  • Thank you for teaching us.

  • if you don't have a filter in a survival situation, would it would be okay to drink just boiled water?

  • @TheRachel3131 Usually, but you can make filters fairly easily in most environments. Sand and charcoal are great, but even clean straw or grass is better than nothing to filter out the smaller debris and such. Also let it sit in the sun for a while if you can. The UV rays kill many types of bacteria.

  • Dave, if you ever read an investigate/test even ONE of my posts let it be this one...

    Sawyer Water Filters

Your Aquamira will become a relic if you do...

  • Its crazy people dont even bother to learn things like this anymore :(

  • Good information.

Personally I would not be eating newts or salamanders found here in the USA since they release a toxic substance through skin so predators will avoid them. In general they are safe to handle just don't eat the little amphibians. The secreations are not really strong enough to kill a human, but can make people sick.

  • Very good vids man... Subscribed.

  • Awesome video, Dave!

Just one small complaint - your pronunciation of the word "potable"

  • Hello Dave, I've recently incorparated the "lifestraw" to my kit, I was wondering if you have a review on it. the reason I added this small filter to my kit is simply because of convenience and portability. I strongly believe that knowing how to purify your water is very important, but if you can add something like this to your kit it would just make it a little bit easier in a survival situation.

  • @1Joyeux Apology is very accepted and appreciated. I agree natural solutions should be used much more often. In fact, we use chemicals when natural and safer alternatives are available. It is all related to being force fed the illusion that we need them so the rich may get richer. I always prefer nature first whenever possible.

  • great video!! thanks for uploading

  • @1Joyeux You should google: Bisphenol A (BPA) & exposure to polycarbonate plastic, common in bottles (including baby bottles). The amount of BPA released is based liquid's temperature. There is no question, it has been scientifically confirmed. Unless one is able to put together a Tesla Coil, one is unlikely to be able to approach near perfect water purification.

I do see your point about the air pollutants from boiling. It's probably safe to say that the best way depends on ones resources.

  • Hey Dave. I was wondering about a method of water purification that I've seen on the internet. It's where you dig a hole near the water and drink the water that comes up in the hole. Is that completely safe?

  • Liam Neeson, is that you?

  • Hey Dave cool to see here some more than Survival duo :)

you have Survival Skills.. !!! youre not the Fake Jump-around Gryllz

  • @BloKK187 You got that right! This "Bear" joker is more of an actor and a stuntman than a survivalist. The guy from man woman vrs wild is real too. If a TRUE survivalist thinks something's too dangerous, they avoid it. Grylls looks for danger even when a safer alternative is obvious. My husband thinks he has a death wish. I think he just stupid.

  • @littleladyinbigworld Yes Bear looks like he wanna Finish the Survival in besttimes... Its clear visible thats not the best Idea to survive the next days :)

Its pure show.. we all know that.

like you say: he always takes the most hardest Tracks to climb, swimm, walk.. whatever. It would be REALY Stupid to copy that for a own Survival Emergency xD

  • @littleladyinbigworld what Bear is doing is entertainment. If he does get hurt, there are people there to evacuate him. If you are in a real survival situation don't do stuff that will likely get you injured. All of these survival shows like action, Dave does some of this as well ( the attempt to get honey from a bee hive was exceptionally stupid) but sometimes even stupid stuff is instructive.

  • @lkjhz99 Perhaps, but being reckless in a survival situation in which one doesn't have an entire team on instant standby is dangerous. People see the one who calls himself "Bear" & mimics him. Perhaps it is more like survival of the fittest. The foolish get killed. Bear once drank urine when he was seriously dehydrated. THIS IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS! It will dehydrate you more. He should at least give mediocre tips instead of ones that may get someone killed. And also, Bear did the bee thing too.

  • One antiseptic that could replace the iodine would be silver colloid. If you get in trouble anyway, you can chase the bugs by drinking the silver colloid! Try that with bleach or iodine!

