  • If only Zam had ThunderPUNCH instead of Thunder Wave.... Then again, I suppose if that was the case, then he would have been in trouble several other times, huh?

  • “We can't look to the mysterious future.”

Time to hire a Gardevoir analyst, perhaps? :P

  • @TheKetsuban Oh yes. :3 Maybe a Xatu, since this is gen 2, though. I prefer the Gardevoir option, though X3

  • @leafbarrett There's always Pokémon Battle Revolution :3

  • All of the Announcer Chronicles are solo efforts, played, dubbed, and (where necessary) edited by myself.

This one just happens to be a different kind of solo effort as well, of course.

  • Hmm, speaking of Mirror Coat.

If you used while having up a Substitute, wouldn't you always fail to inflict damage?

(And we're assuming that the opponent is not using a dark type Pokemon.)

  • It took a while to arrange the test the way I needed it, but Counter or Mirror Coat from behind a substitute does not pay back any damage at all, even if it's the right type of attack, and even on the turn that breaks the substitute. That's why you generally don't pair those moves with each other on the same moveset.

Attacking a substitute with Mirror Coat, though, works just fine, getting in for the usual damage which is almost always enough to break it.

  • tbh, i think you're obviously a very good trainer, and i dont mean to come across as an online nerdy loser that likes to use the internet to complain, but im surprised you went with only alakazam with 1 actual attack mainly because of this thing known as a dark type

  • tbh, i think you're obviously a very good trainer, and i dont mean to come across as an online nerdy loser that likes to use the internet to complain, but im surprised you went with only alakazam with 1 actual attack mainly because of this thing as a dark type

  • why didn't you see the moves instead of crying about the thunder wave? ._.

  • It's a chance to give some personality to the announcer, separate from the battler. The Thunder Wave was deliberate even as I was recording the battle, and for the commentary (which was post-dubbed) I knew when it was coming up and used it as an opportunity to hit a spot.

  • I'm pretty sure that the blastoise from the second battle packs mirror coat, and I bet my ass that it used it the turn you got the crit. Luck is part of battles though.

  • you should have another attacking move

  • What, are there now 5 move slots available and no one told me?

  • @SadisticMystic no I ment replace a move with something like Ice Punch

  • If there was an expendable slot to write over, I would do that. The problem is, there isn't.

  • 31:04 It's not just a PP conversion strategy. It's a PP drainer strategy!

  • I have no idea. I'm sorry you failed with 1 vs. 24. It was because Stantler was too tough with Struggle.

  • Even Gardevoir could Paralize a foe(except for Dark)and the Calm Mind a few times and then Psychic or Thunderbolt to win a lot of battles.

  • But does it know why kids love Cinnamon Toast Crunch?

  • @SadisticMystic I think she DOES!

  • That...was freakin...epic. I did NOT see the win against Umbreon coming. Alakazam was always my favorite non-legendary for a reason. Well played, 'Zam, old friend. Well played...

  • Just out of interest, Mystic, what do you think would have happened in the battles after the dreaded umbreon? Easy or hard 4 your alakazam?

  • Battle 7 would be even harder than this. Tyranitar is an instant loss if it appears, and Snorlax's guaranteed appearance needs quite a few FP turns spaced consistently over a long period in order to outlast Return, which has more PP than Substitute and outraces Recover loops. With Snorlax down, any two of the other four would be fine for me.

Battle 8 is a cinch for Alakazam alone, but depending on the set of Pokemon, I might have to wait for Celebi to Struggle itself out of the last few damage.

  • Alakazam is Chuck norris without beard!

He can blow your mind just by thinking about doing so!

  • not often the commentator runs out of things to say like at 48:00 huh?

  • The trainer in this video did really good. Against that Umbreon I was on the edge of my seat.

  • ALAKAZAM IS A LEGENDARY POKEMON!!

  • who ever did this is ingenious. the strategy used is nearly impeccable.

