Where as in Britain you would have a fat policeman pull out a tazer and not fire it. Then apprehend the terrorist put him in the back of a Vauxhall Astra Estate and drive him to the local police station and keep him overnight thus letting him go in 12 hours and fine him 20 quid.

@airsark Alright, The GIGN are part of the gendarmerie nationale and the gendarmerie is a different branch of the army. so they are army. The GIPN groupe d'intervention de la police nationale in a part of the police special forces branch along with the RAID.

@funkitkat911 Yeah, from what I understand, they fall under Special Ops, chain-of-command wise, but are specialized for Counter-terrorism operations. However, they also have police authority (e.g. power of arrest) and do a lot of police duty as well. I suppose you could compare them to a SWAT team on steroids.
