Roshi has that line about Goku "hitting a gold mine of power," and "a man could lose himself in it," and I always thought of this speech as Goku losing himself in said power. In the hyper-aggressive, over confident way that seems to happen when they're new to the transformation.
That, and he wouldn't actually know that he's a Super Saiyan. In "DBZ time," the legend is probably 45 minutes old to him, and he wouldn't have the sense to properly understand what's happened to himself.

the funi dub sucks for this reason. they give lines to characters who should never have said those lines. piccolo says "oh my gosh i can do this!" goku says "hammer time". freeza says "ride em cowboy!" etc. theres no need for it. stick to what toriyama wrote. everythign funi added was not only stupid but confusing and wrong.
I can see how "You ruthless, heartless, bastard. I will make you suffer," is more appropriate than "You're gonna pay for that," for children. I'm not sure of your age, but I just turned 21, and have watched this anime since I was 10. For some reason, when kids turn into adults, they think the things they liked as children are/should be/were violent and bloody as hell. Whether we like it or not, this was, for all intent and purposes, released as children's cartoon. We gotta realize.
That said, I know that DBZ is violent, as most fighting animes are, and I love most of the things they've done with Kai. They added those things for the kids. DBZ certainly wasn't going to be picked up by NBC and put on primetime T.V., so they put some things in that made it a little more kid friendly. I can honestly tell you that I was never confused by any of those things you mentioned. Not when I was 10, and not now. Corny? Yes. Meant for adult-level critical thinking? No.
@voxbox18 But you have to remember that during this saga, Vegeta talks constantly about Super Saiyans. Before he dies, he even says that Goku's become a Super Saiyan, and that Frieza's reign is over. He wasn't quite right, but he was close. And that in itself is enough for him to have known. Or at least understand that the tremendous power (this is usually joined by a euphoric feeling) he just got could be attributed to it. Nevermind that it's the one type of Saiyan that Frieza feared.
@ThaRotten1 Freiza's voice was better in DB Kai. That, and the speech Goku made in Kai was more in line with his actual personality. Goku doesn't brag like an arrogant ass and Funimation dropped the ball on this one.
For starters, Goku had never heard of the legend of the Super Sayian before landing on Planet Namech, so IMHO the Kai speech doesn't match the storyline. Plus, this speech captures the full essence of what Martial Arts really is all about...which makes it even more legit.
I wish they had kept this in the Kai Version. Some things just can't be improved on.
@floydefisher goku has heard of it. he was told all about it by vegeta and gokuy didnt believe him till now. kai speech was put in there by toriyama in the manga for a reason. its his ultimate character development. in the original manga, toriyama had goku finally accept his saiyan pride as vegeta did after hating on the saiyans. this never happens in funi dub. and the speech we got is cheesy and far out of character. goku doesnt have the vocab to say all this and he never thought he was a hero
@floydefisher dbz is about brutal fighting for the sake of it. goku is a saiyan, he lives for fighting strong people at little concern for others. all he cared about when informed about the androids was fighting them for the sport of it. he didnt care that they were going to kill everyone.

This sudden change in character is unusual for Goku and the reason why its so unusual is because Goku's character has never been this vicious before and that's what makes it so interesting because its a like struggle within a character's persona or in other words internal conflict.
1:46 All of a sudden, around the world, the people of Earth felt a chill go up their spine. It was at that moment that everyone felt that somehow, in some way, the universe finally felt safer.
Face it, Kai's Funi dub may be closer to the original Japanese script, but admit it: when Goku reached this point, paused, and then DIDN'T utter the words "I am the hope of the universe..." a little part of you was really sad for some reason.

Well the funimation dub isnt too bad. And besides, the funimation dub is dedicated to an American audience. If you dont like it then why are you guys watching this version. Just go look up the original japanese dub(which is great in its own ways) and stop complaining about how Goku isnt supposed to be an "American Hero" sheesh. regardless of the voices, goku still is a hero

Goku knew if he could not stop Frieza he was going to live on and continue killing people and the thought of that drove Goku crazy.

