  • um, see samba in brazil, or gafeira, this is a nice dance, but NOT samba - sorry

  • This is not samba, it's seems more like bolero to me.

  • It's not SAMBA sorry

  • thank you for this video..not many viewers know about ballroom samba... brazillian samba is when women wear sexy costumes with extravagant headresses and dances samba the old fashion way.. hip movements all the way ^^.. while ballroom amba composes of a female and a male dancing samba in a more complex step... you can see other ballroom samba if you search international latin competition in the category of samba.. it's pretty amazing ^^.....

  • se isso for samba um dia os brasileiros estarão perdidos! A musica que toca é bolero, está muito longe de ser samba e os dançarinos parecem dois pedaços de madeira de tão duros para dançar!

  • this looks like slow waltz !!!!

  • @SNicoleGL Actually, samba is faster than a waltz. And samba is kind of the reverse of a waltz so yeah :)

  • OMG Make them go away !

  • @moongirl232

It's not even ballroom Samba. It's another of those appalling, painting-by-numbers "social" adaptations they dream up in the US.

  • i love samba i like brazilllllll we will win the mondial

  • It IS a good video. Most dance videos are absolutely worthless when it comes to really helping you learn....

  • eww :S

  • He is gay anyway - so it doesn't matter....

  • @Indygoguy this isnt even samba! noone dances this in brasil! there is no such thing as ballroom samba!

  • this is not samba

  • its american Samba.. it is what it is.

  • bueno, muy didáctico.

  • boring....

  • He is actually my dance teacher. His name is Donald Johnson and that is his former partner Kasha Kozak. They won the most prestigious dancesport competition in the world. Blackpool dancesport festival. He is amazing and he is now married to Irina Shukhat who is also my teacher,

  • He has coached me and my students in Wisconsin. he was so cool and laid back. He never put himself above the teacher.

  • @tacoburritoKINGS to bad he doesnt know how to samba :P

  • Let's see the real samba.

  • what is this shit?!?

  • Wou, sure can learn from this

  • nice one!

  • great way to learn!

  • Samba its like Karate, there are many styles, but it always be karate from Japan.

  • All kind of samba has its origin in Brazil. It was improved by many dancers around the world, but samba at any kind is 100% brazilian.

  • this is a first step the people learn in Gafieira...but just to "learn the rhythm"...we don't dance this step in ballrooms

  • This is not Gafieira... this is the basic step of the "samba internacional" or "Ballroom Samba"

  • they say in wikipedia the origin is brazilian. até no wiki eles fala que é brasileiro.

  • Yes the origin is Brazilian. It is BASED on Maxixe from 90 years ago. It is NOT Brazilian samba or gafieira. This is an international style created by French choreographers 90 years ago and it is danced all over the world.

  • what?hahahahaha if the origin is brazilian how come it was created by frenchers.....????????????

  • The samba internacional has its origins in Brazil. You can also say that the rhythm of the saba has its origins in Africa. Or that the bossa nova has its origins on the american jazz.

Search on youtube for "ballroom samba" you'll see that this style is not danced in Brazil. But it is widely danced all over the world.

  • man dont say shit, dont be crazy, we are talking about samba not any other kind one. See ballroom samba on wikipedia then in english, youll see its origin is brazilian, you are wrong, dont try to make your misunderstanding right.

  • watch?v=Za-jol3P7Y8 there are two kinds of samba. I bet you don't dance either of them.

  • but its origins is brazilian.

  • da pra ver claramente no video o samba. i can see clearly on the video the samba roots.

  • Here is your big mistake. you can clearly see that they are dancing based on the box step. The box step is the basic step of the Waltz that has its origins on the European courts on the end of the XIX century.

  • wrong man, its origins is in samba, thats why it is called samba too. Ballroom Samba is nothing but samba mixed with european dance.

  • it became famous in france, and then they wrote a book teaching how to dance in france, they didnt creat anything. dont say wrogn information.

  • Samba internacional"Esse estilo tem origem no Brasil no início do século XX. O samba era conhecido como maxixe até por volta de 1915. Devida a sua popularidade, essa dança se proliferou para outros países"

  • SAMBA is Samba!!

Brazilian samba....is that you see in carnaval, but also ballroon samba is brazilian ...the name is SAMBA DE GAFIEIRA..or only GAFIEIRA... But the two Kinds of samba are BRAZILIAN SAMBA!!!

I'm Brazilian, i known samba since I was born and I do Ballroom dance....