  • Great videos dude. Be easy; much love.

  • @DTFcutegirls yes it is,one of the best

  • @1Joyeux Ignorant Americans? How is giving multiple techniques ignorant? He left out one and that makes him ignorant? I've got news for you; SODIS does NOT remove dangerous chemicals and because of the plastic bottles required, it actually releases its own hazardous chemicals into your drinking water. It should only be used when boiling and filtering are not options in a survival situation. I would expect someone so judgmental would make sure that he/she didn't say something so "ignorant".

  • @1Joyeux SODIS method requires 1) transparent bottle, 2) a mostly clear, sunny day 3) reasonably clear water 4) 6 hours.

You can't control the sun, but you can build a fire. Boiling is more reliable and takes less time.

  • 11 people died from not purifying there water.

  • @DTFcutegirls

    yep its dave!!

  • wish i had you as a teacher all my life!!!!!

  • salamanders are poisonous were I live people get sick or die every year out here

  • @DTFcutegirls Yes

  • @DTFcutegirls yes

  • Good teacher. Like watching him on Dual Survival. Note: it is more likely pronounced POAT-able water.

  • @DTFcutegirls lol this was his job before that dumbass

  • YES, ITS THE GUY FROM DUAL SURVIVAL, STOP ASKING!

  • ok dont call me stupid but isnt this that one guy from dual survival?

  • @DTFcutegirls /facepalm

  • @DTFcutegirls yes

  • this was created b4 the show was aired or even conceived and i believe due to contractual obligations he is no longer allowed to appear in these vids

  • @DTFcutegirls

That's him, this channel is great.

  • QUESTION? SOLAR COOKERS INTERNATIONAL SAYS THAT Solar pasteurization occurs at 149 degrees. WHICH IS CORRECT 149 OR 165??

  • So long as the flame does not reach higher than the liquid inside, water can be heated inside a flammable container, such as one made of wood or plastic.

Of course, once the water reaches the melting/burning temperature of the container, this is not longer true.

  • tough stuff!

  • although expensive what about steripen uv and sawyer water purification?

  • Hey Dave

If I live by the ocean wouldn't I be able to take salt water run it through a still and distill it, won"t it be safe to drink? All I would need would be a container to boil it in with a lid modified to accept coiled tubing, another container to catch the condensation, and a heat air and fuel source to boil it.

  • @DTFcutegirls yes yes he is

  • Outstanding video. He is organized, succinct, concise, accurate, and the video is outstanding. Rare talent these days. This guy you would want with you in a survival situation. But shut up and think.

  • thanks, good video, really informative.

  • this is very helpful

  • Thanks Dave...

  • Good vid. Does Aquamira kill cysts in the water? in other words, what is the best water purification tablet or power ( like pur) that will kill everything in the water to make it safe to drink. Thanks so much for sharing.

  • looking forward to new episodes of dual survival which starts in two weeks on DMAX (german version of discovery channel)

  • Good stuff .... Very professional please keep up the good work those of us that can phathom or have had to survive with little to even nothing except a k bar and an almost empty m16 realize the importance of this type vid .... Five stars...

  • Very professional very good stuff would love to see more..... USMC??

  • What a gayboy!

  • What is your definition of high altitude vs. low or normal altitude? That would be a handy piece of information to add to my notes, as I often camp out in the mountains.

  • will a primitive bowl and hot rocks put into the bowl with water be good enough to rid it from the everything but chemicals? as long as its boiled long enough

  • DAVE:This video is a great primer for people who want to know the "whys and hows" of dealing with water. It does a good job of explaining WHY things need to be done. I pity the lazy guys who only want some 'expert' to tell them WHAT to do-- without telling them WHY. Thanks for posting this. No mention of distillation, or slow solar heating of water, but the other methods are well covered. 2 years later and I still watch this, and I knew a bit about the subject before I watched it. :-) A-1 man

  • Wow!! Its you man. Love the video also dual survival thanks your knowledge is amazing. I would love to go on survival with you man. Lol

  • Super informative. The best video out there on water purification by far.

