We have seasons due to the varying of the Earth's tilt, which therefore changes the amount of direct solar radiation received. It also has to do with the annual shift in the upper level jet stream. The reason why we have such cold winters in St. Cloud, is because of our latitude and the fact that since the jet stream shifts, it allows for colder air to flood the region during winter and all of the coupled with less direct solar radiation received due to our tilt.
