Really funny. Actually in China we have maybe thousands of accents. Foreigners only know mandarin and Cantonese maybe because there's more Cantonese go abroad. Many accents in China sound like even totally different languages. Mandarin is just a unified accent and that's all. Shanghai people don't speak Mandarin and even Beijingers have their own accents except the fact that their accent is most close to Mandarin.

It isn't exactly a slang, its a different dialect of Chinese. But in the US more cantonese people just happen to live there thats why its more recognized. Mandarin is supposed to be the "regular"/"national" language that everyone who's Chinese is supposed to speak.
