all you dumb "I don't read books" dumbasses out there should just shut up
Senator Byrd had served America and done more for the state of West Virginia then anyone else. As a true West Virginian I'm proud of him and of his standing record of longest serving senator. His bones were tired and weak but he was a true patriot and served even when times were tough. He will be missed by those who feel his contributions and his loss deep down
So many stupid people leaving dumb, disrespectful comments here. Robert Byrd was very very old and infirm at this time, but make no mistake, his mind was working very very well. He gave half a century of his life to the service of his nation, so shut up and read a damn book.

@Hounsfield Didn't he show regret and remorse for saying total crap like that? Senator Byrd said his biggest regret as a politician was opposing the civil rights movement in the early 60s.
GOODBYE to yet ANOTHER scumbag politician who's had his lips firmly clamped on the public tit for YEARS. This guy was such a dottering old idiot. Also if he is great and sober; why is it, he never even addressed the FHA issue there? He just went and rambled about how Senators should not talk in the 3rd person or 2nd person, and mumble. He was not crying; unless it was drunken tears.
Did he cry when he donned his white hood and vowed ..... I shall never fight in the armed forces with a Negro by my side... I am pretty sure that this guy was born BEFORE God was. We cant be sure though because I am also sure that he was born before the invention of the pencil so we have no clear record of his actual birth date. With any luck maybe someone from some archeological site somewhere will actually unearth the stone tablet that bears this mans birth certificate. Certainly the Senate should consider placing an age limit on its senators of at least younger than a thousand anyways.
Please good people of WV. If there is a good chance your lawmaker is making poo poo in his big boy diaper while adressing the Senate, it may be time to look for someone, I don't know, born after the civil war.
I think hes having a small allergy attack. He sniffling, there's kleenex in his hand. I have nasal allergies as well so I know that face lmao. Still, funniest thing I ever saw lol.
The issue is whether or not this man is still capable of fulfilling his duties at a United States Senator. If this video is not clear proof of his inability to serve I do not know what would be. It would be in the best interests of the people that he represents to step aside.
I love how the Republicans keep bringing up the fact that Byrd was a Klansman 40 or 50 years ago despite the fact that he has renounced the Klan. But when it came to George W. Bush's DUI, well, that doesn't matter because it happened soooo long ago and Bushie said he was sorry.
I've heard numerous Republicans say that George W. Bush's DUI was no big thing, because it happened so long ago. Republicans love to forgive and forget when it's one of their own. But when it's a Democrat, well...
George W. Bush ran for president on a theme of "honor and dignity". I've never heard Bill Clinton or Robert Byrd sit on their high horse and say they were men of "honor and dignity". Bill Clinton was a liar but at least he never pretended to be a saint like George W. Bush did.
Granted, there are plenty of clean, honest Republicans (like Richard Lugar) but George W. Bush is not one of them. Consider changing your avatar.
But there's a difference. While each party has its share of corruptness and dishonesty, there's a particular arrogance to the Republicans b/c they're the ones who harp about morality and family values. Bush arrogantly proclaimed himself to be a man of "honor and dignity", and despite being a draft-dodger like Clinton, he even had the gall to say he understood the sacrifice of America's servicemen and women.
I can tolerate a liar, but I can't stand a hypocrite.
Then you should shoot yourself. YOUR AN IDOT, I WORK AT THE SENATE AND THE TWO SENATORS THAT ARE EVEN CORRUPT AT ALL ARE ON THE DEM SIDE. Little boy or girl who ever you are, when you grow up and really learn politics instead of watching it on tv then you will understand, until then shut up we dont need you.
Oh I see. So you're saying that all Republicans are honest and morally infallible, whereas all Democrats are lying, corrupt douchebags. Yep, I got it.
You work at the Senate and you can't even know how to spell "you're". So tell me, since you obviously have no skills or credentials, which Senator did you fellate to get your job there?
In essence, hypocrisy is the same as lying. It is the distinct denial of lying that sets hypocrisy apart from all else.
Back to the point, I agree that Republicans have used morals and family values to "thwart" and condem the other party, but all opinions aside, there ARE both good and bad politicians on both and all ends of the political spectrum, but I see where you're comming from...
Yeah a former Klansman is a man of God, right. I cannot believe that the people of West Virgina continue to re-elect this man who clearly unable to perform his duties.
Thats so stupid of you. Man of God, what god the sleeping god. This guy is a joke and needs to be in a nursing home. Hopefully somebody helps him out, I feel sorry for him.
He's been in Congress longer than anyone there & if he saw the rules & manners of Congress go by the wayside- he more than anyone else in this country had a right to say something. Perhaps it took him a while to get it out, but he made absolute perfect sense
My opinion Senator Byrd has NOTHING TO DO WITH THE WORD "LIBERAL". He STANDS for AMERICA & he stands for what is right. When the "war" w/ Iraq was being so quickly pushed through Congress, Senator Byrd was the one who said "WAIT. Don't rush this".
