There's something about this video that has kept me coming back to see it again and again since the 1st time. I think it's the fact the all 4 guys really seem to be at their best. Mike is solid on drums, Tommy shines on the harmonies, even Joey comes through with a perfect bridge. The heartfelt lead vocals from Pete tie it all together, making this rendition of "Take it All" into one of the greatest live performances of all time.Listen and "let the feeling take you high".
stonegroove, it's possible that Pete Ham felt responsible for the band's artistic and financial problems because he continued to have faith in the manager who screwed them. From reading Without You: the Tragic Story of Badfinger, one gets the impression that he was a person who took a lot upon himself.
I would have loved to have seen this legendary band play live .... they were so professional and tight. Each bandmember was an accomplished and adept at his instrument. Pete had the best voice ... so melodic followed by Tom who had the sweetest voice for ballads.
Badfinger is very inspirational to me, especially right now because those guys lived & breathed for music, which I need to do. They were just brilliant.
When I was a senior in high school(1974) I remember the age for drinking was 18 and you could wear whatever you wanted to school. And the guys had very long hair.
Mine was down to my shoulders and I played football and baseball. The girls wore jeans that were so low you could almost see their pubic hair because they wore those tops that showed their belly buttons. In '72-'74 everyone had their hair cut like David Bowie.
What a Tragic story they were...as far as the Beatles influence, of course there was silly...They fuckin played w/ them... George producing......I was lucky enough to know Mike G. (mickey) These moments will be treasured, however slight they were...Clawson MI....and he married New Dehli Ellie, thanks to Tony....and now he's passed...

@AllCanadiaReject If you want to blame somebody then blame Stan Polley for ripping the band off and blame Bill Collins for being such a coward and not backing them up when the brown stuff hit the fan! Joey and Kathie are not my favourite people, he's hardly covered himself in glory over the years, but place the blame where it REALLY belongs!

This is one of my all time favorite Badfinger songs. For some reason, my top 3 favorite Pete tunes weren't written for/ about girls. Well, I think he's good I just think this beat is a little tight for a slower song. I think someone put a mike to close to his snare or something because it's really sticking out. It sounds good for the most part though. Well, I'm still a novice drummer I don't know much.

Well this was quite a happy find. Thank you raferdurham for posting it. I have to say that the guitarist is playing some of the tastiest stuff throughout this song. There definitely isn't anyone who isn't pulling his weight in this band.

