TSN won best score because it was everything a score should be. It was beautiful music that underscored the action of the scene, perfectly complimenting the emotion and the storyline and enhancing your feelings without drawing attention to itself and what it was doing. Perfect.
Hans Zimmer is wonderful, but he writes scores like an appendage. Maybe the orchestration sounds great alone, but in the movie it just distracts and detracts for me. Not to mention he reuses his work all the time.
Maybe it won because Inception was an orchestrated type score, nothing original. This was completely modern and original and was a really good score imo, still having said that - why didn't The Social Network win best picture or director as it was more original then The generic King's Speech?
@Paperbagman555 same reason Citizen Kane, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, etc did not win for Best Picture. The Academy likes to play it safe, and old fashioned. Sadly...
@Paperbagman555 I dont think it will ever be any different. 70 years ago they failed to do so. 30, 20,10,and this year it was all the same, and I dont know why, clearly TSN was a better film on every level than The King's Speech, but idk, the Academy members like to stay "classy" i guess...
the academy does tend to play it safe, but to say the kings speech was undeserving is, imo, wrong. My favorite film this year was the social network but the kings speech was an incredible movie as well
People are confusing Best Soundtrack with Best Score. As a soundtrack it's great. I listen to it everyday. As a score, it didn't even deserve to be nominated, let alone win.
I came here because I saw that they won an Oscar for the best soundtrack. I didn't watch the movie and I never thought that this movie would get an Oscar in this section. But now that I hear the tunes, I think that they totally deserved it.
@bellster24 the only song i can think of is "Talk" by coldplay. but it might be another song, but thats the only one that comes to my head when i hear it. it bugs me too that i can't figure out what it sounds like.
The bashers of this soundtrack shouldnt bother people. They're too used to the recycled bullshit from every other "artist" they buy at walmart. If I was a fan of fall out boy or bullet for my valentine, i probably wouldnt be used to good music either.
I'm sick of this argument! Both are good scores, Inception is pretty generic in my mind and I think the Social Network fit the film better than any other score, but all good scores.
@Reasonwillwin The same? My ass. I don't care if a soundtrack covers all the parts of the movie if it's still generic and lame. I could practically fall asleep with this soundtrack in my ears. It's uninteresting boring and really says something negative about the film. Where's the drama? Where's the passion? It isn't there! In my humble opinion. Thats where we differ though. You like generic techno and I love dramatic passionate soundtracks. ;)
@ProRanting Wait, Hans Zimmer writes dramatic and passionate music? Since when? All his scores sound exactly alike. So much for passion. This music is different, and in the context of the movie, thrusts it in the right direction. Sure, on it's own, it's just some chill tracking, and whatever. But when played with the scenes in the movie, it's absolutely soul crushing.
@CasualDiscussion *sigh* I feel bad for all these Zimmer bashers. His scores are incredible! You're entitled to your opinion, but just because in certain scores he uses similar instrumentation does not mean they're all the same.
That's like saying "all of beethovens music is the same because he used a classical orchestra"
Listen to the inception soundtrack, then listen to the holiday soundtrack, then to gladiator (all by zimmer) and THEN say that statement again.
@DillonB1234 While I think he is incredibly good, I just don't think his music is oscar worthy :P It's brilliant maybe, but it's put together just like every other movie score, and honestly it just isn't so absurdly good it deserves a award of such high standards.
@CasualDiscussion and this is?I don't mean to sound condescending, or to imply that your opinion isnt valid. But I just don't understand what you mean by "like every other score". Inception used pounding brass, incredibly unique synth sounds the likes of which haven't been used since blade runner, and it had compelling electric guitar/string elements which helped support and flesh out the melodies. TSN OST seems to be mostly groovy beats and synth soundscapes..very common in tv scoring actually
@DillonB1234 Pounding brass is a common element in movies, Just look at any average war movie or drama film. Strings and guitar is also a common element in most films, especially nowadays with the ease of arranging them and recreating them. The synth effects were cool, but honestly not all that impressive. They added a little flavor to the sound, but it's like adding salt to soup, it's only gonna make it so much better. The depth of the synth choices and the powerful melodies are what made TSN..
3 people are still looking for pieces to form their whole opinion on what transcendent music really sounds like...for those tired of wandering through the vast, empty vacuum alone forever trapped between two white ear-buds clinging to "The Downward Spiral", here is the next step...
@Fiaganja I was actually just joking. I'll try to make that more obvious next time. Little piece of advice, try not being so judgmental based on 1 joke made by somebody. I wasn't too shocked to see 7 out of 10 of your profile comments are people telling you to stop trolling. Being nicer to people will help you make more then a grand total of ONE friend on youtube in 3+ years. I'm a forgiving person and would be happy to help you create a social network on youtube. Peace and Respect.
there are just 2 reasons to watch a movie about the most overrated website or artifact or thing invented by a human ever created, 1. directed by david fincher, the guy that directed se7en, 2. the sound track is from trent fucking reznor
Guau! Lo primero que me impactó al sentarme en el cine y comenzar la película: la música es de Trent Reznor. También flipé con la Soundtrack de Fight Club. Total!!! Y vivan los Pixies.
does anybody knows if the song of the part that Zuckerberg and Parker are on a nightclub is from Reznor also? The "this is our time" part. That music sounded great.
@StayGoldDallybear Thanks, the search of "The sound of violence" in youtube lead me to an awesome classious video I've never seen and blew my mind. I found out that the name of the song is without the "the", it's just "sound of violence". So thanks for both things!
@gs8411 Same movie directors, different music directors. Dust Brothers is credited for Fight Club, Trent Reznor and Atticus are credited for Social Network.
Bottom line: Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross created one of the most musically, artistically and aesthetically significant soundtracks of recent years; and for Trent Reznor it signifies that progressively over time he continues to define your ideal quinessential perfectionist.
I'm looking forward to "The Social Network" for many things....David Fincher and Trent Reznor reunite. Note: David Fincher directed the "Only" music video for Trent.
@BadSeccc No, a remix for Closer was used in the opening credits. He never made any music specifically FOR the film, Fincher (or whoever was doing the music) decided to put that song in there.
More sheer musical genius from Trent and Atticus. Exactly what I have come to expect. Although I must say I am also disappointed that Trent associated himself and his incredible talent with a film that glorifies that inane, time-wasting social cancer known as Facebook.
@S4BIO it can be time-wasting but Mark Zuckerberg is still a genius for creating it and providing something which has captured the imaginations of BILLIONS.
@S4BIO motherfucker complaining about "that inane, time-wasting social cancer known as Facebook" on the GENIUS, COMPLETELY NONDISTRACTING, SUPER-FRIEND-MAKING website known as Youtube. Get off your fucking high horse. I'm pretty sure Trent doesn't give two fucks about disappointing you. Don't be trashing movies you don't understand or haven't even seen, cause... you know.....David Fincher made Fight Club.
@MachoMadness79 I'm sorry but I have yet to find anything on youtube that I would classify as "useful". It's brain numbing instant stimulation, like television on steroids. You say fb "provides a false sense of companionship and attention for the needy", well then you mind telling me just what the fuck a "vlog" is all about? I'm not trying to be a fb's fanboy, but I was able to hear my brother was in a hospital half way around the world through fb, much more "useful" than getting rick roll'd.
@kaosjm sorry to hear about your bro... and for personal issues such as that, there should be a more solid form of contact between siblings. im not familiar with vlogs, i just like to find old footage or listen to songs i havent heard in a while. i would say 96 percent of those on FB just want people to be interested in them and there lives, the rest i guess are looking to stay in touch with family or friends cause a phone call would be too much effort. We can go back and forth about it all day
@myboomstick agreed this is by far one of the best industrial/ambient music collaborations EVER PERIOD Trent Reznor with NIN was fucking AWESOME and then Atticus Ross sealed his awesomeness with the soundtrack for "the Book of Eli" was tight as hell so with those together i don't see how u could go wrong
@Wiid33z actually i've known about him, and i have the entire requiem for a dream soundtrack but i didn't know he did the soundtrack for smokin aces is it any good? lol and i still have yet to see the fountain
@AceOfVideos i thought so and the fountain is a very dark and tragic romance. i recommend any movie clint scores.. they usually all have that dark and mysteriousness to them
I can't belive Trent contributed such a great tune to such a pretentious, shitty movie about a "technology" which has destroyed the concept of human interaction.
@Anjohl i unlike you hold my opinions on movies until i have actually seen them. seems to make more logically sense instead of spewing bullshit but what do i know.
Somebody please upload the haunting version of "Hand Covers Bruise" with piano accompaniment! You can hear it on the official site. I want to "video to mp3" it.