  • User's defense is halved and opponent's attack is quartered... I haven't been able to find this explanation anywhere else.

Besides, doesn't that have the same effect as the user's defense doubling?

  • Not quite, with respect to remainders (which are lost) and the 10-bit cap used by the GB games (in case something with defense higher than 511 attempts to use it).

  • how does he have so much pp?

  • I just did something similar about a month ago in Heartgold. I called it 1 vs 132. I challenged all 16 Gym Leaders, the Elite Five (counting Lance as the fifth of course), and Red all with a single pokemon. I managed to complete the challenge with a Rayquaza thanks to a small detail in the rules taken advantage of in the Red fight. The Self-KO clause states that if a pokemon would KO itself with recoil damage upon KOing the last pokemon the attacking pokemon wins. Life Orb was used. Overall fun.

  • Lol Pokemon colosseum has 1 vs 300!

I did it Kyogre was well hard but epic Groundon vs Kyogre!

  • dude that substitute is staring into my soul!!!

  • I didn't know there were videos this long.

  • @Johnny2071 Any member that was still around before the 10 minute limit was implemented, or anyone with special accounts, can make videos as long as they want.

  • @Johnny2071 you have to be a partner to have them.

or just have really old video,s there used to not be a cap.

  • Great Battles!

  • This reminds me of 1 vs. 100.

  • That's...kind of the point.

  • like how you call "It's 1 vs. [number]!"

  • If Alakazam had a Mysteryberry instead of a Miracleberry, you'd be laughing :)

  • And, each set must have at least 4 johto pokemon, OK? Thanks.

  • And you want a trillion dollars and a pony too?

  • Great Answer LOL XD

  • Oh and, try to beat the cups and gym leaders with weak pokemon, and a marathon with normal, non legendary pokemon, OK? Thanks

  • I got a challenge for you, do a marathon of all the cups and the kanto gym leaders.

  • You know, now that I think about it, maybe Thunderpunch was better than Thunderwave. Still had the ability to paralize, and would have helped against Umbreon. Or maybe Ice Punch with it's freeze chance, and ability to hit Eggsegutor... nope, TPunch is better.

  • if that stupid scientist didn't bring misdreavus, how far do you think you could've gone?

One alakazam is downright world record material.

  • I mean umbreon.

  • Snorlax in the next battle would have been tough to crack, requiring better-than-average paralyze luck sustained over a very long time, and not allowing any criticals when I don't have Substitute. Tyranitar is even worse, but at least it's rarely in the lineup.

Of course, it's all a pointless hypothetical. Umbreon is ALWAYS in the lineup in battle 6, and there's nothing you can do to change that. Likewise for Snorlax in 7.

Battle 8 would be a pushover for Alakazam, if only I could get there.

  • I wonder what other Pokemon could do that.. any thoughts, SM?

  • that was so cool, i never would of come up with some of those strategies!

  • ...And this is why Struggle was changed in the 4th Generation.

I've greatly enjoyed these matches, though.

  • it was good i mean i thought it was over when umberion came out i would have never thought of a stratigy like tha and even if i did i would be way to lazy to accually do it lol =)

  • You sound like Marriland.

  • Daaww, I dunno why but you're voice sounds rather cute. X3

  • That Dragonite is annoying with Extreme speed, the AI always tries to go first. I jsut wondered why you used Thunder Wave and not Seismic Toss?

  • Seismic Toss is game against Umbreon, and...really nothing else. On the other hand, losing Thunder Wave takes away solid game against Pokemon where I could otherwise keep using Recover to parity with the incoming blows, simply waiting for a turn of full paralysis before I fire away from a safe position. Remember the battle with Feraligatr? Sure, try getting through that one with Seismic Toss.

Alakazam is usually not the beatdown, and I'd rather have a move that actually helps fulfill its role.

  • 44:00 I read a Garfield comic like that once... the TV said "And now a word from our sponsers", second panel said "Sasquach", and third said "Welcome back!" while Garfield slaps his head.