Pete Ham was a great singer/songwriter. He never got his due, nor did the rest of the band. It's a shame. They really were one of the best rock bands ever, and I hope that they will be inducted into the R&R Hall of Fame. They deserve to be there.
I couldn't agree with you more. This are the people who should be inducted into the R&R Hall of Fame. But instead the want LL cool j some rap crap singer to be inducted. How ridiculous. Rap crappers should leave R&R alone. They make music real music like the BADFINGER. I urge the people concerned to induct the likes of this band into the R&R Hall of Fame. The rap crappers can start their own hall of fame just like the Bet awards.
furtherdefinitions, spot on, badfinger and perticular pete ham were a band that were so together, they were unique and so gifted they had the lot as far as a band were concerned, just a one off that we may never witness again,
I read somewhere ( I'm pretty sure in "Without You") That Pete wrote this song for Joey, because he was jealous of Pete for being chosen to play "Here Comes the SUn" with George harrison at the Concert for Bangledesh. Pete felt bad that Joey was upset (Pete also felt like he was being put up on a pedistal above the rest of the band, which he didn't want), so he wrote this for him. How sweet of him.
nezmaccaham, nice story, knowing the, kind of man pete ham was,i can well believe it,people like that are so rare and it would have been such an honour to have met him,god bless him for his contribution and the profound impact he made on me,
nez, lets face it pete was such a nice man the story is probably true, if anyone deserves a film about them its got to be pete, he still has not got the recognition he so richly deserves,
I feel the same as you nez and robharding. Pete probably didn't know how great/talented he was---who does? Would Stephen King let Hollywood bastardize his movies if he realized how amazing they were? Anyway, I appreciate Pete as you do---and this music is better to me than anything else I've listened to in life---and that's saying a lot.
nez, just to say its nice to know there is someone apart from me who really have that special gift of recognising real greatness in musical prowess, such as pete ham, he was so special, i get pissed off because i dont think pete realised he was as good as he was, and that is so un fair,
I think you are very fortunate too! What a neat time to be alive- I'll be 21 in 2012.....yea, I'm not impressed by the music that's out today. Some is good, but, you get my point.
I would've loved to be around in the 60's and 70's- Musically, amazing.
Badfinger and the Beatles are my two favorite bands- if only I could've seen them live.
nezzmaccaham, for someone so young you have a special gift, you know what music is meant to be, this music is just that, musicians are two a penny, theres only one peter ham,
Thank you so much, robharding1957. I really appreciate the comment. And I agree that there is only one Pete Ham! If only he, Tommy, and Mike were still alive.
Hey I was in my teens during the sixties and let me tell you, we got spoiled. Everything from music, sports to movies..., they were awesome. I mean classic after classic in all fields..,too much man. During that whole time I felt like if I was in a movie with a killer soundtrack! Even the comic books were awesome! You also felt good knowing the Beatles were around.
NezMaccaHam: I would've loved to have been around in the 60's and 70's too...I would've really loved to had the chance to see Badfinger--with Ham, Evans, Molland and Gibbins--live! I mean, I've seen Badfinger featuring Joey Molland live twice and he's gotten better at guitar, but it's just not the same as hearing the songs performed by the real Badfinger.
I also agree--I don't like most modern music, though I've grown quite fond of country guitarist Brad Paisley (check him out some time).
I was lucky enough to see this great band live in Atlanta Ga in 1972 with my best friend and then in 1987 I got to spend 2 hours with Joe and Mike backstage in their dressing room. Such a tragic waste of a fantastic band, but their music and legacy will live on forever.
Wow,thanks for posting raferdurham.Pete Ham was a brilliant singer and musician. The rise and fall of Badfinger is one of the saddest stories in the history of rock.Who knows what they would have achieved if things had been different, potentially as big as the Beatles.Shame that Joey is still using the BF name with a weak band-an insult to the memory of Pete,Tom,and Mike.RIP
I can do both Pete and Tom's parts in this song...but if you did Tom's part, I would gladly sing Pete's--his emotional lower tenor is always one of my favorites to sing!
This is one of the rare cases where everyone would still be blown away had they lived. d Badfinger embodies the music of my youth. Love the video---much appreciated and wonderful to see.
There's magic to this sound; it'll never be matched, nothing even close.
Pete Ham died when I was 13. I still feel the sting at 46--weird that a person you don't even know can impact that way. Tom's story is equally sad.
Not a day goes by that I don't miss what they would be creating now....
I agree with most of what you said.....but suicide, nope...I don't care how bad things get, not the way to go.
Imagine the grief the Ham's and Evans have had to deal with since then?? Not good.
On a brighter note....love this song because it isn't Top 40...its classic Badfinger with all key members doing their bits. Evans/Ham harmonies are at their best here! Another classic, just wish there was some video of the Medley's on WYWH....to share!?!!?
I have to write an essay about someone I would love to meet and have a conversation with, why, and how has this person impacted me and my values: and for a number of reasons, I chose Pete Ham- he was so amazing :o]
This video definatly helped the essay move along- you can see how great he was.
Badfinger is the most underrated band ever. Their sad and tragic story would make a fantastic movie. I don't know anything about business, but could they not have made a movie of their story because Stan Polley would get a cut somehow? Maybe "they" are waiting until the Soulless Bastard dies? What's his address?
To me this encapsulated the early seventies. The way they sounded and the way they looked. The story of Badfinger is the most tragic in the whole of rock n roll.
They were a brilliant band and inspire me to this day.
my friend and i met tom evans in a small club and talked about pete. he said after we expressed our sympathy-"tell me about it,i cut him down"-then signed an lp-"it's ten years later and at least i'm still alive" a few months later,he'd hung himself too!
Magnificent. Just before Counting Crows started recording our first album, (I was the bass player), I discovered this record, "Straight Up". I must have listened to it 1000 times in a 3 month period, from beginning to end. It changed my life and made me glad to be a musician.
What a memorable Christmas gift this was in 1972. Straight Up is fantastic start to close, and the expanded version with bonus tracks made it more amazing. The Name of the Game that was replaced on the original version is staggering, just as beautiful as We're For The Dark. This video illustrates what a powerful perfoming group they were, and underscores the senseless way they were abused by management. Stan Polly was responsible for the deaths of Pete AND Tommy.
gbj11, I have to agree Straight up is a great album. Great production, songwriting and the Album flows very well from start to finish. One of the all time favorites.
Love this song--I think my favorite off of Straight Up. Just knowing the story of the band brings tears to my eyes when listening--the way Tom and Pete harmonize so beautifully.
Yes-I love Badfinger!!! This is a great song!! I wish they would have added the organ like on the record...but it still sounded great. I still listen to their music all the time...its timeless!!
This is great. I've checked out all of your badfinger videos from this show. I've never seen any of this before. This was a treat to see these performances.
I love this band, I love this song and I love the album. This has made my day.
It's amazing to hear it in its basic form (although the hammond break that was added later is one of my favourite moments in the history of pop music!)
Pete as always sounding fantastic, so much feeling and depth. Great job by the whole band on this one. I Love the harmonies and Joey does some good guitar work on this one. Badfinger was an incredable band, watching this video gives me such a sad feeling inside.
Joey's issues could have been the face value inspiration - but what a song on LIFE in general!!

