@iiAngelic Especially when Gaga is only a 100% knock-off of Madonna (who I also thought is/was a godawful to mediocre talent). Both are just good at marketing themselves.
To all you dudes and dudesses who are new to this gal, you WILL LOVE ' MAXAYN ' a SIMILAR FUNK/ROCK group out at the the same time . Their best songs were ''CHECK OUT YOUR MIND '' and ''THE ANSWER ''. That's right LADIES were doing it FOR REAL, LONG BEFORE THE spice girls, beyonce and gaga shit came along, and doing it with a lot more sooooooul. I don't feel sorry for the kids today, at least they can go out and buy the real stuff from the 70s and early eighties, check out 'TEMPTATIONS' '1990'LP
Move over Susie Quotro, A D is taking over, pity she only made two decent albums though, unlike JIMI HENDRIX, the MASTER, who made 10 Interstella albums, including the live ones. She is the musical equivalent of Angela Davis, on the F. B. I. s most wanted list, so she must of done something right. And all around her, Grover was doing his thing, Billy Paul his, Marvin Gay his, Temptations theirs, Ohio Players theirs, Sarah Vaughan hers, do you see what i'm getting at, she did'nt give a fuck
It was so much fun doing this LP with Betty! The day I hit San Fran. I went into the studio. I didn't even get to drop my stuff at the house! I flew from Washington. DC. But when I got there, it sure was funky!! I had big fun. Even met Buddy Miles! Very cool time for a young kid like myself. (at the time!) :) I still love you Betty!!
@tonyvaughn09 Wow! I never even heard of her before. A friend of mine told me to look her up and I am just amazed that this slipped past me back in the day. Got to pull my guitar out now and learn these grooves man. Lol!
This song is alive, restless, urgent, so distinctive! So glad someone pointed me to this. I clicked through because I didn't know if it was "retro"; it sounds like it could be on the radio today!
One thing bothers me a little in the comments: that people feel the need to praise Davis by slamming Gaga, who's got a strong voice, writes or co-writes her material, and works hard to blend performance art and music. Not your thing? Fine, but you don't have to hate one to love the other.
@zanseattle no ya have to hate her because she is an active member of the lets kill music for our own personal gain movement. shes a wanker. and your an enabler. mr gaga is shit...betty davis is THE SHIT. there is a very real difference
@zanseattle you dont get to judge class when you're defending Mr Gaga. ya want some class? go suck a fuck. she looks like a man. nothing homophobic/transphobic about it. stop using big words when you dont know what they mean. and transphobic isnt even a word. so, like i said go suck a fuck
@zanseattle well it is not hating it is stating an opinion you cant get mad at that. gaga is overrated and her voice is mediocre. but i get what you are saying but people have the right to compare if they want to
@mjjcng8958 I would disagree on the "mediocre voice" comment — if you haven't, check out one of the numerous piano/vocal videos of hers and see what she sounds like without all the other stuff. At least compared to the current crop of pop stars, she's definitely got pipes. But she may not be your taste, and that's fine, too.
@zanseattle Gaga=VERY talented and @ times creates smthng wondrous. Unfortntly much of her music has lost value & bcome relatvly formulaic as she found success. If she gets bac 2 bn true 2 the arts then she'll be fine. Right now she is suffering from Gaga-genericism, as Neo is suffering from Neo-genericism. Yes it was nice & new when u began, and althgh nobody can do what u do we need u 2 use u'r talent 2 constntly create things unheard of. Othrwise u bcome rightfully donned a "One Trick Pony"
@TheCK640 Gaga's only had three albums so far and I think she hasn't lost sight of the music being the most important thing, but she could easily get lost in all the fashion and shock and become irrelevant. I also hope she continues to push herself and improve.
@zanseattle because gaga just wants to be real famous, and davis is just real. she's really like that. no front, no ficade, it wasn't only for sells. if it were more people would know her, which would defiet the purpose in a way.
@fishnetsNcigarettes Show business is show business; I have no doubt that Betty Davis amped up her persona onstage to put on a good show as well. And that's fine; it didn't detract from the music, and I don't think it does in Gaga's case, either. I love that she is always trying new things and isn't afraid to make bold mistakes in the pursuit of art. And I don't like pitting talented women against each other.
@zanseattle Someone turned me on to this also. She is sooooo unique! I also agree that Davis and Gaga are brilliant in their own right, and I feel no reason to 'pick sides'. A great performance by Betty!
@charlyblues The top rated comment was the one I assumed. Regardless, It doesn't matter. What you said demonstrates that you think there is negativity associated with someone's music choice. To answer your question: You do.
Think before you speak and read before you assume.
And for godsake be flexible with your opinion and give yourself the space to admit ,and change your view.. Seriously you can thank me later, but now probably the first thing you'll do is be mad, because you feel a bit stupid right now, it's all good, you will learn.