  • are these part of the video books?

  • Thank you very much sir! Awesome video!

  • great video

  • wow i learned more from youtube than all survival shows combined

  • DAVE U THE MAN! I WANNA COME PUT MY SKILLZ TO THE TEST! :O

  • dude, love you n cody,i have evey episode of dual survival recored on dvd,i wrote down some of the survival tips in a lil notebook that i`ll keep with me in my fanny pack when i go out hunting or just trail blazing in the woods.

  • I watch man vs wild

  • @LeinadNesterbegne man vs wild is fake. Bear said on Letterman that he sleeps in a tent with the crew.

  • @TheOutdoorsman07 thats wierd, he always says on the show that he makes his own shelter and all that...dam it...

  • @LeinadNesterbegne he usually makes shelter then goes back with them.

  • @TheOutdoorsman07 Bear also says that he creates situations in order to demonstrate certain situations. It's not meant to be a documentary of him in the wild.

  • @jallenmorris1 yes but stil, he shouldnt sleep in a tent...

  • @TheOutdoorsman07 I tend to agree with you. Even though I still like what Bear does, I would REALLY love to see a true documentary of him in the wild. Did you ever watch Out of the Wild on the Discovery Channel? It seemed pretty real, but maybe not. It was good though. In the first season I didn't like that they flew in a guide to hunt for a bear, but that was required where they were.

  • @jallenmorris1 yeah i like Bear and all, thats just the only problem i have with the show. (that and he does some stupid stuff) and ive seen a few but not much, it looked pretty cool.

  • doesnt this guy host dual survival

  • @bfmvrockz1 yes

  • @bfmvrockz1 Yes its Dave Canterbury.

  • @bfmvrockz1 yeah along with cody lundin

  • nice balls.

  • It's Giardia by the by, not Girardia. Love the videos. Consider me subscribed.

  • always check to-see if three is life if not the water mite be toxic

  • Great Video Keep Up the Great Work Dave. ! ! ! !

  • 10:00 minute video can be summarized in one sentence: filter water and boill for 60 seconds.

  • Now I feel dumb for drinkin straight out of the creeks my whole life! Hell even when I worked one of the pack stations up here in the sierras are drinkin/cookin water was gravity feed to the kitchen. Thanks Dave and please tell discovery we're goin to need your show to air ten times a week!

  • how did you make the braclet you are wearing.

  • Great Video. Tip: For horribly turbid water I collect my water and add about 3 pinches of pickling alum (grocery store, spice isle) to a liter (or quart) of water and stir gently for a few minutes, then let the water settle for a 10 minutes. The alum creates "fluffy" clouds that trap the turbity and sinks to the bottom leaving crystal-clear water uptop. Decant or filter and use a chemical treatment, boil, UV, what-ever. Alum helps filters work better.

  • you can use your socks as a filter, then boil the water, and then you have drinkable water

    sorry for bad english

  • i was always told a water purifier is better then a filter

  • Has he ever made a show on surviving on the streets?

I would love to see a show like that, As the chances of everyone watching his show ending up on the streets, is more realistic.

How would he camouflage himself to sleep at night to survive the cops and the animals(human) that roam city streets at night.

How would he stay warm and fed and hidden/invisable, Lets see him do some real life stuff on the streets of different countries.

    p.s love his work.

  • 2/2 This is why you can fill a condom with water and light a lighter under it and it will not pop as long as the water temperature is below the failing temperature of the container.

  • @ejhowe2005 some bottles have a very pronounced weld seam that can eventually fail when boiling water in them. Be sure not to seal any container you boil water in because it can explode. You can boil water in lots of things besides metal as long as the flames are below the water line the container may scorch but won't burn because the water inside draws heat from the container. 1/2

  • why not just take a couple water bottles maybe 24 of em. be much easier than trying to make water clean.

