I'm only a sophomore in high school and I went to all these summer programs where we stayed in the dorms and it wasn't that awkward because we all had some common ground. They were like journalism and photography programs. And I would take out my keyboard and start playing and one the girls was just like a total bitch about it. Going away to school and living in residence is awesome!im currently going into my 4th year and lived in res for 3 year, 2 of which is was an ra. the easily way i can explain the ra job is babysitters for older kids- they plan events for your floor, their someone you can talk to and turn to for help, and depending on the school they are "on call" at night and make sure students arent breaking rules all over the place. best advice i can give is have fun, get involved and be friendly!

Some schools don't let you have people sleep over. I went to Texas Tech and their dorms let you vote on whether or not people could sleep over or you would vote on visiting times. Also the issue with your roommate screwing her boyfriend, a lot of dorms have roommate agreements that RA's make you fill out in the beginning so that really helps you and your roommate setup rules without it being awkward and it helps you set rules for things you don't always think of.

At my university, there are certain visiting hours which you can have someone of the opposite sex in your dorm, and even during those hours, you aren't allowed to close the doors. Not everyone follows the rule, but if you get caught then you get written up, but I live at home so unless I visit a friend then it's not an issue.