  • These battles are genius :D I wish I could think of strategies like that!

  • 3 Questions.

    1) Why didn't you save an additional Psychic, in the case that you beat Umbreon quicker and the final Pokemon happened to be Crobat?

    2) Do you do the announcing as you play, or do you record the match(es) and the do commentary?

    3) Despite this is GSC, what is your opinion on that new RBY battling guide?

  • 1) I did hold off the 16th Psychic as long as I could, finally wasting it at turn 95 (with Recover as the 96th move to go into Struggle v. Struggle with full health). The plan was to save an attack if possible, but Umbreon stood up too long against the stock of PP.

I did burn 15 Psychics before the first Thunder Wave to give it fewer FP turns; letting it paralyze Alakazam with Body Slam has potential but in my testing, that always led to a few turns of bad luck in a row that let it get the KO.

  • 2) I record the video first, then post-dub the commentary after I know what my spots are going to be and how I'm going to fill the time between them.

    3) Haven't read it, and didn't even know there was a new one.

  • This commentary is priceless!

  • What, were you expecting to have to pay money for this?

(Because if you, or anyone else out there, did expect to have to pay money, I'll certainly accept your money...)

  • That was amazing, even though Umbreon and Stantler ended up undoing Alakazam's winning streak. Now, is that a rental Alakazam with new powers or did you upload it from a Pokemon Gameboy Game

  • Hint: If it were a rental, it would have come with garbage moves.

  • Fair enough (though I make the most of using rentals in Pokemon Stadium 2; I wish I did have a Transfer Pak with a Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow/Gold/Silver/Crystal version in it, but I don't and I don't know if they sell them anymore)

  • That Alakazam reminds me of my 4th gen Gardevoir. She survived everything that she shouldn't, and if she got a turn to start setting up Calm Mind, it was over then and there.

  • If you look closely, that Steelix is called Lixette, but it's MALE...

  • Welcome to each trainer's personal naming scheme. See also the "no gay marriage in Pokemon" comment.

  • Yeah, those coms have a weird way of looking at life.

    Dictionary: -ette (suffix)

    1. small (no)

    2. female (hell no)

    3. imitation (say what?)

  • Your Attract or Captivate failed? I'm sorry, but gay, homo, or lesbian is unheard of in children's games.

Personally, I do name my Pokemon. I name male Alakazam BRAINSTORM and females STEPHANIE (after a friend).

  • dont diss sadistic... he wrote the best pokemon crystal strategy faq EVER

you rock mate! you should start some GSC tourneys on netbattle or something, anything past GSC is crap

  • think you would have beaten it all if it weren't for that umbreon

  • What exactly does Lugia get from having Sacred Fire? If you're going to put on blatantly out-of-place moves, that one seems like a waste.

  • Your Alakazam is amazing. It could outrun Aerodactyl, stand up to physical attacks, and more...

  • Geez, were you looking at a guide when doing this challenge?

Hmm, have you considered doing a moveset consisting of Psychic, Thunderpunch, Fire Punch, and Ice Punch. Pre-Generation IV, of course.

  • No, I was looking at the screen. And I guess sometimes at the timer on the DVD recorder.

Triple punches don't do a whole lot of good; there are only a few Pokemon that have those punches hit for significantly more damage than Psychic, and certainly not enough to merit giving up any semblance of defense. Recover is some good, last I checked.

  • Well, it seems...strange. You knew exactly how to counter everyone, such as wasting Exeggutor's Synthesis. Did you...memorize everyone's movesets and strategy? I commerate you on taking the time.

And, yes, I like heal moves. What would you consider for a Generation IV set?

I cannot believe you cleared the Umbreon, and I didn't even see it yet!

I can't even get past Bird Keeper with a whole (rental) team of three.

And where, oh where, do I find a MiracleBerry in Generation II???

