Funny vid...theres a lots of people who watch the 10th planet videos n want to try those techniques but lack traditional knowledge to be able to apply those moves. Even eddie bravo himself was brought up in a traditional manner under Jean Jacques Machado before creating his system. Fundamentals come first!
@bertohtown41 what are you talking about lol. its still jiu jitsu. and most of those most you dont need to train a gi "in a tradtional manner" you need flexibility
@DBKK i train in both, actually i had about a year of nogi experience before i ever put on a gi. Yes most moves apply in nogi but wearing the gi and learning in a traditional manner help your game out in much more than simply applying a submission, your escapes and defense gets better, your open guard, etc. Check the results for the 2011 ADCC, which is like the nogi olympics, all the champs train mostly gi. Again this is no diss to 10thplanet this vid is aimed at the "know it all newbie"
@bertohtown41 hey i actually just re read what you wrote. i totally agree btw, you do need solid fundamentals absolutely, its funny when gracie guys use rubberguard in competition and just get owned. but like i said flexibility is huge too, that plus 10th planet fundamentals and of course traditional fundamentals help, they arent all that different.
@bertohtown41 seriously though vinny magalhaes is the best example of embracing of a gi guy embracing rubberguard and using it not only just in MMA but in the ADCC to win as well.
@DBKK like i said no diss to 10planet they got great stuff but things like the twister and rubber guard had been around before eddie he did make an awesome system out of it tho and yes they're guys, like fighters for example, that may get to a very advanced level without ever wearing a gi but ill still take a guy that trains both gi and no gi, like Vinny, over a just gi practioner anytime (+ his elbow is made of rubber or somethin :P)
@DBKK in essence. All of the above mentioned yes. One problem with many that follow 10th planet , most following via the net, dont know any bjj gi history or only concentrate on 10th. So makes sense for them not know. Many moves went out of fashion, some did not have names etc. Dont get me wrong. He has invented some stuff, changed an old move or tweeked something and given it a name where it did not have one. Always a history. Nothing comes from nothing.
@poopalover I train with the gi also, i know what your saying but to suggest that the majority of 10th stuff was used before is not true.the flex involved for a good tight crackhead vs a traditional high guard is drastic, so its very unlikely that anyone tried stuff like that before. eddie only did because he was already super flexi. Obv he didn't invent the twister, but ive heard the "it was used in brazil" argument before ive been many times and it wasn't used the way it used now in MMA andJJ.
If the instructor actually let the student know that he was referring to another system of jiu jitsu the student might not have been so confused. Maybe even saying you should check out 10th planet gyms first if thats what you want, acting like a stuck up snob only makes the instructor look like a tool.
Jiu Jitsu videos on YT are like the news, sort through the shit to find the legit stuff. This video isn't a jab at 10th Planet. It's a jab at the losers who sit in the bars in CrapOut/Assfliction gear who are at best White Belt Professors.
It's not a jab at Eddie Bravo, it's a jab at assholes we deal with everyday. A lot of Eddie's stuff is solid, but you can't learn the advance stuff without learning how to do jiu-jitsu. Guys that learn submissions from videos but can't reguard are like a buffet to real grapplers. That said, I train at American Top Team (shoutout!) and like bjjweekly and submissions101. Both are just spreading the love.
we may be able to undo all the damage you have done so far...gettin high and rollin is borderline gay, with a cheesy smile on there face. Cough .Eddie Bravo
@SakoYo My point is your a traditionalist bitch that like rolling around in his asian superhero outfit and your afraid of change because you worship the teaching of the gracies who havent tried to adapt their system since its inception and then outcast a black belt of the very art they want to spread just because he saw ways to make it better. Rubber guard works, 10th planet is the future of jiu jitsu, and your a bitch. That is my point.
Traditional moves and setups from the closed guard work just as well as, and arguably better than, the rubber guard. The problem is when people try to use the closed guard as a stalling position and do not attack from there. Most beginners stall when they are in the guard, so of course the rubber guard is going to appeal to them because it allows them to stall even more.
Really? The first form of full guard I used was the rubber guard, and I never stalled in it. Even now, I am always attacking from full guard, and find that it is my most active guard, thanks to the Rubber guard and its offensive style. But, I guess it is different for everyone.
@Dhuman571 Maybe it only works for you because the guys you train with aren't that good, and even they will eventually catch on and eventually stuff your game. If you go for the rubber guard, you pretty much are telegraphing your intention of going for the omaplata, which anyone who is experienced will see. Also any good guy will stack you in the rubber guard and will make it extremely difficult to work your stuff. So at the higher levels, the rubber guard is just a stalling position at best.
Oh, sorry. Here I thought you were misinformed on the use of the rubber guard, but it turns out, you just blindly hate it and find it a useless tool. Sorry to have wasted your time.
@Dhuman571 You haven't addressed the arguments I put forward at all. Why don't you tell me how long have you been training and what level of guys do you roll with? Making blanket statements doesn't prove anything.
yeah, people seem to get the idea that 10th Planet doesn't teach fundamentals. I've never been to any of the schools yet, but they will teach you everything you need to know. Think of it like this BJJ is an Xbox 360 game, and they release a new add on for that game called 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu...10pjj is just an addition to the jiu jitsu not an alternative.
I understand. Videos, no matter who puts them out, are a tool for the jiu jitsu practitioner, not a replacement for actual mat time. I should also point out that there are in fact many BJJ bb who also study the 10th planet system to add to their game. Further to that, not all 10th planet practitioners smoke pot but do like the system. One has to be careful speaking in generalities.
There are a number of good 10th planet students out this way that I agree, study both traditional and 10th planet to supplement their games.
None of them smoke pot.
That being said, 10th planet has a cult following of pothead, know-it-all noobs that use rubber guard as a crutch (and as a replacement to good fundamentals). Eddie Bravo, from what I can tell, would be appalled at their lack of fundamentals, something he knows well and considers important.
@allentate I don't disagree with your statement at all. Life is about moderation and understanding what works well for you. I have, on the flip side, seen this type of attitude from all walks of martial art life. When someone (or something) is in your face, it tends to get a reaction from people. In the end, I have yet to meet an instructor in the 10th Planet system that doesn't teach fundamentals to their students. That doesn't mean to say they aren't out there. Do what makes you happy.
I would agree with what you've said here and go further to say that the "10th planet" people that get on my nerves have never studied with an actual 10th planet instructor.
They get the book, watch youtube videos and lean heavily on RG without any basic knowledge of BJJ. I have no doubt that 10th planet instructors don't teach that sort of lopsided game.
Can't please everyone I guess. Choice is a wonderful thing but we think BJJ Weekly has some good stuff. Thanks for adding to the community nonetheless.
the video is directed more toward the brand new student that thinks they know everything, because of what they have watched on youtube or TV. even if they have never done one training session. not directed solely at Submissions101.
@Submissions101 Bullshit! ur site rules. Many different ways to hold a pencile, as long as its a master piece when its completed. before i even got ranked in jiu jit su,I was tapping blues and purples in a HIGH level TRADITIONAL bjj school
@NealZ31 Like I said, to each their own. I just hope our videos help get people involved or help give a trick or two along the way. Can't please everyone but I certainly appreciate the kind words.
