Can you please give a tutorial on the drums in this? They're considerably more powerful than any drum tutorials you've done. Excellent video by the way.
I dare you to make this kind of sound in Garageband. GB isn't really that bad (Well, then again it kind of is), and not everyone has money to spend on a good software.
Still, people everywhere are using Garageband to make dubsteps, and they do a good job. But the synths always sound like the 80's puked all over them.
You seem to know a LOT about making music and getting the sound you want, so please try to challenge yourself with creating something amazing in Garageband.
HOLY HELL DOG!!! Dude I just followed ur pt.1 and pt.2 tuts, saved the patches and then added them to a track I'm working on and f00k me! The quality of sound has gone up by 1000%!!! U sir, u, are a genius and if I wasn't a dude too I would kiss u on ur boy bits :0D
Hey guys .. I have a problem .. everytime I connect a new device the old one is not active .. as in there is no sound from the previous one .. for eg, when I duplicated the "Thor 1", i could hear the sound only from the new one and not from "thor 1" .. similarly when I added the subtractor, both the thors were inactive and only the subtractor sound is audible .. what am I doing wrong .. ?? please some one help..
The look-ahead means what I could name a preview of what's to come in to the Limiter/ Maximizer. And because the body of the whole synth is so reach of Mids and Highs, the will be the toughest frequencies in the range of all of them. Thus when you apply "look-ahead" function on LM/MX it will analyze the frequencies slightly different from usual straight on Limiting/ Maximization. At least that's the way I think.
hey there Dave, great upload, really really helped, but i've stumbled into a problem : i followed your instructions to the letter, but when you duplicated the combinator, i duplicated mine and it tracked everything, and connected the stereo output on the new cominator to the line mixer, but i still get no sound. Do you have any suggestions?
hey dave, first of all thanks for these tutorials! they're really helpful. I have a question, how does the subtractor produce sound by only being attached to the mixer?
@peterpaniskwl In the combi, assign all the LFO's to the same rotary, making sure they are all on the same value (4/4, 1/8, 3/16, whatevs). That should do it.
thanks for this tute. i found it a really good starting point for thick dirty sounds. FYI guys, i used this synth and combined it with the subbass dave made in his 7da prog song, and sidechained it to a real meaty kick and it sounds great as an electro synth! with heaps of automated pitch bending/arpeggiating you can get a really dynamic bass layer to a song!
hey dave, awsome tutorial. Coule you make a tutorial on the beat, including what samples you used etc? it sounds better then your other dubstep tutorial beats:)
@DanielParker01 I think it's practice, practice, practice, practice. PRAAAACTICE. Samples are only really half the work. If you have a snare in a song you like. Try and copy it as best as you can. If not, copy it when it's on a break or softer part of the song without to much mess. Record it, view the wave form, view it's frequency peaks and see where it's hitting hardest most. even subtractive-eq it your self and see where it gets it edge.
@DanielParker01 it's not just the samples used, it's how they're processed aswell. trial and error and torrent searching for dubstep samples would be the best way to learn this, as following his tutorials to the letter would give different results to the samples you use, as the each have their own compression and eq characteristics
Seing as Dave from boyinaband always does tutorials on getting phat synth and drum sample sounds I think it would be cool if he did something similar on how to get phat guitar or bass guitar tones as one of his NextUp support video thingys; displaying hints and tips on microphones used, multi-tracking, layering, EQ, compression...that sort of thing.
@KASEBROTFTW ....It's still in bad form not to explain the concept in a video aiming to be professional. Also, if you're making a video on making music, why not explain the music theory behind something, and actually further your knowledge, rather than be a fucking troglodyte that knows nothing.
@armenianzombie Pretty sure it's F natural in the key of Eb. So yes, you can, so long as it's written as been outside of the key...although, it'd make more sense to write Gb.
@jeffsolis That's what I meant, or he at least should have explained it or corrected himself, it's just really really bad form to say that from a theory standpoint, or at least fail to explain it, It's a spotless tutorial otherwise.

@armenianzombie *you can have accidentals. You shouldn't say that the piece is in a minor key without explaining that F# and Eb aren't natively in the same key, and why.
How often do you initialize the patch after creating a device? If it is most of the time, why not uncheck the "Load Default Sound in New Devices"? I also see you're using Record, but still sticking with the 14:2 mixer at the top. I've moved to having each device on its own Mix Channel, it's wonderful. Even more amazing is each drum in Kong connected to a unique Mix Channel, bliss.
Anyway, keep up the good work, you've definitely taught me more than any other source.
@glimpseimaging alot of tutorial makers do this. They know about the default INIT patches, but its easier when teaching people who dont have that selected
I'm really happy that I found you a couple of years back.. Almost sounded like I was confessing my love.. and.. I guess, in an all non-gay way - I did!
