Was it John Wayne that got him in the end or that lil' david facing a goliath that could well have killed him at any time? Lee Marvin makes one evil and awesome baddy :)
This video clip is extremely well done; strategic clips from the movie (with a few others thrown in for effect---the "many young men trying to take Liberty Valance, and "falling"), infused with Gene Pitney's great song, the way it should have been.
I like your clip as much as the movie. It was good tribute to a fine film.. You've got talent. Keep up the good work
one of the best movies ever made,, and why all three did not get some big awoard is insne.. the marine marvin .. jimjmy and of course wayne.. this is one of the best movies of all time and john made it so well... like the quiet man,, unbelievable
"I'll get it Liberty!!".....WHAP!!!! It positvely kills me everytime! What a great scene! It would have been a cardinal sin if John Ford didn`t hug Strother Martin after that take! :)
Excellent video....well put together. "That's my steak Valance". I was never a big fan of the Duke...but although Lee Marvin is my all time favorite, I would have to say that Wayne was the man in this one. What can you say about Gene Pitney and the song man......those of us who grew up in the 60's can't help but be pulled back into those great times upon hearing it. "I'll get it Liberty".....wham!
@Waszma Yeah I sent that scene to some young friends ....that particular line from the restaurant scene never fails to impress people. I think this is the one time that lee Marvin upstaged Wayne by a bit, personally. How many other films did they both act in ? Both played in various WWII movies,I know that.
@justcallmeassinine How's it goin...I know of 2 others off hand, "Donavan's Reef", and "The Commancheros". BTW, when Strother Martin reaches in to grab the steak off the floor and the Dukemeister kicks him in the face....sometimes I just replay that clip over and over lol. No "failure to communicate there man. "Donavans Reef" is a really cool flick if you haven't seen it. Also directed by John Ford.
@Waszma I get you.(Cool Hand Luke) That is a successful communication if I ever saw one. Hehe ! Something about Strother's groveling and Wayne's instantaneous reaction . Almost like a cartoon! BTW I would like to put together a montage of famous western one-liners. I got an imac.It came with iMovie and iDVD.I have never used them.Want to collaberate, podner ? HEHE ? Any ideas or experience to share?
Best Burt Bacarach (sp?) and Hal David song ever written. Too bad it didn't make it into the movie. John Ford sure did know how to direct tough guys, didn't he?
didn't John Wayne whack the late unlamented Mssr. Valance from a somewhat concealed position? Anyway a great movie and a super song. VHS might be either on E-Bay or Amazon, Thank you fr the post. Great.
To Aceshigh130: Hi. All for the common good. No harm...no foul. To let the "pilgrim" tenderfoot get gunned down by the miscreant Mr. Valance; would not have bowed well with Tom Doniphon (John Wayne's character). Besides, it would have really left the story or the irony at the end of the picture, anywhere to go. The film would have kind of fell flat if Valance had killed off Jimmy Stewart's character, don't you think? Boink, that's it...roll credits. Nope. That ending would've sucked, pilgrim.
If anyone man doesn't like this fantastic movie or the great song, he should have his head examined. The theme of each is so American, so powerful. Black and white. Good versus evil. Good prevails, because it (Wayne) does what needs to be done, even at a great sacrifice. In a way, it reminds me of America and how we protect others throughout the world - only to be denied credit for the good we perform. But we still do the moral and brave act each and every damn time. Thanks for the post!
sorry, I prefer the original sung version that was in the top 10 hits when the movie came out. it was more like a dirge and expressed the impending doom that pervaded thru the movie. this uptempo version kills the intended mood of a great classic.
Pretty cool. I'm not much into westerns, my dad is. In fact, he told me the answer, that Jimmy Stewart was given the credit for shooting Liberty Valance, but John Wayne actually shot him from a hidden location. While I was listening to this, he piped up "Oh, yeah, it's Liberty Valance!" he recognized it immediately...
I wish I could hear this my friend, and I am adding this to my videos to look forward to.
Liberty Valance was indeed a great western villain. But country and western films just don't cut it for me. I refrain from using a term stronger than great when talking about western villains, because they just had an incredibly robotic style of being a villain.

I was a child in the 60s when I saw this black and white movie
and then many times in reruns on TV
and heard the song many more, on AM radio and had it on a 45.
This video is absolutely perfect, spot on as it were.
The Americana that I grew up on,
at its very best.
Thanks
Good job! Pilgrim

reason why the song never made the movie. Thanks