@myboomstick The soundtrack worked so well for this movie. But believe me it's a lot more interesting than you think. Fincher's masterpiece.

@myboomstick word... Was pretty sick of seeing the previews until hearing some of these tracks and reading actual reviews of the film.

@myboomstick IT"s AWESOME FOR TRENT but the movie is awesome as well but Trent makes this movie EPIC

@myboomstick
the movie actually is really good, this music certainly helped that.
GB4ManU7fan 1 year ago
@myboomstick agreed this is by far one of the best industrial/ambient music collaborations EVER PERIOD Trent Reznor with NIN was fucking AWESOME and then Atticus Ross sealed his awesomeness with the soundtrack for "the Book of Eli" was tight as hell so with those together i don't see how u could go wrong
AceOfVideos 1 year ago
@AceOfVideos if u like them check out Clint Mansell. he did the Requiem for a Dream scores and The fountain. also Smokin Aces
Wiid33z 1 year ago
@Wiid33z actually i've known about him, and i have the entire requiem for a dream soundtrack but i didn't know he did the soundtrack for smokin aces is it any good? lol and i still have yet to see the fountain
AceOfVideos 1 year ago
@AceOfVideos i thought so and the fountain is a very dark and tragic romance. i recommend any movie clint scores.. they usually all have that dark and mysteriousness to them

I can't belive Trent contributed such a great tune to such a pretentious, shitty movie about a "technology" which has destroyed the concept of human interaction.

@Anjohl i unlike you hold my opinions on movies until i have actually seen them. seems to make more logically sense instead of spewing bullshit but what do i know.
