He sent it to a radio station who was supposed to play it on their classical channel, but mistakenly ended up on their rock DJ's desk and he mistakenly played it. It became a huge hit purely by accident. The rest is history.
it's a NYLON string guitar played with what would be very crude technique for any serious CLASSICAL player....which is where the GAS comes in I suppose..as in fart. This is the sort of dumbed down piece people who hate Classical music like.

Who ever says its mason williams is misinformed. Yes he wrote this, but this is NOT the original version he recorded. This is only an acoustic guitar, most commonly known as Claptons version. Listen to Masons its definately not this version.

Who says this is Mason Williams? I know it's HIS piece, but a few have covered it, including Hank Marvin and Clapton. This IS different, in it's detail, to my in-my-head "recording" of Mason's versions - I hear a LOT of thumbnail, which is Knopflers' signature, and I hear a guy taking a more measured pace through the VERY fast parts which Mason charged through, on the several versions of his I have ever heard. I don't discount this as Knopfler. It's a very neat, toneful version.

I think this is Mason Williams. I was in high school when the orchestral version came out.
No doubt Mark could play this song "Classical Gas" just as well as Mason Williams is doing here. Mr.Williams version is completely unmistakable as his own. One of the all time great guitar classics.

This is the Mason Williams solo version of Classical Gas. Mark Knopflers' right hand style would not allow him to play this (no reflection on the fantastic Mark Knopfler, but just not in his style).

What the fuck is wrong with youtube? First i see a video where Clapton is credited as the guy playing this song, and now Knopfler! The songs name is Classical Gas and the guitarist is Mason Williams. Get it right!

Indeed, it's Mason Williams` "Classical Gas". Mark, of course, is able to play classical guitar ( see his duet with Chet Atkins), but probably this is an attempt to put him into other dimension of guitar music.

Anyone who is over 20 and has ever picked up a guitar knows that Knopfler has never recorded CG. This is Mason Williams from his album "Handmade" Warner Bros WS- 1838 released 3/10/70. His 1968 release with an orchestra won 3 grammys. This is the most broadcast, most aired, and most covered guitar solo instrumental of all time. Knopfler, though a a great guitaraist, has no association with this.

@devinstaple I don't know what you mean by that. "Classical Gas" is written and lends well to a classical guitar approach. Mark Knopfler's not a classical player.
I'm a big fan of Knopfler and I think it's fair to say he would not attempt something like this. He doesn't need to, he expresses incredibly well within the scope of his own guitar/musical style.
I think this is Mason Williams. I was in high school when the orchestral version came out.

No doubt Mark could play this song "Classical Gas" just as well as Mason Williams is doing here. Mr.Williams version is completely unmistakable as his own. One of the all time great guitar classics.

@joletinho9 This is NOT Eric Clapton. It is Mason Williams. There are a couple of videos on Youtube with this recording attributing it to Clapton, but they are 100% wrong. This is a performance and recording Mason Williams.

This is the Mason Williams solo version of Classical Gas. Mark Knopflers' right hand style would not allow him to play this (no reflection on the fantastic Mark Knopfler, but just not in his style).