  • I read that is not healthy to boil water into aluminium cup but is stainless steel the best?

  • @alraider100 Don't worry about that. There was some deadly decise where the affected ones had high concentrations of alumineumin their bodies. More science on the issue revealed that the sick people picked up alumineum and stored it in their bodies. It was not the metalthat caused the sickness. So that issue is off the chart now. But the rumor still goes along.

  • You are a wealth of information! Thanks agian for imparting all your knowledge to everyone! Greetings from Australia!

  • i bought 2 different stainless steel bottles, 2 totally different brands, from 2 totally different stores, both had instructions inside that said "not for hot beverage", are these still ok for boiling water in?

  • you are a true friend!

  • what is considered high altitude??? I live at approx 5000ft. elev. ,, is that considered high altitude???

  • water should boil at 203°F or 95°C

  • water should boil at 203°F or 95°C at that altitude

  • What about boiling in Aluminium bottle?

  • were you in military? seems like you were in marines or something :D

    gretings from Lithuania

  • whats the definitions of normal altitude, i live in florida, its not exactly the most mountainous terrain

  • Protip: Hepatitis can life for up to 7 days outside the human body.

  • Excellent video, good job!

  • perhaps someone with extensive knowledge... actually any knowledge as to how to purify water cheaply on a large basis to a third world community. I wish to attempt to construct my own purifier in my garage to present as a project at University. Not an easy task without adequate input or interest from a team of 18 year olds who don't take task seriously. If you have any information please forward to knightmatt@live.com.au. Thankyou and i hope to hear some great ideas.

  • Heres the answer for your distillation method for saltwater. Dig a hole a 1-2 feet and if you have something to line the hole with then do so. Such as game hide, etc. but not needed. Fill the hole with water and then drop hot rocks in and bring to boil. At top of the hole cover it with cloth and gather the steam in the clothing and ring it out into a container. Good primitive method for saltwater distillation. Thanks survivalschool .us

  • They can live outside the host for about 3 hours

  • According to my biology teacher, viruses, such as hepititus cannot live in water because they need a living host to live. Once they don't have a living host the virus dies and cannot revive so no need to worry about viruses. I agree with all the other stuff like bacteria in water.

  • I would like to be able to find the chart Dave spoke of...I tried on the Pathfinder webpage, just it has been too long (I guess).

  • Let me tell you something, I watched this guy on Dual Survivor and have checked out several of these videos and Dave knows his $#@%! From what I've seen...when he does take risks they are calculated (risk/reward) and he prefaces it with a disclaimer for the average person! Great job on on the videos man and on Dual Survivor...by the way, when is Season 2 filming?!?!?!

  • i watch loads of survival vids on discovery and Bear Grylls says that boiling water does nothing unless you distill it. Does that mean that boiling water still has a risk (excluding chemicals) but distilling is almost fool prooth

  • @crazyhorse3100 Boiling will kill all pathogens, but it won't rid the water of chemicals.

  • I hear you say a lot the boiling water is 100% at disinfecting. Is that mainly just in america?

  • @ChangingTides28 That should be everywhere, you're only looking to kill organisms that cause disease.

  • @FRSB01 well i travel to the amazon a lot there is some pretty funky stuff in the water there. I guess thats where the bleach would come in handy i realized. There are some viral organisms that can withstand the heat of boiling water.

  • @ChangingTides28 It couldn't hurt to use two or three different methods, I'm not an expert on the Amazon and it's always better to be safe than sorry, yet boiling is always a part of the process I use, as some organisms can withstand things that others can't, But from what I've heard, the pasturization process (which is what boiling your water is meant to achieve) will kill all pathogenic organisms.

  • hey Dave ........sounds like nearly holy water....

  • what a beautiful setting!

  • Can anyone tell me if the potable aqua tabs take care of all of these water impurities?

