Thanks for all your Hedges covers. My greatest brush with fame was giving him and Liz Story a ride to their hotel on a road trip to see him play at Vanderbilt in Nashville, Tn. The guy was and is a legend.
Hey dude can you explain a bit what you're doing at :35? I keep trying that finger drag style but it just doesn't sound right (after the higher notes, that little bass bit in between those)
this video helped me figure out so much of this song so far :D thanks a bunch dude.
@Cavin8r I think you're talking about the pull-off on the third fret which I do with the 3-5 fingers (on the 4-6 strings). I don't believe Michael does this in the studio version of the song, but it's a technique he used often, and I felt it sounded good in the context here.
but try to change dynamics much more! listen carefully to what michael is doing, he changes dynamics all the time and makes a lot of strong accents which makes the song interesting.
And try to figure the real rhythm of the intro/outro out. i know, its very complicated but its worth the effort.
@Intencities1 I hear what you're saying. My internal clock doesn't seem to work like Michael's did, which isn't surprising, as I notice this when I play a lot of his tunes. There are hiccups - for lack of a better word. I can play along to the studio track however - it's just not as comfortable. I'll probably redo this in HD. Thanks for your thoughtful comments.
You really rock man. I cant get over your hedges cover accuracy. You give me hope when I tune my strings away from standard! haha seriously though. well done
haha and Love your guitar! i don't even have a electric acoustic lol, I have a seagull ceder wood acoustic, makes it kinda hard for me to play this song with a none electric, especially since I play the kaki King version:)
Very nice, i've favorited. I've been a subscriber for some time. This is really, really good. If I hadn't ever heard Hedges music I would've guessed this to be your own. Your seem very confident and controlled. I dig that slight touch of flange in there too, I don't think Hedges did that.
That is a fantastic cover. I did pick up on the lack of 'aggression' compared to MH. I've watched almost every bit of MH footage on youtube, and I notice you carry the guitar higher and you seem to hold it more stationary. Hedges moved around a lot more, his body looser and I think that gave him his 'power'. Your stroke is only from the elbow, his was broader and sharper. I think you play beautifully in a very difficult style, even if your style is a tad smoother.
Awesome! Sounds beautiful. This is my favorite song from my favorite artist. If only he were still alive to make more beautiful and mind blowing music. I wish I could play this song!
wow, you know, you have a great passsion for music like ive never known, and the way you literally throw your hands up and down that fret board is awesome, you are jimmy hendrix on accoustic, and i love everything you do, you have a talent, that i find totally amazing.
I should throw up a video of some "passionate" out-takes. Watch the monkey have temper tantrums as things go horribly wrong during the recording process. I need beta-blockers or something...
I like your variations on the song. Your songs are cool, they have their own sound, if that makes sense. For example, if I hear one of your songs, and you play a different one, I can figure that you played it.
This is an interesting comment because when I listen to myself play all I can hear is that I'm not as aggressive as Hedges not am I as funky as Don Ross. Sort of "lazy" in my attack. Maybe that's my sound? Lazy acoustic? Ha ha!
Hey man. Great version. Stuck up a rough version I created last night if you wanna see. Only learned it recently so ironing out the creases as they say.
hey man. do you've any idea how'd I'd use my condenser mic and sync it with a camera. for that video it was a test with my new laptop web cam. don't have a pickup in my guitar yet but have a good condenser and recording setup (though it's connected to my pc). guess I could use some video editing software but that means I'd have to get serious lol.
hey man! i'm really diggin your playing. your vids have opened my mind to a whole lot of musicians I never knew about. keep doing what you're doing. *subscribed!
ps. any chance you'll make a video lesson on how to play Angelina by Tommy Emmanuelle? I'm having slight problems figuring the song out.
You totally channeled MH in this one. Dead on on the 12th fret harmonics, left hand strum-offs, slaps, and melody. Nice work, Warren. Nice wood floors, too!! :)
Another excellent MH cover. Dude you have some nice chops! I guess you really need to be standing up to play this one! :-) What kind of amp are you using? Thanks for the post. -Derek
Hey Warren, nice cover again. You really got those harmonics ringing. How did you solve the sync problem. I have been having it also and I have tried formatting to flv, mov, wmv,and mp4 and I am still having problems. They play fine on my computer but when I upload they are out of sync. I don't have a digital video camera, all I have is a microsoft Lifecam webcam. It has worked fine until March. I think youtube has changed something which makes it incompatible now. Any suggestions?
Isn't that something when you hear the full mp3-encoded sound? I don't know how long it'll be before YT ups the bitrate so it'll be the default setting.

This is by far the best cover of Michael Hedges' Ritual Dance on YouTube. Please can you post a tutorial of this? I'm in trouble learning it.

does putting a pick guard on your guitar really ruin the tone of the guitar?

Not that I can tell. FYI, there is a pickguard on that guitar, it's just clear.

Stick a pickup in the Seagull, and you too can have an electric acoustic! Have fun!

apart from Sungha Jung you have the best cover!
ba59102 1 year ago
Sungha plays a version closer to Kaki King's, which I'm not particularly fond of. Impressive player nonetheless.

If you're on a PC you should be able to import the mic captured audio track into Movie Maker and re-dub it.