To the comment below: I don't live in W.V.- I am not a liberal or democrat or Dem. Or Repub. Or Independent- I don't believe in labels but Senator Byrd is my true hero & one of the few people who give me hope for this country. He's ole so it took him a long to get out what he wanted to say & it made perfect sense & it needed to be said.
I understand about his age and everything, but it's obvious he was just suffering from a bad cold here. Senators shouldn't attend sessions if they're sick.
Strom Thurmond, my ass! I've never even been to West Virginia, and I am still a huge fan of Senator Byrd. He has served longer in the Senate and cast more votes than any other senator in American history. What really touches me is that, two years ago, when his term was up, his wife had recently died, and he was approaching age 90. Yet, he ran for an unprecedented ninth term in the Senate because he wanted to serve West Virginians. God bless you, Senator Byrd! God bless you!
I was slow to grow into adolescence. By the time I was thirteen years old, my breasts were tender and beginning to swell, which made me "too old" for VanderJagt's pedophile perversions. When my father brought me to Mackinac Island for routine prostitution at the Political Retreat, VanderJagt introduced me to a new friend he had made now that he was in Washington, D.C. as a U.S. Congressman—U.S. Senator Robert C. Byrd, Democrat from West Virginia.
Byrd had been a US Senator as long as I have been alive, serving as Senate Whip and later as President Pro Tempore of the Senate & as the all powerful Senate Appropriations leader. Byrd commanded attention & respect from all who came in contact with him, particularly from my father. When we were left alone in his room, he loomed over me in a threatening stance. His cold, blue slitty eyes locked onto mine. I undressed and climbed into his bed as ordered.
That's a disgusting comparison and you should be ashamed of yourself. You have a very poor grasp on history, and it shows off in this ignorant comment. Many Germans supported Hitler out of fear, but you didn't say that. Byrd has been against this war from the beginning. He's one of the few Senators with good views on foreign policy.
The man has done more for this state than could ever hope to do in your lifetime.
Nice Reductio ad Hitlerum fallacy. Byrd has apologized many times. You know nothing about Byrd and you clearly know nothing about arguing as well. People change and Byrd is not an exception.
Well I think that there are certain things that can be looked past and there are things that cannot. I cannot look past his former leadership position in the KKK as he is an elected official that is near the top of the Presidential line of succession.
if he is genuinely ill then I feel evry sorry for him. But don't his family, or party, have enough respect for the man in such a situation to sort something out so that he isn't remembered like this? It is an embarrassment.
This is the Chairman of the largest committee in the Senate.
The subject of "Economic Stimulus" seems pretty important to the committee that holds the ATM card for the government, especially the guy who knows the PIN.
I'm curious why he chose to use this time to discuss his chosen topic, instead of how economic stimulus directly affects appropriations. Where will the stimulus come from?
I don't care haw the Senators address each other, but they seem to be addressing us as 'suckers'.
Benjamin Franklin was getting on in years soon after the Revolutionary War too. In fact, he had to be brought in on a litter to the hall where they were debating the first portions of the Constitution becasue he didn't have the energy to even walk into the building under his own power.
I suppose you right wing goons would have said he was a senile old coot too and kicked him out the door.
Holy crap! West Virginians! What the hell is wrong with you? Electing this idiot time and time again! No wonder your state gets made fun of all the time.
After being locked into a bitter court fight for Guardianship for my 90-year-old Uncle with a belligerant form of dementia, I was surprised to see the hateful KKK, racist Byrd get the docile form of dementia. I would have thought he would have been chasing Obama with a hangman's noose on the Senate floor.....
wikipedia: Robert Byrd was born on November 20, 1917 !
That makes him 2008-1917= 91 years young!
Assumed office in January 3, 1959 !
That is a 49 years !
In his speech on March 13 2003: "If the United States leads the charge to war in the Persian Gulf, we may get lucky and achieve a rapid victory. But then we will face a second war: a war to win the peace in Iraq. This war will last many years and will surely cost hundreds of billions of dollars..."
This is filibustering. But he is probably too old, yes. However, he has opposed the Bush administration all along - that surely shows integrity and courage.
Is the Senator.......from Tinbucktoo...aware! of that 'ruuuuule', that he may have to serve as Senator Pro-tempore after the Senator from West Virginia......takes his seat.
The line of succession of the presidency, Article I, section 3 of the Constitution, is 1)Vice President Cheney 2)Speaker of the House Pelosi, and 3)the babbling senile old fool in this pathetic video,Robert Byrd, who is President pro tempore of the United States Senate. The people of West Virginia should be ashamed of themselves for allowing this to go on. I'd hate to be the one to have to clue this senile simpleton, that he's gotta move on. I'd have to tell him in 3rd person? Hell no! GIT COOT
I think (if im correct) hes saying that Senators need to address eachother in the third person...so they wont "display bad tempers"...someone clearly didn't refer to him in the third person and it pissed him off.