@charlyblues The advice I gave you was the advice you just returned back to me? Do you know what subjective means? I agree you should read before you assume, I thought I had. Still I was only concerned with " comparing gaga to Betty Davis with gaga....where the fuck is this world going " If you don't know what's wrong with that then well.... i'm sorry the world is going to look sour for you once in a while. Peace.
Niva the soul diva is the next betty. check her out on youtube doing the stones brown sugar. completely different and only 23 . you're gonna love her!
Betty turned down Motown,Atlantic, and Columbia Records, for a deal with Just Sunshine Records (so she could produce, write, and sing her own music). No other woman in the business did this, not one. Music was the No.1 money maker in the world, and men ran the industry. Betty was singing about SEX, not love..STRENGTH,.AGGRESSION,Betty was singing of CHANGE. Men (the industry) could not allow this..NO AIR PLAY. Women in 2010 still do not sing of SEX,STRENGTH,or AGGRESSION.. But men do, don"t they?
geeez....how can you guys make this into a racial thing?! there's great artists, black, white, blue, yellow etc... just enjoy and respect without making it into a racial thing ;) peace out :)
@zedamasio You want to know why you never heard of her? MAYBE because of her blackness?haha. But if your white then you might not agree because everytime a black person mentions that FACT white people say oh no thats not true.Don't you know there are soooo many black artists that didn't make the charts and were cheated? Those filthy record companys screwed them good and she was one of them.Yeah a black Janis Joplin.haha.My goodness Hendrex was friends with both of them. You asked the question.haha
@reececup33 I am not gonna tell you, just because you're black, that you’re automatically well done or toast, that's for sure! although, daring things are more acceptable to white artist than to coloured ones and that's a fact. nowadays, corporations make twenty times more the screening than in the seventies, fact! but those are the rules, you know it, I know it, everybody knows it! if you want a make it and you're coloured don't try to be gaga or zapppa, you just got a play ball. take care :D
@zedamasio wrong! Whenever music made a major splash in America it has always come from the African American community and I will break it down for you starting with Ragtime at the turn of the century which was very out of the box considering what what happening in white america when it came to music, you want to examine Eubie Blanks and others that were pioneers then the white people came, like always and watered it down to make it acceptable to their palates
@zedamasio Next in line was Jazz out of New Orleans and that Black invented and also considered very controversial. Jazz was the urban slang for sex and the white people, at first were SHOCKED and did not want to have anything to do with that Jungle Music but like ALWAYS they came around and embraced it and watered it down.
@zedamasio Next was the Blues from the Delta and migrated to Chicago and again it was started by Black people, now the Blues is a bit harder to steal because it stems from so much negativity they had to suffer from ignorant white people, not all whites are ignorant but enough of them were and are, like yourself and well, what else to do but just sing the blues. This music in the pure form is not Clapton he is Blues Inspired, much of rock music pays respect to the American Bluesman
@zedamasio Rock and Roll part two: Okay, so you can find on youtube all the bland diluted versions of Little Richards music being sung by Pat Boone, just type in and you will find it. He was the acceptable less wild version and he made money off of Little Richards music because white radio stations would not play music by black people. They had to play on the black stations and the chitterling circuit. Oh, Hendrix worked with Little Richard first and he was a family friend, more on that later
@zedamasio there was a thing called Payola that was started by Alan Freed who whites give credit to bringing rock and roll to the them even though it had already been around in the black community for a long time. Blacks seldom had any Payola money to get their music on the main radio stations so when Elvis came along singing Hound Dog, which was written by two men from NYC and sang much better by Big Mama Thorton, you can youtube that also, she is brilliant and better.
@zedamasio and I am not saying it based on race, all you have to do is listen and you can hear who was better. But like it or not little dummy, the rea FACT is that the white music industry in the 50's did steal the music, they did and I am sorry you are having such a hard time accepting this history that you can look up and check and to ease your narrow mind, most of the books and articles written about what was stolen, by the white music industry, was written by other whites
@zedamasio I am worried about you, I mean it is not a great secret and yet some how you are so lost on this subject. The Beatles, Stones Clapton and other great rock bands all give credit to what the blacks did music wise, again get a book and read about it and make sure it is by a white person since you have such a problem accepting the truth when a black person tells you it. Ga-ga? YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME? When you are so talentless that you need wild gimmicks to get attention.! PASS
@zedamasio Zappa again some like him, I do not,. 200 Motels was a nightmare to watch and listen to. I mean if you like him cool but again with the gimmicks and tricks? Why not just be able to sing unless your audience is so easily distracted.