  • @shootingfreak no, It would be the same as using iodine or chlorine

  • I've learnt something. For solution, Filtration is not the seperating techniques which is suitable for. For example, Seawater with filtration does not make any difference. For suspension, It can be used for Filtration as it is suitable. Example, Sand and water.

  • Greetings Friend From Concrete Jungle Babylon USA

  • people know what we were actually told to do when our city had an outbreak of it in our water. and the worst part with crypto is when you have extreme diareha you drink more water only worsening your condiion.

I do love your videos and have picked up quite a few tricks, hunting big game with a sling shot is awesome. and simplistic. yet elegently thoughtout.

please keep up the good work, and yes I do realize you got what you said from CDC. but if you have a breakout, you will hear differently.

  • boil for 15mins to be sure, I had it and can tell you if you were in hostile teritory.

    Say goodbye.

if you were in a survival situation your chances would be very slim, you would need someone to get water for you. but they would probably be sick from it too, because of the water.

those pills are good for "campers/hikers....etc . but in a real survival you've got to make your own filter.

Please do not take this as any type of attack on your videos/skills etc.

I am only trying to let

  • THE BEST METHOD OVERALL IS, TO FILTER & BOIL FOR 3 MINS, IF YOU SUSPECT CRYPTOSPORIDIUM ( SORRY IF SPELLED WRONG ) YOU SHOULD BOIL FOR 15 MINS, THAT IS WHAT OUR CITY HAD TO DO WHEN WE ACTUALLY GOT IT. I CAN TELL YOU IT'S BAD.

YOU CAN MAKE A BUSH FILTER

    "GAWLETAP' ON youtube

    SHOWS YOU HOW.

    VIDEO NAME IS

    "Home made water filter"

    by gawletap

    on youtube

I hope for your sake if ever you get water that has cryptosporidium in it that you have read this and understand that if it is a need to

  • i just stumbled up on your videos and i love them, amazing and great info

  • do you know any cheap webshop for survival tools/things like knifes firestarters waterpurification things, and do you also know about a pot to cook food in that can be on open fire . (i live in sweden and we aint got so many survival stores really)

  • @Migopower The Best "FIRE STARTER, IS A "BOW DRILL KIT" even the "best" fire starter will eventually run out, but the bow drill method will always be available, pretty much anywhere you can find the wood for a fire. Once perfected it is as reliable as a book of matches.

I just looked online now and found,

    militarysupplyhouse

they claim to ship almost anywhere,

  • @Migopower you could also google

    army surplus stores

this should direct you to places, I would think to check

    RUMMAGE SALES

YOUR MILITARY SHOULD HAVE A SURPLUS STORE, SO IT SHOULD BE AVAILABLE TO YOU BEFORE EVER SOLD TO OVERSEES. TO US

    CRAIGSLIST

    EBAY

    AMAZON

    I hope this helps

  • Mr. Canterbury...I have watched more of your videos then other other humans on Earth...you are the man and I could only wish to be like you. What the World needs now is to have you run for president, win the seat in office, and train every American after birth in your class rooms before kindergarten and in every school in American there after!

  • he says you need to filter then boil? filter with what? or did i hear him wrong? someone help.

also im in the kern river area nearbakersfield, ca and was wondering if you could boil the river water and drink it....?

  • @cgm0826 I'm in Cali as well, I'm pretty sure the Kern flows through a lot of farmland, I'd invest in a Katadyn filter (I have actually) to filter out any fertilizer/pesticide. Good luck man! M

  • @mackbk718 will do bud! thanks fro the advice. my girlfriend has one kidney and a mess up like that would probably kill her..

  • @cgm0826 You are very welcome, take care.

  • Thanks for your info. What you will do if you need to filtrate salty water that is mixed with motor oil or petroleum?(example: you get stuck for weeks in a still floating ship wreck in high seas) Thanks.

  • I love your show Dual Survival!!!