Pete Ham was a great singer/songwriter. He never got his due, nor did the rest of the band. It's a shame. They really were one of the best rock bands ever, and I hope that they will be inducted into the R&R Hall of Fame. They deserve to be there.
furtherdefinitions 2 years ago 6
I couldn't agree with you more. This are the people who should be inducted into the R&R Hall of Fame. But instead the want LL cool j some rap crap singer to be inducted. How ridiculous. Rap crappers should leave R&R alone. They make music real music like the BADFINGER. I urge the people concerned to induct the likes of this band into the R&R Hall of Fame. The rap crappers can start their own hall of fame just like the Bet awards.

furtherdefinitions, spot on, badfinger and perticular pete ham were a band that were so together, they were unique and so gifted they had the lot as far as a band were concerned, just a one off that we may never witness again,

triang so right man,im still trying to play the guitar and my hero is pete by a mile,
robharding1957 2 years ago 4
I read somewhere ( I'm pretty sure in "Without You") That Pete wrote this song for Joey, because he was jealous of Pete for being chosen to play "Here Comes the SUn" with George harrison at the Concert for Bangledesh. Pete felt bad that Joey was upset (Pete also felt like he was being put up on a pedistal above the rest of the band, which he didn't want), so he wrote this for him. How sweet of him.
RIP Pete, Tommy, and Mike.

nezmaccaham, nice story, knowing the, kind of man pete ham was,i can well believe it,people like that are so rare and it would have been such an honour to have met him,god bless him for his contribution and the profound impact he made on me,
robharding1957 2 years ago 2
nez, lets face it pete was such a nice man the story is probably true, if anyone deserves a film about them its got to be pete, he still has not got the recognition he so richly deserves,
robharding1957 2 years ago 4
This is a fine showcase of the songwriting and vocals of Pete Ham, and an excellent live performance by the band as a whole. I love this one!

This takes me back to a beautiful time in my life. I feel so fortunate to have been 21 in 69 and lived with this music. 1/1/09
iwas21in69 3 years ago 3
I think you are very fortunate too! What a neat time to be alive- I'll be 21 in 2012.....yea, I'm not impressed by the music that's out today. Some is good, but, you get my point.
I would've loved to be around in the 60's and 70's- Musically, amazing.
Badfinger and the Beatles are my two favorite bands- if only I could've seen them live.

You also felt good knowing the Beatles were around.
libraryquiet 2 years ago 4

BADFINGER RULES!!!

wakk44 3 years ago 3
Wow,thanks for posting raferdurham.Pete Ham was a brilliant singer and musician. The rise and fall of Badfinger is one of the saddest stories in the history of rock.Who knows what they would have achieved if things had been different, potentially as big as the Beatles.Shame that Joey is still using the BF name with a weak band-an insult to the memory of Pete,Tom,and Mike.RIP

As a woman, i would love to do Tom's parts on this song in Karokee (sp).....i would love it....anyone want to do Pete's parts with me??
helpmeifucann 3 years ago 2
I can do both Pete and Tom's parts in this song...but if you did Tom's part, I would gladly sing Pete's--his emotional lower tenor is always one of my favorites to sing!
truethought62 2 years ago
This is one of the rare cases where everyone would still be blown away had they lived. d Badfinger embodies the music of my youth. Love the video---much appreciated and wonderful to see.
There's magic to this sound; it'll never be matched, nothing even close.
Pete Ham died when I was 13. I still feel the sting at 46--weird that a person you don't even know can impact that way. Tom's story is equally sad.
Not a day goes by that I don't miss what they would be creating now....
triangletrilogy 3 years ago 7

Awesome video- thanks

Badfinger is the most underrated band ever. Their sad and tragic story would make a fantastic movie. I don't know anything about business, but could they not have made a movie of their story because Stan Polley would get a cut somehow? Maybe "they" are waiting until the Soulless Bastard dies? What's his address?
Benayrunyon 3 years ago 9
I couldn`t agree more.
To me this encapsulated the early seventies. The way they sounded and the way they looked. The story of Badfinger is the most tragic in the whole of rock n roll.
They were a brilliant band and inspire me to this day.

Hard to believe that Joey is the only one left.
Badfinger was a great band that was steam rolled by the business and the public's changing taste for McMusic.

Had the fortunate experience to see Badfinger twice (both times at the Ritz Theatre on Staten Island) in the early 70's. GREAT BAND!!!!
Also saw Mike Gibbins at a Beatlefest in the mid 90's(a true gentleman who recalled fondly, his days with his friends).
The Art of the Opening Track is lost these days with the advent of the CD and iPod (ability to shuffle).
"Take It All" will live on as one of the best opening tracks of all time!!!!

Are you kidding me....
I had forgotten that this was my favorite song of my life back when I was 12 or so...1973.
Although everyone was cueing up Baby Blue, Day After Day and such, (those of us who had to cue a song on a LP) I was crazy for this song.
I was driving to my sisters house about a year ago and the greatest hits c
d was in the car and when this song came on, I went crazy!!! what a song!!!
