilla 1985.

  • @Alimistar They didn't come to my part of the country. Of course it doesn't help that I lived in the middle of nowhere. For a while I thought they stopped making Godzilla movies.

  • I actually wouldn't mind seeing this film. It's been a loooooooooooong time.

  • I like this film, plus that flying scene, but of course this is the first series and this is the first movie to make godzilla a hero.

  • cool

  • Yea, But wasn't SMOG Monster originally from New Jersey?

  • Still my favorite Godzilla movie of all time!

  • I remember enjoying this film as a kid, I think i enjoyed all of the Godzilla films from the 50's threw the 1980's. It was a great time to be a kid... I remembeWith 28 films.. i think the first Godzilla film i saw was ''Godzilla vs Biollante'' and from then on i was hooked...

This film while heavily flawed, is still entertaining. Very weird and Godzilla flying isnt half as bad as his dance in monster zero and the ''Jump kick'' in Godzilla vs megalon. I hate jet jagar or whatever.

  • I really liked this movie... until the flying scene. That killed it, which made me feel it didn't count in the series. If it did, it would ruin it for me. Besides, the head of Toho (or something) actually tried to pull it from theaters after he saw it, as he felt it made a mockery of the Godzilla character. I was happy with this conclusion... until I saw him in Final Wars....

  • This movie is so brilliantly unique and original. It is incredibly underrated and truly a cult classic. In one moment it seems to be a kid-friendly movie with silly music and animated scenes however in another moment kittens are covered with slime, and humans horrifically vaporized.Strange, yes. Godzilla's flying methods, laughable, but a true gem this movie is.

  • I found this movie to kind of weird since it had weird animated sences showing the smog monster eating smog, people like figures being poisoned and some other crap. Frankly that was all unnessasry since the movie explained it all for it's self.

  • I enjoy this film as much as any of the original series. I think that "Godzilla vs. Gigan" (1972) is the only one that is a bit slow. Its also a shame that you can no longer get these original american releases on video. The new DVDs of Son of Godzilla and Godzilla vs. Hedorah are awful. The dubbing is really bad. AIP's "Smog Monster was better and had the english "Save the Earth" song. The dubbing on the"son" DVD is the pits. The girls voice is painful.

  • i think you are overcomplicating things. Minilla is simply adopted by Godzilla because he hears his ultrasonic cry for help. I think that many take the title "Son of Godzilla" to literally. But Minilla is definitely supposed to be the same species of mutant as Godzilla. The only difference is that Godzilla was mutated as an adult (theoretically) and Minilla is mutated in the egg. Don't dissect it, just enjoy it.

  • This one is defiantly the WEIRDEST of the series.

  • I used to see every monster movie that came out of Japan - until this movie came out. It was so awful it ruined it for me and I didn't see another monster movie until Godzilla 1985.

    *

  • best god zilla film ever i want to the cinema wen i was little and watch it film, i found a great monster battle, and it has remade with me, i got it on 3pack video but i wud love it on. dvd,

    great movie

  • so the smog monster kills everyone on his path???

  • this movie was bizzarely awesome. one of my favorites.

  • there is this one really old movie called monster, and the monster is retarted!

  • Your wrong. Godzilla vs the Smog Monster A.K.A. Godzilla vs Hedorah, came in theaters in 1964. In 1972, Godzilla's Revenge came to DVD.

  • in the 70's there was no DVD in 64 came godzilla vs mothra

  • I saw it in 1972 in an american theater

  • What motivated Godzilla to turn good-guy in this flick?

  • godzilla has been good guy in a bunch of his old movies he just sometimes is bad

  • Yeah, but WHEN and WHY is he sometimes bad? Does he just have an occasional bad week and start tearing up Tokyo? I'd like to know his agenda when he's good, and his agenda when he's bad, please.

  • he's bad in Godzilla vs King Kong, but i'm sure he did just have a bad week, and he was also bad at the beginning of Godzilla vs the sea monster but that was because he had been frozen in a cave for years and they flash thawed him, that would piss me off for a while

  • Indeed. It would piss me off too. My point is that Godzilla is a murderer who keeps getting a second chance. Is this the case? Why doesn't he just declare his intentions for good or evil? He has both killed people and saved people, and it isn't clear why he does what he does, or what changes in his character from movie to movie. Clearly the Smog Monster is unambiguously evil, but Godzilla is very hard to pin down, one way or the other.