Hendrix! OKAY well he was friends of our family, my mom went to school with him and my uncle had his first band with him, they went to Leschi Elementary here in Seattle. He use to practice in my grandpa's basement with Luther Rabb (look him up
@zedamasio Again Jimi was an innovator and others are still mimicking him. Jimi played all kinds of music. I mean gigging the pioneer of rock and roll Little Richard! He was always different, since he was a kid and always into music. He hung with Janis here and there but they were not real friends, they both lived at the Chelsea but so did my uncle who was touring with Jimi with his band The Ballinjacks ( you can find it on youtube) Janis sucked! OMG! Sound and fury
Respond to this video..All that screaming and shouting and not sounding good but interesting to watch and the white people loved her. Give me Aretha! Sober and talented and not falling all over the place like a fool But if you need those theatrics to maintain interest then that would explain why you like lady Ca-Ca.
I mean just because something is popular does not mean it is good, don't you know that? You should. But I am getting bored by you, you no longer amuse me.READ BOOKS!!!!
@reececup33 Okay, lets move on to what was called Race Music by the whites and Rock and Roll by the Blacks in the 50's. Rocket 88 is widely known to be the first Rock and Roll song, I think it was Caldonia by Louis Jordan but that is just me. Anyway this music was so taboo. It came from the Juke Joints, Little Richard is important but Little Richard was WAY TOO WILD and in the 50;s he was blending the gender roles and the white people almost died. Part one
@reececup33 I mean you really must read about things and arm yourself with real knowledge because you armed yourself with ignorance and hate and you got it all wrong. The truth always hurts but you must accept it. It is not that way now but IT WAS THAT WAY back then. And we have given America the foundation to some great music and you should say thank you instead of acting like a natural born fool. Read about Alan Freed and Payola the Quazar of Rock and so on, be smart not dumb, it work better
@kimrabb there's a popular saying in my country that goes like this: ok you win, you take the bicycle but leave me the ringing bell. I am not talking about music, I am talking about censorship!!!!!! it exists for the black man and for the white man but I think it's tidier for the black man, that's all!!!!! take care :D
@kimrabb Whats funny to me is that you start the conversation off trying to "address" and make yourself look as if your trying to "address" ignorance. However, in the end YOU conclude being the ignorant. What a joke and hypocritical I must say.No point made because your vocabulary is limited.Besides I know the truths hurts.Same old BS but no facts.Give me facts that the things I stated never happened to black people?? Opinion thats all it is.haha.Mine is mine so I'll leave it as that.FACTS.Thanks.
@kimrabb Correction in my 1st message to you because you will email me a dumb message about my spelling error. This is Youtube not Harvard. YOU "conclude" the notion with being the ignorant one.Anyway stick to the topic. Stop trying to distract the fact that black artists were used up and thrown away by these money hungry white devils.Facts hold up in court opinions SINK.The truth does hurt I know its written all in your message.hahaaaaaa
This is where Betty was, and where she came from. T-Bone Walker, guitar/Willie Dixon,bass/Fats Waller, piano. As Betty called the names of each star ,she purposely tried to give her audience the feel of each artist, and their sound. No other artist that I know of ever gave this kind of respect to those who came before. THIS IS WHERE SHE WAS, AND WHERE SHE CAME FROM!
@chea943 Excellent point!! ...I never fully realized that until I read your post. ...W/o question, she was a true innovator and may her funk live on forever!!
@ThePookie27 sorry bro. huisrukker is dutch and means home wanker as i sit all day on my lazy ass playing onlinepoker, wank off and listen to good music :))
Yesssss...she was and still is hot. She finally got her royalties..so happy for you Betty..i was soo excited when I heard a very rear live interview from her..i will try to find the station online again..
Just tough enough. Why didn't she become a superstar? Probably because she represented something that totally initimidated the crap out of the establishment.
i dont understand why this isnt playing on the radio all the time and i dont understand why fucking this chick isnt on the cover of every magazine being the sexayest woman ever lived
i heard that none of her albums sold well, i wonder why?

Music was the No.1 money maker in the world, and men ran the industry. Betty was singing about SEX, not love..STRENGTH,.AGGRESSION,Betty was singing of CHANGE. Men (the industry) could not allow this..NO AIR PLAY. Women in 2010 still do not sing of SEX,STRENGTH,or AGGRESSION.. But men do, don"t they?