Maybe right now he isn't fighting for fun but later he does with 100% Frieza but that was only to prove a point to himself that beating Frieza at full power would prove that Frieza would no longer a threat and that he was stronger. He was still fighting serous. And please lets keep religion out of this, its so pose to be a fight between good and evil.

Roshi has that line about Goku "hitting a gold mine of power," and "a man could lose himself in it," and I always thought of this speech as Goku losing himself in said power. In the hyper-aggressive, over confident way that seems to happen when they're new to the transformation.
That, and he wouldn't actually know that he's a Super Saiyan. In "DBZ time," the legend is probably 45 minutes old to him, and he wouldn't have the sense to properly understand what's happened to himself.

I remember when Vegeta told him a little before he died, but when was the other time? And I never said Goku wasn't smart, I said he "wouldn't have the sense to properly understand..." He just watched his best friend die. He's tired and almost broken, physically and mentally. He undergoes a transformation that almost makes him lose himself. He wouldn't have enough wits left to say "Hm. I bet I'm a Super Saiyan," after just recently embracing his heritage and hearing the legend twice.

Like you said, Goku's basically a feral child, and both speeches are too poetic for him. I still don't quite agree with you, but that's okay. Why do you think the FUNi dub is shitty? I'll admit that the Kai dub is better at some parts, like Goku's first SSJ transformation, but the OG FUNi dub is still pretty good.

the funi dub sucks for this reason. they give lines to characters who should never have said those lines. piccolo says "oh my gosh i can do this!" goku says "hammer time". freeza says "ride em cowboy!" etc. theres no need for it. stick to what toriyama wrote. everythign funi added was not only stupid but confusing and wrong.

I'm not sure of your age, but I just turned 21, and have watched this anime since I was 10. For some reason, when kids turn into adults, they think the things they liked as children are/should be/were violent and bloody as hell. Whether we like it or not, this was, for all intent and purposes, released as children's cartoon. We gotta realize.

That said, I know that DBZ is violent, as most fighting animes are, and I love most of the things they've done with Kai. They added those things for the kids. DBZ certainly wasn't going to be picked up by NBC and put on primetime T.V., so they put some things in that made it a little more kid friendly. I can honestly tell you that I was never confused by any of those things you mentioned. Not when I was 10, and not now. Corny? Yes. Meant for adult-level critical thinking? No.

@voxbox18 But you have to remember that during this saga, Vegeta talks constantly about Super Saiyans. Before he dies, he even says that Goku's become a Super Saiyan, and that Frieza's reign is over. He wasn't quite right, but he was close. And that in itself is enough for him to have known. Or at least understand that the tremendous power (this is usually joined by a euphoric feeling) he just got could be attributed to it. Nevermind that it's the one type of Saiyan that Frieza feared.

For starters, Goku had never heard of the legend of the Super Sayian before landing on Planet Namech, so IMHO the Kai speech doesn't match the storyline. Plus, this speech captures the full essence of what Martial Arts really is all about...which makes it even more legit.
I wish they had kept this in the Kai Version. Some things just can't be improved on.

@floydefisher goku has heard of it. he was told all about it by vegeta and gokuy didnt believe him till now. kai speech was put in there by toriyama in the manga for a reason. its his ultimate character development. in the original manga, toriyama had goku finally accept his saiyan pride as vegeta did after hating on the saiyans. this never happens in funi dub. and the speech we got is cheesy and far out of character. goku doesnt have the vocab to say all this and he never thought he was a hero

This sudden change in character is unusual for Goku and the reason why its so unusual is because Goku's character has never been this vicious before and that's what makes it so interesting because its a like struggle within a character's persona or in other words internal conflict.

The old dub vs sub wars ended and died a long time ago, nobody cares, we all just shrug and say they both have merits. Reread my original comment, it was aimed at viewers of fhe dub back in the day when this first came out, as this is the series that got many of us interested in anime. My statement was meant out of irony, and nothing more.