So...Brazilian samba and Ballroom sabma can be the same!!

    Samba is Samba!!

Samba (carnaval) Samba Gafieira and samba rock are BRAZILIAN SAMBA...

    =)

  • Não. Just because you don't like something you can't change reality to suit your ideas. Check on the portuguese wikipedia "Samba internacional"

  • I don't said it's wrong...don't worry!

I Said it's right! It is the basic step, the first step we learn!!

Read again, but I'll be more clear, I said that we,in Brasil, in these days, 2008, don't dance this step any more in ballrooms, in parties, only in school, to learn the rhythm, we usually dance others steps, samba have many steps, but it's right, and they dance good!! I know exactly what is samba, samba "carnaval", samba gafieira(this video)and samba rock. I like the video...I just comment.

  • See, you got me wrong. Ballroom Samba is not Brazilian. That's what I'm trying to explain. It was based on maxixe but it is not the same as samba de gafieira. This is the basic step of International Ballroom Samba. It looks a lot like Samba de gafieira, but the rythm is different and Ballroom Samba isn't always danced along with samba music. That's why I told you to check the pt.wikipedia "international samba" so you can see that it is a different thing. (check the videos link)

  • Hi again!

Ok, Mark, before I comment here I checked in wikipedia,I understand know what you said, but the base of steps are the same, and the base of the song of this video is samba, and now,we have a New style of samba gafieira in brasil,is Style Jimmy de Oliveira, that we dance with others songs, like black music and others.Just for curious, where are you from?

Well,I understand you,and I believe that you understand me...so...everything's ok...

    =)

And for all that read this....sorry my bad english

  • what you mean Ballroom Samba is not Brazilian. Of course it is. é da onde então?

  • Search on the Portuguese Wikipedia "samba internacional"

  • One more thing, the people usually don't accept the opinions of brazilian people...we live and we know all kinds of samba since we born, even the brazilians that don't like samba know, cause it's a part of our culture.I'm not doing critics or talking bad, in contractile,I'm agree, and said this is a good video, and IS samba!! So...please people...peace!! And little more polite in comments, not only in this video...everybody is right in own opinion, and it's just a video...so...Peace!! And Smiles!!! =)

  • Yeah the basic step is very similar but the actual dance is very different check the link that says "referencias externas" on that wikipedia article. I dance both styles for more than 15 years, so I know what I'm talking about. Achei que dava para notar de onde eu sou. I really like this video here I hope they post more like this. Their technique and way to explain the transfer of weight can be basic but many advanced dances forget about these techniques.

  • Na verdade pelo "Marksp" imaginei que fosse de SP...mas sei lá....falei que era brasileira e continuou falando em inglês...de repente podia ser só coincidência...

    =)

And I know that new style is different, I just comment...only this.... I know that is different.

Cool!! You dance a long time!! More than me! But I dance all styles too!

    =)

  • thats right

    well said

  • yeah there's two kind of samba, one inspired by African dances, often seen in fiestas, carnavales and rodas, and the other style came from portugese and was inspired by European dances, thus the ballroom samba.

  • great video. i like donald. hes very educated in dancing.

  • If you knew something about Samba history, you would be aware that the style of dancing in the above clip resembles the Samba Carioca which Fred Astaire observed in the 1930's. It continued to evolve in Brazil, but evolved very little in the U.S.

  • Brazilians do not consider this style of samba to be ballroom samba. To them, samba de gafieira is ballroom samba. They're two totally different styles.

  • Yes, we have heard that before. You should bear in mind that the dancing in this video was designed, primarily, to be easy to learn. It was never intended to be an exact duplicate of traditional Brazilian dancing.

It's nice hearing from you again, by the way. :-))

  • he´s right. Samba is both a ballroom dance and a party dance. Did you ever dance samba-rock ? it´s a ballroom dance as well.

  • Oh, I got the music, now I can dance with my wife!

  • no it's samba :)

  • this is ballroom not samba

  • samba is included in the latin ballroom dances... so yes this is samba

  • The American samba in the above clip is included among the American ballroom rhythm dances. In ballroom, "latin" is a term which refers to International samba, rumba, cha-cha-cha, jive and paso doble.

  • Thanks

  • yeah, in case you don't know they just happen to be some of the best dancers in America...so unless your teacher is Colin James, I doubt you'll find better instruction...and anything on this basic level isn't going to be how they would teach experienced dancers.

  • thank you very much, your video series are great :)