  • I knew I wanted to do something involving Stadium 2 Prime, so while running through it several times for ideas, it's only natural that I picked up on everyone's gameplan. The AI in general is quite predictable, too.

No idea what to put on an Alakazam in 4. I never got into 4, and barely had anything to do with 3.

Miracleberry can be had by Mystery Gift, (possibly duplicated) trade, or by just setting your item list directly if you have the ability to do that.

  • Oh... I don't really like Generation II below...too slow graphics.

  • How'd you hack to make your video last an hour?

  • Easy...I just pressed the record button, then pressed the stop button an hour and 25 minutes later, then cropped out most of the dull Alakazam/Umbreon fight to get to the current length.

  • Um, I still don't get it...didn't do any videos yet.

  • He has a Director account, so he can upload unlimited length vids.

  • director wha?

  • If you had an account before Google bought YouTube, you could ask to get a director account, which allowed you to upload videos without a time restriction or size restriction.

  • Without time restrictions only. There was still the size restriction, though they made it a bit more lenient by the time I got around to making this 147MB video.

  • WOW i like you vids (pokemon) sub

  • Hi man Nice Job!

    This Game is for PS2?

  • What ever gave you an idea like that?

  • haha no dxD

    its for nintendo 64

  • I'm looking at the description and time frame and I'm thinking "there's no way this dude's gonna own with 1 measly pokemon", but I'm watching anyway XD

  • I like how you act when Umbreon comes out. You said *psshwo* UMBREON! I liked that and will never forget it.

  • hey, guy

how did you get maximo status for alakazam ?

  • Alakazam's the best pokemon in the game for those that don't know why he picked Alakazam.

  • Not quite. There's always Mewtwo at least, who can do just about anything Alakazam can here, as good or better...EXCEPT take enough damage from Umbreon's attacks that it nearly kills itself on recoil.

  • sorry for spamming your comments with videos this morning (i subscribed to your videos btw, hehe), but I have a question regarding pokemon stadium 2. does it have a dodrio gameboy feature similar to the first? i'm considering heading to gamestop to buy it, but without the faster speed getting maxed stat exp would be too much of a pain

  • It does, though GSC Dodrio is only good for 3x (instead of the 4x of RBY), and it scales the game down to monochrome.

  • oh thats pretty awesome. i guess ill get it then, thanks

  • you had a MEW? and at level 100? you could've used that

  • Sure I could. It'd also do worse than Alakazam.

  • o lol i didnt see, but that takes forever just struggling. If u versed a houndoom with crunch u would be screwed, umbreon is just more defensive but has horrible attacks

  • u really have a lot of skill, but ur alacazam cant beat a dark type

  • Can't it? It just did, as you'd see if you watched through to the end! (Granted it was left in no condition to deal with the weakling that followed, but another reason to actually watch.

  • Alakazam can beat Dark types, with the punches. Or, in DP, focus blast.

  • Or by getting the opponent to take itself down with Struggle damage, while still being able to have moves that let you survive against all those previous opponents.

  • That's also the hardest way. :P

  • Not if you assume the precondition that you have to make it through 5 battles with the set!

  • Never assume.. *shifty eyes*

  • What, is there some way of starting immediately on battle 6 that's gone undiscovered all these years?

    I thought not.

  • 59 minutes!

  • If Garchomp was in stadium 2, he could complete this challenge rather easily. Using the typical swords dance/outrage/fire fang/earthquake moveset, and yache berry for it's held item.

  • ...except that in Stadium 2, Outrage and Fire Fang wouldn't exactly have enough "oomph" to make up for the all-offense playstyle (not to mention Swords Dance wouldn't boost them here), among other things...

  • Man, you used Alakazam really well, there. I think everyone who's looking into competitive battling should watch this video. (Although the metagame has changed, so I don't know how that would affect your strategy.)

  • The 6-Pokemon metagame is completely different from a solo strategy, so of course those are going to turn out differently.

  • Shut up.