mps05001 3 years ago
I am pretty sure that this guy was born BEFORE God was. We cant be sure though because I am also sure that he was born before the invention of the pencil so we have no clear record of his actual birth date. With any luck maybe someone from some archeological site somewhere will actually unearth the stone tablet that bears this mans birth certificate. Certainly the Senate should consider placing an age limit on its senators of at least younger than a thousand anyways.

Byrd for president 2012?
Taterbug889 3 years ago 6
The issue is whether or not this man is still capable of fulfilling his duties at a United States Senator. If this video is not clear proof of his inability to serve I do not know what would be. It would be in the best interests of the people that he represents to step aside.
UncleGeorgeW 3 years ago
And all the Democrats who bitched about McCain's old age during the campaign. This man is a joke.
UncleGeorgeW 3 years ago
I love how the Republicans keep bringing up the fact that Byrd was a Klansman 40 or 50 years ago despite the fact that he has renounced the Klan. But when it came to George W. Bush's DUI, well, that doesn't matter because it happened soooo long ago and Bushie said he was sorry.
sean2015 2 years ago
I am sorry I just do not see Klan membership as the same as a DUI.
UncleGeorgeW 2 years ago
I've heard numerous Republicans say that George W. Bush's DUI was no big thing, because it happened so long ago. Republicans love to forgive and forget when it's one of their own. But when it's a Democrat, well...
sean2015 2 years ago
Well one DUI is not a big thing. What the KKK does is a big deal.
UncleGeorgeW 2 years ago
Consider changing your avatar.
sean2015 2 years ago
both parties are like that....that's how our politics are...everyone points fingers....it sucks..but both parties do it
Algernonimous 2 years ago
But there's a difference. While each party has its share of corruptness and dishonesty, there's a particular arrogance to the Republicans b/c they're the ones who harp about morality and family values. Bush arrogantly proclaimed himself to be a man of "honor and dignity", and despite being a draft-dodger like Clinton, he even had the gall to say he understood the sacrifice of America's servicemen and women.
I can tolerate a liar, but I can't stand a hypocrite.
sean2015 2 years ago
Then you should shoot yourself. YOUR AN IDOT, I WORK AT THE SENATE AND THE TWO SENATORS THAT ARE EVEN CORRUPT AT ALL ARE ON THE DEM SIDE. Little boy or girl who ever you are, when you grow up and really learn politics instead of watching it on tv then you will understand, until then shut up we dont need you.
thegnastygnome 2 years ago
Oh I see. So you're saying that all Republicans are honest and morally infallible, whereas all Democrats are lying, corrupt douchebags. Yep, I got it.
You work at the Senate and you can't even know how to spell "you're". So tell me, since you obviously have no skills or credentials, which Senator did you fellate to get your job there?
sean2015 2 years ago
Well, since you are jealous, google Sen. Bennet from Utah, Page 2009. That's who talked to you. Such rage when proven wrong...
thegnastygnome 2 years ago
That was a little harsh dont you think gnome?
tinadallama 2 years ago
In essence, hypocrisy is the same as lying. It is the distinct denial of lying that sets hypocrisy apart from all else.
Back to the point, I agree that Republicans have used morals and family values to "thwart" and condem the other party, but all opinions aside, there ARE both good and bad politicians on both and all ends of the political spectrum, but I see where you're comming from...