this is really good!!!!!! how come I never knew her????????
zedamasio 1 year ago
@zedamasio You want to know why you never heard of her? MAYBE because of her blackness?haha. But if your white then you might not agree because everytime a black person mentions that FACT white people say oh no thats not true.Don't you know there are soooo many black artists that didn't make the charts and were cheated? Those filthy record companys screwed them good and she was one of them.Yeah a black Janis Joplin.haha.My goodness Hendrex was friends with both of them. You asked the question.haha
reececup33 1 year ago
@reececup33 I am not gonna tell you, just because you're black, that you’re automatically well done or toast, that's for sure! although, daring things are more acceptable to white artist than to coloured ones and that's a fact. nowadays, corporations make twenty times more the screening than in the seventies, fact! but those are the rules, you know it, I know it, everybody knows it! if you want a make it and you're coloured don't try to be gaga or zapppa, you just got a play ball. take care :D
zedamasio 1 year ago 2
@zedamasio wrong! Whenever music made a major splash in America it has always come from the African American community and I will break it down for you starting with Ragtime at the turn of the century which was very out of the box considering what what happening in white america when it came to music, you want to examine Eubie Blanks and others that were pioneers then the white people came, like always and watered it down to make it acceptable to their palates
kimrabb 1 year ago
@zedamasio Next in line was Jazz out of New Orleans and that Black invented and also considered very controversial. Jazz was the urban slang for sex and the white people, at first were SHOCKED and did not want to have anything to do with that Jungle Music but like ALWAYS they came around and embraced it and watered it down.
kimrabb 1 year ago
@zedamasio Next was the Blues from the Delta and migrated to Chicago and again it was started by Black people, now the Blues is a bit harder to steal because it stems from so much negativity they had to suffer from ignorant white people, not all whites are ignorant but enough of them were and are, like yourself and well, what else to do but just sing the blues. This music in the pure form is not Clapton he is Blues Inspired, much of rock music pays respect to the American Bluesman
kimrabb 1 year ago
@zedamasio I will give white people country music, I mean that is their soul and they can HAVE IT.
kimrabb 1 year ago
@zedamasio Rock and Roll part two: Okay, so you can find on youtube all the bland diluted versions of Little Richards music being sung by Pat Boone, just type in and you will find it. He was the acceptable less wild version and he made money off of Little Richards music because white radio stations would not play music by black people. They had to play on the black stations and the chitterling circuit. Oh, Hendrix worked with Little Richard first and he was a family friend, more on that later
kimrabb 1 year ago
@zedamasio there was a thing called Payola that was started by Alan Freed who whites give credit to bringing rock and roll to the them even though it had already been around in the black community for a long time. Blacks seldom had any Payola money to get their music on the main radio stations so when Elvis came along singing Hound Dog, which was written by two men from NYC and sang much better by Big Mama Thorton, you can youtube that also, she is brilliant and better.
kimrabb 1 year ago
@zedamasio and I am not saying it based on race, all you have to do is listen and you can hear who was better. But like it or not little dummy, the rea FACT is that the white music industry in the 50's did steal the music, they did and I am sorry you are having such a hard time accepting this history that you can look up and check and to ease your narrow mind, most of the books and articles written about what was stolen, by the white music industry, was written by other whites
kimrabb 1 year ago
@zedamasio I am worried about you, I mean it is not a great secret and yet some how you are so lost on this subject. The Beatles, Stones Clapton and other great rock bands all give credit to what the blacks did music wise, again get a book and read about it and make sure it is by a white person since you have such a problem accepting the truth when a black person tells you it. Ga-ga? YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME? When you are so talentless that you need wild gimmicks to get attention.! PASS
kimrabb 1 year ago
@zedamasio Zappa again some like him, I do not,. 200 Motels was a nightmare to watch and listen to. I mean if you like him cool but again with the gimmicks and tricks? Why not just be able to sing unless your audience is so easily distracted.
Hendrix! OKAY well he was friends of our family, my mom went to school with him and my uncle had his first band with him, they went to Leschi Elementary here in Seattle. He use to practice in my grandpa's basement with Luther Rabb (look him up
kimrabb 1 year ago

Part one
kimrabb 1 year ago
@reececup33 I mean you really must read about things and arm yourself with real knowledge because you armed yourself with ignorance and hate and you got it all wrong. The truth always hurts but you must accept it. It is not that way now but IT WAS THAT WAY back then. And we have given America the foundation to some great music and you should say thank you instead of acting like a natural born fool. Read about Alan Freed and Payola the Quazar of Rock and so on, be smart not dumb, it work better
kimrabb 1 year ago
@kimrabb there's a popular saying in my country that goes like this: ok you win, you take the bicycle but leave me the ringing bell. I am not talking about music, I am talking about censorship!!!!!! it exists for the black man and for the white man but I think it's tidier for the black man, that's all!!!!! take care :D
zedamasio 1 year ago
@kimrabb Whats funny to me is that you start the conversation off trying to "address" and make yourself look as if your trying to "address" ignorance. However, in the end YOU conclude being the ignorant. What a joke and hypocritical I must say.No point made because your vocabulary is limited.Besides I know the truths hurts.Same old BS but no facts.Give me facts that the things I stated never happened to black people?? Opinion thats all it is.haha.Mine is mine so I'll leave it as that.FACTS.Thanks.
reececup33 1 year ago