  • Talk about bizarre time paradoxes. Seeing as how he is age 23, it is logically impossible to have something happen to someone "before they're 10" at an age well past that one.

  • Hah, I was wondering what would happen if you ran into a Dark-type. I'm quite impressed you managed to take it down through sheer absurd persistence. Well done.

  • SFLaVang, 2 things. first douchebags cannot talk. Second, insulting people for making sweet videos? sad...

  • Alakazam may not have made it all the way through, but if you ask me, going as far as it did was impressive enough. Great video, 5/5.

  • lol, "no gay marraige in pokemon"

  • Maybe a fast hypno might do a little better...but even with the same moveset it just wouldn't cut it. Perhaps an espeon because of its lower defense might make the struggle shorter. If it can also learn thunder wave, we have a winner.

  • Eevee obviously can't get Thunder Wave, just as obviously you can't move Espeon to RBY, and Thunder Wave isn't an RBY TM. It does have the intriguing possibility of Zap Cannon, but consider that Morning Sun only has 25% of the PP of Recover (and that the Rain Dance trainer is able to successfully nerf that move) and we have a loser.

  • Though, if this were possible with generation 3 or 4 pokemon, along with all the new overpowered moves and recovery moves, this would be possible. Closest we have to that is colloseum, but that is still highly unlikely.

  • Hey, SM, actually, Thunder Wave IS in RBY as TM45. Of course, it doesn't disprove anything you said, but I thought maybe I'd point that out.

  • ...funny voice

  • lol, no gay marriage in Pokémon at 04:50

  • 声が邪魔 黙れ

  • i like your announcing skills u cld get a job in the next pkmn game ^_~

  • lmao no gay marraige in pokemon. AshXBrock lol

  • cool

  • how r u gettin tha long upload times? ie: 59:02 in this video.

  • You were lucky at 37'50 %D

  • I recently try luck with "gambler tauros" with horn drill, fissure, rest and sleep talk (item: mysteryberry) and i reached the scientist, whose MAYOR luck made to hit myself more or less 12 times. Lucky? isn't it ¬¬

  • I successfully cleared a 1 v. 24 in PS1 Prime Cup Poké Ball, where Lv 100 was Dewgong. Also I used the same 1 v. 24 team against a rental team consisting of Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres, Charizard, Blastoise, and Venusaur. I managed total victory there too. The Dewgong's moves: Payday, Surf, Ice Beam, Strength. Only latter three were needed. Payday is used in-game for money as there's no Amulet Coin in gen1. (The other five Pokémon on 1 v. 24 are Aerodactyl, Hitmonchan, Mankey, Nidoran♂, Nidoran♀.)

  • Prime Cup Poke Ball can be beaten with level 50s, and we all know how much rentals suck (particularly as you head up the power scale according to conventional wisdom, the stats and moves get hosed more and more).

  • Prime cup pokeball is so easy.... Virtually any ou pokemon back then can sweep it.

  • A question: Can you play pokemon crystal in pokemon stadium 2?

  • yea

  • do more than 50% this is just useless,it was of course pokecup RD 2 master ball

  • I teach alakazam Double team, if the opponent can't take down over 50% of total HP i'm in a big advantage. I start with double team and recover until the opponent miss, then i do the 2nd Double team, and keep dping the same until i get all 6 double team. I'm not sure if it's the best moveset but it worked really well in the final of round 2 poke cup. Of course if they

  • Certainly the best moveset against an annoyer as the CPU is the one you used. Substitute acts like a pseudo-safeguard, protects from leech seed and mind reader, which is very useful against an annoyer as the CPU. Recover for keep using subsitute, and psychic for HARD ass kicking.

But... why using thunder wave in alakazam? Was just to get the advantage of "It's freeze by paralyzis"?

  • Thunder Wave's FP turns are useful in breaking Recover loops in my favor.

  • y is steelix floating?

  • Because designing fluid animations for it would have been too hard any other way.