A Byrd in the Senate is worth two Bushes in the White House.
sean2015 3 years ago
He's been in Congress longer than anyone there & if he saw the rules & manners of Congress go by the wayside- he more than anyone else in this country had a right to say something. Perhaps it took him a while to get it out, but he made absolute perfect sense
Susieshepherd 3 years ago
My opinion Senator Byrd has NOTHING TO DO WITH THE WORD "LIBERAL". He STANDS for AMERICA & he stands for what is right. When the "war" w/ Iraq was being so quickly pushed through Congress, Senator Byrd was the one who said "WAIT. Don't rush this".
Susieshepherd 3 years ago
To the comment below: I don't live in W.V.- I am not a liberal or democrat or Dem. Or Repub. Or Independent- I don't believe in labels but Senator Byrd is my true hero & one of the few people who give me hope for this country. He's ole so it took him a long to get out what he wanted to say & it made perfect sense & it needed to be said.

he's no Strom Thurmond.
NutJunkies 3 years ago
Do you think we should enact term limits?
sean2015 3 years ago
Strom Thurmond, my ass! I've never even been to West Virginia, and I am still a huge fan of Senator Byrd. He has served longer in the Senate and cast more votes than any other senator in American history. What really touches me is that, two years ago, when his term was up, his wife had recently died, and he was approaching age 90. Yet, he ran for an unprecedented ninth term in the Senate because he wanted to serve West Virginians. God bless you, Senator Byrd! God bless you!
pdfuster 3 years ago
Um... You're going a little overboard.
Chill, and go with your liberal self.
And back to the original question, yes... enact term limits, as well as driver licenses!
Older people (over 80), especially on meds, should not drive....
...or be 4th in line for the Presidency.
Sorry, pal...
But if this video doesn't prove this... you're an idiot!... amazing! whew! wake up!

goggle "confessions of a white house sex slave"!
soulfortruth 3 years ago
I was slow to grow into adolescence. By the time I was thirteen years old, my breasts were tender and beginning to swell, which made me "too old" for VanderJagt's pedophile perversions. When my father brought me to Mackinac Island for routine prostitution at the Political Retreat, VanderJagt introduced me to a new friend he had made now that he was in Washington, D.C. as a U.S. Congressman—U.S. Senator Robert C. Byrd, Democrat from West Virginia.
soulfortruth 3 years ago
Byrd had been a US Senator as long as I have been alive, serving as Senate Whip and later as President Pro Tempore of the Senate & as the all powerful Senate Appropriations leader. Byrd commanded attention & respect from all who came in contact with him, particularly from my father. When we were left alone in his room, he loomed over me in a threatening stance. His cold, blue slitty eyes locked onto mine. I undressed and climbed into his bed as ordered.

And the Germans loved Hitler.
scientistwriter 3 years ago 4
That's a disgusting comparison and you should be ashamed of yourself. You have a very poor grasp on history, and it shows off in this ignorant comment. Many Germans supported Hitler out of fear, but you didn't say that. Byrd has been against this war from the beginning. He's one of the few Senators with good views on foreign policy.
The man has done more for this state than could ever hope to do in your lifetime.
tribefan011 3 years ago
As a former Klansman, as Senator Byrd is for those who are unaware, Hitler and the KKK share many similar beliefs.
UncleGeorgeW 3 years ago
Nice Reductio ad Hitlerum fallacy. Byrd has apologized many times. You know nothing about Byrd and you clearly know nothing about arguing as well. People change and Byrd is not an exception.
tribefan011 3 years ago
Well I think that there are certain things that can be looked past and there are things that cannot. I cannot look past his former leadership position in the KKK as he is an elected official that is near the top of the Presidential line of succession.
UncleGeorgeW 3 years ago
You have to realize that America in 1945 and America in 2008 are very different.
tribefan011 3 years ago
if he is genuinely ill then I feel evry sorry for him.

I suppose you right wing goons would have said he was a senile old coot too and kicked him out the door.

wikipedia: Robert Byrd was born on November 20, 1917 !