  • thanks for the videos dave its somewhat comforting to know all this information for that "oh shit" situation

  • its been cool seeing you on dual survival man

  • This video is the best one for my the 3rd grade class in terms of water purifing.

  • Great vid dave! You confirmed my own research to be correct but I had no idea with the high altitude difference. Good value!

  • Dave what can you tell us about charcoal filtration?

  • dude...werent you on duel survival?!!!!! i swear i reconised you when i watched the show....

  • Thanks for the info. It's pretty confusing trying to find the right info online. E-How was saying to boil your water for ten minutes! What would you even have left to drink after that? Saw your improvised filter video as well, and will try next time I'm out. Have a good one.

  • Everytime I boil water in a fire it smells and tastes like smoke. I've tried covering it with tin foil but I think it traps the smoke inside and makes it worse. Any tips???

  • I've heard you can get water if you go by a pond or lake and go far enough inland, dig a hole till you see water in the hole, let it set till the mud/sediment and you can scoop that water to use to drink because its been filtered through the ground, now this is what i've heard but its always good to boil that water just incase.

  • should i filter the water before i boil or filter after i boil?

  • @Origin305

Using UV to sterilize water is interesting, but I would wait a few years to let the technology mature. It is also expensive, and requires batteries.

You still need to filter water if you use a steripen, as little buggers can hide in a soil particle or tiny bits of plant/animal matter. Furthermore, the UV light loses effectiveness with distance, and can be hazardous with some containers if they are too big or proportioned wrong.

  • excellent information, excellent video... my understanding (in my area) is that a naturial spring is safe to drink from as far as i've read , aperently the plants sand and soil are sposto do an excellent job at 'filtering' and clearly there would be no dead carcases in it / bactria. can you clue me in more on drinking from a spring?

  • Im a certified water treatment technician up in Canada with 20 years of experience and Ill like to say that the infos in this video are very good and accurate. Boiling for 1 minute is the safest way to disinfect water. If no boiling is possible, chlorine dioxide is the best option even though it might not kill cryptospodirium in turbid water, but is way better then nothing.

  • u seem like a really down to earth guy! i hope you get famous! ive seen some purification methods with charcoal. would you recommend this?

  • u seem to be a really down to earth guy. i hope u get famous bro!

  • Got Giardia in the AK. You do not want to ever get this.

Lost 35 lbs. . . . . Think of the worst diarrhea you've ever had for days and days and days.

  • @bigsammieking sounds like the answer to obesity lol

  • LOL it cure it by killing ya

  • just curious if you have any info on purifing with a steripen??

  • I've heard that a pressure cooker will kill and cook faster than a plain open boil.

I wonder if a light weight on a lid will be a good enough valve to build pressure enough in a regular pot or your bottle.

I'm still a fan for a clear 2or 3 litre pop bottle carried or left in the sun to kill everything with pre planning. I guess any clean and clear smaller pop bottle would be lighter & smaller though.

I still keep a water & coffee filters with my pressure cooker asstand by.

    thanks.

  • yes, because it permits higher water temperatures. You need to seal your pressure cooker with a secure stopper or clamp. There usually needs to be an over-pressure release valve to prevent the cooker from blowing the stopper or rupturing. Definitely recommended for high altitude excursions.

  • I thought distilling water was #1 and full proof.

You can impliment a distiller in the wild.

  • Distillation is better used for Salt Water Actually but the CDC says the easiest and safest method is to boil!

  • @wildernessoutfitters I woudl like to know more about distillation of salt water...it may come in handy some day.

  • @wildernessoutfitters drinking too much saltwater will kill you obviously, but how much biological deathspawn is there in salt water compared to freshwater? How would we distill in the wild with greater efficiency than a solar still?

  • @wildernessoutfitters Dave your Great man, You and Cody are the best!, your funny man, you told cody "Iam not walking around out here with wool socks and buffalo hide" LOL!!!..HAHAHA