  • should try the past meets the present format in poke cup master ball round 2 either that or the prime cup.

  • are you playing in an emulator?

  • LOL youre funny and this is a great video

    You make awesome vids!

    5 star!!!!!!!!

  • Can I have a download link to this and your prime cup with pokecup team please?

  • Is this through emulation? If so how'd you get your pokemon game to work with the emulator?

  • No, it's not.

  • Oh alright thanks.I'm really impressed with your Alakazam and your other pokemon.Their much better than the pokemon I had back in the day.

  • Perhaps a better pokemon would've been mewtwo, with psychic, submission, thunderbolt, and recover... he would own the prime cup easily.

  • Submission is prone to miss, and you have no way of bouncing back from status afflictions. This is particularly crippling with something like Toxic.

  • Perhaps you should've taught Alakazam Counter. Since it knows Recover, kills from Shadow Ball and Hyper Beam (and because Alakazam's Achilles' Heel is Defense) can be safely recovered. You have to somewhat count on luck that attacks will not be Critical, but trust me, Countering a full-fledged Hyper Beam is an instant one-hit kill :)

  • What move would I drop to make room for Counter? Either I'd be a complete duck to anything simply by not using physicals, or I'd have to cut the outlast package that lets Alakazam come back from strong physicals to begin with. 4 moves is 4 moves.

Remember that Counter goes last, so Alakazam has to take 2 hits in a row, no Recover between. If the second of those is HB, how often do I really survive? Furthermore, what HB users are there that I don't dispose of handily using what I already have?

  • Oh i see. I was actually thinking of disposing Thunder Wave. Sure you can get lucky with a few turns the opponent drops, but I was actually thinking since Alakazam is faster than most opponents, I actually thought Thunder Wave was there for a gimmick.

Besides, if Alakazam knew Counter, Dragonite and Umbreon, especially Umbreon, would be a whole lot easier. I taught one of my pokemon the following moves to counter against Ghost and Dark type moves:

    Psychic

    Softboiled

    Counter

    Egg Bomb

  • The Recover plans against many opponents depend on just keeping up Recover until they drop a turn. Without Thunder Wave, that isn't possible, and the opponents that fall because of Thunder Wave vastly outnumber those that fall because of Counter (especially when excluding those that I'm in no danger against by just wearing them down with something other than Counter).

  • But can't the same strategy work on a Pokemon with a high attack power, and also able to learn Recover? I mean, teaching a pokemon Body Slam to get them paralyzed has always worked for me (since its a one in three chance of causing paralysis). So yeah, teaching a pokemon Body Slam, Counter, SUbstitute and Recover could actually finish the "1 vs. 24" challenge right? But I wonder if a Pokemon with a high ATK can learn Recover...

  • That's nice to think about, but...what Pokemon can do such a thing? The only Normal that gets Recover is Porygon/Porygon2, who can't physically attack worth a damn, and to top it all off can't even get Counter. Miltank can imitate Recover albeit with half the PP, but can't get Counter either. Anything that isn't Normal won't hit anywhere near hard enough and isn't worth considering. Recover is just too much associated with special-type Pokemon that no physicals get it alongside much else good.

  • I was thinking you could use Mewtwo. Although its an uber-legendary, it can learn Counter, Body Slam, Substitute (almost any pokemon can use Substitute). It has a decent Attack, and teaching it COunter can mess up that Tyranitar that knows Crunch (grr...stupid Crunch).

  • This is generation 2, not 4. Crunch can't be Countered, only Mirror Coated, except...oh, how convenient, Tyranitar is type-immune to Mirror Coat. I don't think that one's going down well.

  • Wait, Dark-type moves are Special Attacks? Well thats convenient. But if you faced off against that Tyranitar using Alakazam, would you have won with the struggle strategy that you used against Umbreon?

  • The skier rarely uses tyranitar, I have used alakazam aganist her, and she never used tyranitar. The problem with the semi-finals is that snorlax.