  • remember he's not human he probably doesn't understand why humans sometimes do wrong things so he uses force to stop them and get them to focus on dealing with him not themselves, and when other monsters attack he aids humanity and probably hopes to use his help to stop humanity's fight against itself

  • Does that mean Godzilla never killed innocent human beings? Hard to believe.

  • it all depends on how one defines innocent

  • Well, I just watched the trailer for DESTROY ALL MONSTERS, and it seems that Godzilla is tearing up a city pretty completely, without regard for whom he might be killing. One must assume that there are women and children being crushed by God-baby. So how do we rationalize this indiscriminate slaughter? I simply cannot understand why the narrator of the SMOG MONSTER trailer can refer to God-baby as "man's friend," considering what he does in DESTROY ALL MONSTERS.

  • this was before DESTROY ALL MONSTER'S he was still considered man's friend, but you do have a valid point

  • goback3spaces, in Destroy All Monsters Godzilla was controlled by aliens or something. Destroying a city was not the monsters intent. I only like evil Gojira anyway...

  • Okay, so the God-dude gets a reprieve in this case. Are other cases of murder and mayhem as easily explained away?

  • the first three Godzilla movies portray him as evil; I believe it was only after he had a son that he became a friend to mankind

  • A-ha! A new wrinkle in the argument. I want to hear more about this paternity issue enabling God-guy to discover his love for humanity. Some lineage questions: who (what) is the mother and what is the name of the son?

  • Godzilla was never a "friend"; but his son or daughter or watever da fuck Minillia or did, having grown up with humans. Godzilla only killed monsters with other earth monsters because they were threatening him (which also threatens humanity).

Also, humans aided Godzilla and getting rid of alien monsters that tried to control/kill Godzilla.

Dunno who the mom is (though accordin to the US Godzilla, he can produce asexually)

  • I'm beginning to think that these questions I've been asking, questions regarding God-dude's morality or amorality, motivations, lineage, agenda, likes and dislikes, will never be adequately answered. There's just no explanation for all the inconsistencies, except to say that a small cartel of Japanese film tycoons are trying to figure out the best way to clean up at the box office, and deploy God-spike accordingly.

  • it is a movie.....

  • That was Zilla, actually. Oh, and Minilla is a boy.

  • I think I know: some time around before Godzilla '54 was mutated, he had a mate, they had an egg, the bomb hit, the mate died, godzilla '54 was mutated, the embryo was mutated(hence why Minilla looks so weird), the egg and embryo survived somehow, godzilla '54 buried it for safety, the Kamacuras found it, Minilla hatched, the new godzilla found it, adopted Minilla instictivly and morally, and there you have it. Although this is just my PERSONAL opinion, but it could have went like that.

  • Okay, I'm willing to believe all of that. But there still is something of a disconnect between the two subjects: God-guy can be a good father to Minilla, but that doesn't necessarily mean he's a friend to humanity. We need to delve into the connection between God-spike's care for Minilla and his ambiguous attitude toward humanity.

  • i think its just the old ones, i havent seen all of them but i think they just had him as a bad guy until he got really popular

  • A-ha! So what you're saying is: once the God-dude started winning fans among the very people he was murdering, he decided to STOP murdering them, and become their friend. This transition seems not to have been covered or even acknowledged by the movies. Because of this fickleness in his character, it sounds to me like God-baby ain't nothing more than a big ol' fire-breathing bully.

  • lol i guess so, i was just thinking that it was marketing and stuff you know or i just figured that he came to understand the people or something, who knows

  • I spent over 10 years looking for it to complete my collection. Sony put it on DVD a couple years ago. Its a good transfer. Widescreen, Original japanese with english dubtitles, And original english dub. Not bad fro $14.99 at best buy. If you need it really bad, I would suggest getting it. But if you wait Classic Media should bring out their kickass version. It has both versions the Original Japanese and the english version on the same DVD. Its up to you.

  • I'm trying to get this movie man it's hard to find now I used to have it on VHS man time flies.
